Having completed their first roadmap (titled Crafting and Nurture) with the implementation of wearable Augments, Genopets brings us their roadmap for the next phase, this one titled The Road to Market!

Genopets introduced customization of NFT Pets with Augments not long ago. This completed their previous roadmap, so now they introduce us to a new one, focused on Augments and PvP games! This next phase is also flagged as the ‘final road to phase II’. Implying that there will be a new phase after this — perhaps even an official launch?

Whatever the far future holds is still unknown. But we do know a bit about Genopets’ plans for the near term, which include Augment stats, Augment recycling and re-rolling, an in-app, player to player marketplace, and more! Let’s take a look at some of it.

Genopets visual upgrades on the way

Augments Updates

Augments have been around for a while in Genopets. But it was just recently that they became wearable. However, Augments are just cosmetic at the moment. But that will soon change as the next item up on the Genopets roadmap is Augment stats. Genopets have three stats that can be increased via Augments, attack, speed, and defense. These will be used in two other upcoming features, Step Battles, and turn-based, PvP combat.

And for the crafters, they will also implement Augment recycling, expediting, and re-rolling. We don’t yet have any details on these features, but these will all likely incur a cost of GENE or KI tokens. And you can also expect that recycling Augments will return fewer materials than were used to craft it in the first place.

The addition of an in-app, player to player marketplace will help facilitate the buying and selling of Augments, letting players find the perfect Augments for their Pet, and allowing dedicated crafters a chance to earn some tokens for their efforts.

Streaks and Updated Homepage

To encourage regular use. Genopets will also implement streak bonuses. Players who walk and keep their Genopets fed and happy on a consistent basis can earn special rewards and prizes.

Along with these new features comes an updated homepage, allowing players easier access to all of the offered functionality.

Step Battles and PvP

Genopets includes a new game on their roadmap. Known as Step Battles, this feature pits players against each other in challenge events to accumulate the most steps in a certain amount of time.

There will also be a future, turn-based PvP game where players use their Genopets in battle against each other. Augments will play a crucial role in these contests, but we don’t have any details on the game itself yet.

What is Genopets?

Genopets is a free-to-play, move-to-earn game built on the Solana blockchain. When using the Genopets app, players collect steps while walking. They convert those steps into Energy, and then use that Energy to level up their Pet or exchange for KI tokens. KI tokens are the main currency in Genopets and used to craft Crystals, upgrade Pets, and maintain Habitats.

Genopets visually change as they level up. Higher level Pets also offer a better step to Energy conversion rate. Genopets recently introduced new level-based Energy conversion system that greatly reduced the amount of Energy generated by players. Especially those with low level Genopets.

Genopets features a number of NFTs, as well as the new style ‘SFTs’ for stackable resources. The main NFTs are Genesis Genopets and Habitats. SFT Resources include Raw Crystals, Refined Crystals, Terraform Seeds, and Pet Augments. Pet Augments are used to customize the Genopets.

Genopets is currently in closed beta, though finding an invitation code is not difficult.

Players of Genopets have been crafting Augments for some time. But now, at long last, players can use those Augments to customize their pet’s appearance — including tail, mane, color, and more!

Genopets takes another step forward in Phase 2 of their game development with the addition of Augment equipping. Genopets owners are no longer stuck with the default look for their pets. Now they can use a variety of Augments to change the appearance of their pet, from various body parts to even the color!

More About Augments

If players don’t own any Augment NFTs, Genopets provides everyone with a few, free, starter Augments that are account bound. Players who do own Augment NFTs can transfer them into and out of the game via the Genopets website.

Unfortunately, there is no fitting room option, so the Augments just get equipped when selected. Augments can be swapped once attached, but not removed directly. So if you only have a single item of a specific part, once you equip it, you can’t remove it! Also, Coloring Crystals, are burned when used. Which kind of sucks when there is no warning and no preview! Hopefully these issues will be fixed soon.

Augments are made by players via Habitats. Players need to use Crystals (also acquired from Habitats) and KI or GENE tokens to craft Augments. When creature battles are introduced in a future update, Augments will provide extra combat moves for the pet.

In addition to equippable Augments, Genopets also introduced a new, daily step tracking chart, and the Genodex, an in-app compendium of every Genopet in the game. This lets players easily see other people’s Genopets and provides a place for everyone to show off their fancy Augments!

Up next for Genopets to finish out phase 2 are turn-based, PvP mini-games, and a system where players can earn rewards by completing challenges. I imagine this will be tasks such as walk X miles this week and things like that.

Genopets announced plans for their next NFT mint — on Bitcoin Ordinals! Known as Bitcoin Babies, this collection launches Genopets into cross-chain functionality and brings the first game utility to Bitcoin NFTs.

Bitcoin Ordinals have been the talk of the town the past few weeks. And while some the NFT collections on Bitcoin Ordinals have proven to be quite valued by the community, there hasn’t been much in the way of game NFTs.

