I’m declaring April the Month of Mobile for web3 gaming! As always, the space is changing rapidly. And while AI is the current hot buzzword, mobile is the major impetus behind much of the current development. Mobile games also could be the gateway for a flood of new players to get involved with the blockchain space.

I expect to see a number of new mobile, web3-enabled games launched over the coming months. And if they have any sort of success at all, they will attract a growing crowd of developers to the scene. We have mints, alphas, and pre-registrations from mobile focused games such as Hunters On-Chain, Blast Royale, WAGMI Defense and Rogue Nation. Meanwhile, Gods Unchained is still smoothing out the rough edges of their mobile app and Gala Games works on bringing their newly acquired suite of mobile games into the blockchain space!

Now of course, not all games will be playable on mobile devices. But casual gaming is a huge market. One that many web3 developers are eager to acquire!

Hunters On-Chain

Despite only being available on a testnet, Hunters on-Chain has continued to hold onto a spot in the top 10 most played games for the past three weeks! With their T1 Genesis Hunter Chest sale complete, look for Hunters to push for a release soon. They also recently announced that they plan on releasing mobile versions first. Rumors have it that downloads are already available for early testers!

Hunters On-Chain is free to play. If you want to get started by playing on the testnet, you can just ask on their Discord and they will provide you with a common Hunter to use. This Hunter will also transfer over to mainnet once the game launches.

Mocaverse

Mocaverse held their first PFP mint and also implemented an experience system for their new NFTs in March. Part of Animoca Brands, expect Mocaverse to continue to find ways to bring value to their Moca NFTs. It’s rare to see a PFP collection provide utility for their NFTs so quickly out of the box. But this show of speed bodes well for the future of this collection. And since Animoca seems to have their hands in half of the web3 gaming space, this feels like a space to keep an eye on.

Voxie Tactics

The Dragonfest event kicks off in April bringing a new PvE challenge, a new Drako class, and plenty more. Voxie Tactics has also introduced and released a number of updates for their crafting / forging system. The strategy genre is very under-served in web3 gaming. Voxie Tactics already has a solid foothold. If they can continue to build on their game with additional activities, events, and UI improvements, this free to play, play and earn, fantasy-based tactical game should be around for quite some time!

Splinterlands

Recent adjustments in Splinterlands to counter bots has resulted in a significant decrease in active players for this trading card game. Now presumably, most of those were bots, so we’re not seeing a major outflux of real-life players. But the imminent release of the first phases of land gameplay (surveying should open in early April), will be a good litmus test to see how many active landowners are around.

Echoes of Empire

Echoes of Empire announced their plans to release a beta in October of 2023, and also run a playtest in April. The strategy gaming market is surprisingly thin in web3 gaming. So there is still plenty of opportunity to claim a lead role.

This Echoes of Empires playtest runs from April 19th to April 24th. This round will only be open to those holding Celestial Claim NFTs. Unfortunately, I don’t own on, so I’ll have to just get my info about the game secondhand. But I do look forward to seeing what they have to show!

Though they still are just running on a testnet, Hunters On-Chain has already developed quite a bit of buzz and a seemingly strong playerbase. At at the end of this month, interested players have a final chance to mint their own T1 Genesis Hunter — playable character NFTs that come with a very nice bonus item!

These Genesis Hunters are Tier 1. That means that they all come equipped with a level 4, Legendary artifact that provides 100% bonus BGEM earnings from every match! This is very handy for getting a quick start on finding shards and leveling up Hunters!

Any following Tiers of Genesis Hunters will have decreasing levels of this artifact. In total, there will only ever be 3,333 of the T1 Genesis Hunters, 5,555 of Tier 2, and 7,777 of Tier 3.

Genesis Hunter T1 Chest Mint

Following what seems to be a fairly standard pattern these days, this mint will occur in several phase.

The first phase is a special pre-sale for Genesis Hunter holders who filled out a form. If you address is not on this list, you are not allowed to join the pre-sale. The pre-sale consists of 400 chests, already allotted to specific wallets, with a waiting list in case anyone doesn’t make their purchases. The price of Genesis Hunter Chests during the pre-sale is 100 MATIC each. Unfortunately, this is a manual process. So buyers need to send their MATIC payments to boomland.wallet // 0x5b5cB86E3BD5E49536dE0e3B6E0EFc28F42a9DAB by March 29th, 0:00 CET. Check their Discord for full details.

