While some games are closing down, others are just getting started. Grit, the western-themed, battle royale, FPS from Gala Games goes live, giving players a chance to shoot and earn across a wild west town and the surrounding landscape!

Grit is free to play and available on Epic Games. Players will need a linked Gala Games account to download and play..

Grit features NFTs in the form of Gunslingers. Gunslingers are a set of 10,000 unique, generative characters to use in the game. Apparently using a Gunslinger NFT in-game will provide reward bonuses. But we’re still waiting for some sort of litepaper or official documentation from Grit. Gunslingers are available on secondary markets or on the Gala Games store.

Grit won’t have their own token, instead they will use GALA token for their game rewards. And their reward system will be familiar to many. Players earn Victory Points for completing quests and placing in the top three in matches. At the end of every day, players receive tokens based on the size of the reward pool and their percentage of overall Victory Points earned that day.

Note: GALA rewards are currently paused while the team works on their reward structure.

Players can also purchase a Battle Pass to earn other in-game rewards such as various usable and cosmetic items. And presumably we’ll also see leaderboards and tournaments in the near future as well.

Epic Games

Grit is the first launch of a web3 game on the Epic Games Store. Epic Games is a Steam-like, game distribution service with over 190 million users! This is a big step forward for the integration of the web2 and the web3 worlds. We’ll see if Grit can take advantage of their exposure to this large playerbase.

This could turn into a big win for Epic Games as well, since Steam has shown some disdain for blockchain gaming, opening up opportunities for other game platforms to take over the web3 space.

Gala Games

This is also a major step for Gala Games as it expands their portfolio of released games, and provides another integration for their GALA token, which was just recently relaunched to upgrade the smart contract.

We already covered the play and earn opportunities for Spider Tanks this month. So let’s take a look at some of the other offerings from Gala Games in May!

May Mayhem

Town Star relaunches their game on a new game engine called Godot. They will also be adding new content and holding weekly competitions throughout the month. Players can earn rewards by playing in May, with larger rewards for those who place at the top of the competitions.

Champions Arena has an ongoing playtest that extends into May. They have also said to expect the first ever Champions Arena NFT sale sometime this month.

GRIT, an FPS with a western theme plans to open up on a 24/7 basis for everyone with a Gala Games account. This is a huge leap forward for a game that until now, has only been open for a couple of hours a week.

Echoes of Empire just closed their five day playtest, but the team has hinted that there will be some ‘extra special excitement’ in May for EoE. Hopefully it will be a new playtest or beta announcement rather than another sale!

Mirandus will bring us another playtest in May with more goblin killing, and a huge bounty for whoever gets the first kill on their new Boss creature.

Superior should open up as free to play for everyone in May. And Legends Reborn which is already in an open playtest, promises to bring special competitions for venue owners in the coming weeks.

Gala Games also mentions two mobile games that should connect to the web3 world soon – Meow Match and Dragon Strike. These both came from their acquisition of the mobile developer Ember Entertainment earlier this year.

What is Gala Games?

Gala Games is a rapidly growing web3 ecosystem. In addition to their stable of web3 games, Gala Games has expanded into mobile gaming as well. They have also launched projects for distributing Music and Film as NFTs!

We’ve already talked about the upcoming Winter Demo playtest for The Walking Dead: Empires, so we won’t discuss that in any more detail here. And that’s because there are plenty of other playtests coming up soon as well!

Eternal Paradox

The Eternal Paradox playtest started earlier this week, on March 14th. It runs for two weeks total and is open to everyone with a Gala Games account. Unfortunately, this playtest is mobile only, but they do have builds available for both Android and iPhone users.

As a bonus, Eternal Paradox plans to reward the players in four different challenges. To participate, players will need to link their Gala Wallet in-game. Then, sometime after the playtest ends, the top three players in Combat Power, Challenge Mode, Destroy the Shakraam Legions, and Outlaw Hunting will earn Gems, the game currency. First place in each category earns $500 worth of Gems, second place $400, and third place $300.