Another snapshot of Genesis Hunter and Chest holders will be taken on March 28th. This allows access to phase 1 of the main sale. Phase 1 includes 500 Chests, priced at 115 MATIC apiece. Stage 2 is the whitelist sale for those who earned spots through various giveaways, events, and collaborations. And there are still chances to get on the phase 2 whitelist! Keep an eye on the Hunters Twitter and Discord channel for opportunities.

The main sale will be hosted by Magic Eden on March 31st, starting at 3pm UTC. Stage 2 opens at 3:35pm UTC, with a public mint for any unsold Chests a half-hour after that. Stage 2 and public mints cost 130 MATIC.

The current floor price for Hunters sits right at 100 MATIC.

Hunters Gameplay

Hunters is a multiplayer, PvE contest. Each match features four players fighting monsters and leveling up. In the basic, Hunt game mode, matches last for two minutes, with the top spot going to whoever has earned the most experience in that time, or whoever is the last survivor — whichever comes first. Each player starts the match at level 1 with full hit points. As they kill monsters and grab the stars that drop, players gain experience. Gain enough experience, and you level up, earning the right to choose between two, semi-random promotions. These promotions include standard power-ups such as increased damage, greater attack range, and more hit points, as well as special abilities like Damage Reflect and Demon Pact (sacrifice HP for more damage).

As the match goes on, the monsters spawned get tougher. So just trying to hide and survive the match isn’t really a viable tactic. Players need to actively get out on the battlefield and increase their levels. Monsters spawn in the corners of the map, though they will chase players all around. At the center lies a healing square that can be visited at any time.

The other game mode currently available is Boss Hunt. The basics for this mode are the same, though players earn double experience. That’s because the ultimate goal of the match is to do as much damage as possible to the Boss Dragon who lives on the top side of the map. Players can go over and fight the Dragon at any point, but it’s better to level up a bit first. Boss Hunts last for three and a half minutes, with ranking based on the amount of damage dealt to the Boss.

Players earn BGEM tokens from playing matches, which can be used to purchase chests containing random artifacts and hunter shards. BGEM is also used for leveling up Hunters.

Time is short unfortunately. Less than 24 hours left in the Hunters On-Chain launch tournament! If you just want to jump right into it, you can play the game in your web browser at https://hoc.boomland.io/tournament. Fortunately, the prize pool is deep, with rewards for the top 10k players. It took maybe 20-30 minutes of playtime for me to crack the top 5k, so you’re not too late!

The tournament is free to play and enter. Players are given a large stash of coins and Hunter shards so they can try out and level up various Hunters. And there are a lot to choose from. Over 30, each with their own stats, attacks, and special abilities. Each one has an energy level that limits how often they can be used in matches, so you’ll need to play with several different Hunters to compete.

Players can earn a Common Hunter NFT, as well as a stack of BGEM tokens from participating in this tournament. These Hunters won’t have all of the bonuses as a Genesis Hunter, but it’s still a nice freebie for those new to the game.

The tournament ends at some unspecified time within the next 24 hours (by March 15th, 11am CST at the latest).

What is Hunters On-Chain?

Hunters is a browser-based, competitive PvE game (with a PvP mode in the works) built on the Polygon blockchain. A casual, action-based, fantasy adventure, Hunters On-Chain includes NFTs for Hunters and Artifacts, and two tokens, BGEM, and BOOM. BGEM is the in-game currency. And through it exists as a blockchain token, Boomland has no plans to list it on any exchanges or provide liquidity for the BGEM token. BOOM will be the governance token for the larger game ecosystem.

In Hunters, players can level up their Hunter NFTs with Shards, and permanently equip Artifacts which provide passive bonuses. Players earn BGEM tokens and ranking points by playing matches, with higher placements earning more rewards.

Hunters is made by a company called Boomland that plans to release a series of game with inter-operable assets, meaning that you can use the same NFTs in multiple games! This is an NFT feature that we really haven’t seen used very much, and I look forward to seeing how Boomland incorporates this into their games!

Hunters recently held a free mint for the first of their Genesis series of chests. Each Genesis chest holds one Hunter NFT and one Legendary artifact/ There will be a sale of additional Genesis chests sometime after the game launch.

Polygon Studios, a company that helps developers build blockchain apps on Polygon by providing them development, onboarding support, investment, and technology has partnered with BoomLand for the deployment of its ecosystem via Polygon’s Supernet infrastructure. The supernet infrastructure will help in removing gas fees, reduce latency and provide a fast blockchain ecosystem. The supernet will have highly customizable subchains that will allow developers to deploy apps without having to build their infrastructure.