Legends Reborn

The Legends Reborn playtest kicks off today (March 16th), at 11am PST. (UPDATE: Playtest is delayed. Keep a watch on their Discord announcements channel for new status reports.) We haven’t been given an end date, but their previous tests have run for two weeks, so we can probably expect the same here.

Legends Reborn is a TCG-style game, but with limited creatures. Each creature played to the board adds effect and spell cards to the player’s deck which they can then use on subsequent turns.

Legends Reborn is building two games really, one standard, non-web3 version that releases on Steam, and a web3 game that we expect to see with NFTs and the ability for players to monetize their playtime.

Last Expedition

Last Expedition launches into early access as they distribute Node Licenses to everyone who owns a Node Bundle on Monday, March 20th. Bundle owners will also receive a early access code Steam code that allows them to try out the latest dev build.

Last Expedition is a team based extraction game where each team races to be the first to extract three fragments while fighting hostile monsters as well as other players. Last Expedition relies on Node Operators running and hosting games, so it makes sense to let them get a first look at the game and try out the hosting features. Check out their recent YouTube video to see some of the gameplay.

Grit

Grit is a battle-royale style, western-themed FPS. You’ll need a key to try out their playtest, but all you have to do is sign up on https://grit.game/.

Grit holds regular playtests every Thursday, with varying time slots to try and accommodate players from around the world. Like most Gala Games, the best place to get the latest info is on their Discord server.

Gala Games

The Gala Games ecosystem is heating up. In addition to their growing stable of playable games, they are expanding into mobile, and have even launched side projects for distributing Music and Film as NFTs! Expect the announcements and new releases from Gala to keep coming!

Steam banned NFT games from its platform in October of 2021 with some very negative and obviously ill-informed comments from Gabe Newell about NFTs and the blockchain space. But really we know the main reason is that Steam makes a ton of money from item sales on its platform and doesn’t want to share that income. Epic Games, on the other hand, recognized the growing blockchain gaming industry and decided to support rather than reject it. This is a big coup for Gala Games. Especially if they can get several titles to market quickly to take advantage of the hype. And potentially a major windfall for Epic Games, whose store has long overshadowed by the Steam behemoth.

Grit is First to the Epic Games Store

Grit, a wild west themed battle royale game, is the first slated for launch on the Epic Games store. This will be the first web3 game sold on the Epic Games Store.

Supporting solo, duo, and squad matches, Grit promises epic shootouts with guns, horses, and explosives! Sounds like a good start. But we’re also going to need a selection of different game modes, a wide variety of well-built maps, support for player-built maps, and other cool stuff like that.

Grit has an amazing opportunity here as the first web3 game to appear in the Epic store. And a big responsibility. As the first to be put in front of mainstream gaming, Grit needs to show that blockchain gaming is legitimate and not just a way to push more micro-transactions onto gamers. They also need to make sure that the barrier to entry is low. IE, have a reasonably priced entry point for new players and don’t make them deal with setting up wallets and exchanging currencies just to start playing. And finally, they need to make a fun game.

They have a good start with a proven game type and an interesting theme. Hopefully, Grit will deliver.

Gunslinger Sale

Gunslingers are unique, generative character NFTs. 10,000 are available in this sale, with the sale opening in stages to different groups. As I write this, Gunslinger boxes are available to Galaverse attendees and holders of Founder’s Node Licenses for $1200. On June 8th, Gala Gold members have added to the whitelist, and the price increased to $1500. For the public sale, live on June 9th, the price will be half of the floor price for the boxes on the secondary market, or $1500, whichever is more.

Gunslingers are playable character avatars in the Grit game. Each character comes with its own set of attributes and perks. Characters feature loadouts, allowing players to customize their characters. The Gunslingers are currently boxed. It’s unclear when they will be revealed

And while these Gunslingers have founder NFT type prices, there’s no mention that owning these character skins will offer any special perks or bonuses beyond what a regular player might have.