This upcoming mint for Genopets will change that. Officially called Gold Baby Genopet Bitcoin NFTs, these NFTs will also be usable in the Genopets, move to earn app. This collection not only brings Genopets into the growing world of cross-chain applications, but will also make them the first Bitcoin Ordinals to be playable in a game!

Gold Baby Genopets Mint

The Gold Baby Genopets mint launches on Magic Eden, which is rapidly becoming a go-to launchpad and marketplace across numerous blockchains. And though these new Bitcoin Babies exist on the Bitcoin blockchain, the Genopets game will remain entrenched on Solana.

They say that all OG members, as well as Genesis Genopet and Habitat holders can earn a spot on the whitelist. Though we don’t yet have any details about what it will take to actually get on the list. And even if you do get a whitelist spot, they’ve already said that it will be oversubscribed. The Genopets team has also informed us that the number of Bitcoin Babies will be limited to the 100s, so expect there to be some competition for this mint.

The cost of these mints is still to be decided, though the team says it will somewhere around the floor of Genesis. It’s unclear if they mean Genesis Pets, which are at about 19 SOL, or Habitats, which are going for under 10 SOL. Or maybe somewhere in the middle? Hopefully this will be clarified soon. Rumors also have it that minting Ordinals can be expensive. Even as much as 0.01 BTC!?

We do have a time and date for the mint — April 13th, at 8:30am PT. Watch the Genopets Discord chat and Twitter feed for updates about the Gold Babies mint.

Also, if you’re new to Bitcoin Ordinals (as most of us are), Magic Eden has a guide for setting up your wallet and preparing for the mint.

Genopets added two new mini-games to their pet-owning, walk and earn game. Called Feed and Fetch, these mini-games are used by players to keep their Genopets fed and happy, which in turn will result in better Step to Energy conversion.

Earlier this year Genopets added Food and Toy items to their game. Once per day, when a player converts their Steps into Energy, they receive a random selection of 3-6 items.

The Genopets team received some criticism after their initial release of these mini-games. The gameplay for both mini-games takes some getting used to. And even once you understand how to play, it was still easy to mess up and lose resources. And even though players receive these new items for free as part of the game, losing them without receiving anything in return still doesn’t feel too great.

some Genopets items
some Genopets items for the mini-games

And so, in an upcoming update they will make some changes to help alleviate these issues. First, there will be a practice mode, allowing players to familiarize themselves with the games before needing to use any of their actual items. They also plan to make the hitboxes a little bigger, and the indicator movement a little slower.

Players will also get to see the actual numeric values for the items they use to Feed and play Fetch with their pets.

Currently, the nurture statuses don’t have any actual effect on step conversion, but they will in the future. So it’s a good idea to get in the habit and practice of keeping your Genopet maxxed out on happiness.

The next major update for Genopets will include the addition of Augments. Augments will allow players to customize their Genopet’s appearance via body parts and color. These Augments won’t be cosmetic-only, they will also play a role in future versions of the game.

In addition to various bugfixes and interface improvements, the latest update from Genopets adds the possibility of finding Toys and Food for your Pets when Banking Steps! These items, known as Banking Rewards, will play a part in upcoming mini-games.

The items available for Genopets continues to grow with the recent addition of Augment crafting, and now, the latest update which includes Banking Rewards. Genopets refers to the process of converting your Steps to Energy as Banking. Steps are reset every day, so players who don’t Bank them, lose them.

Now players have additional incentive to Bank their Steps with Banking Rewards! Whenever players Bank 1000 Steps or more, they receive a random assortment of items. We haven’t been given any details on the mechanics of this feature, so we don’t know if it matters if you Bank often or just once a day. Hopefully we’ll get some more information on how Banking Rewards work in the near future.

new Food and Toys in Genopets
new Food and Toys in Genopets

Though we can’t give use them yet, Food and Toys will be needed for upcoming mini-games, called Fetch and Feed. Food and Toys are in-game items only, though they may offer options for converting them into NFTs in the future.

In addition, for those who love finding the best screenshot, players can now zoom and pan around their Pet to find the perfect angle! This update also includes a new invite a friend feature. For now, each player only has a one-use referral code.

Future plans for Genopets include the ability to equip Augments, and a Pokemon-style battle system

Energy Conversion

Energy is used to level up Pets, and can also be converted into KI tokens with a Habitat. Players gain Energy by Banking their Steps. But Genopets doesn’t offer a set conversion rate for Banking Steps into Energy. A couple of factors affect the conversion rate.

One is the Pet’s level. Higher level Pets offer better Energy conversion rates. The number of Steps Banked for the day also matter. Players see diminishing returns as they Bank more daily steps, though again, higher level Pets have better results here as well. And finally, there is Pet Happiness. Pets want attention. Players can make their Pets happy simply by petting them. This involves placing two fingers on the screen and petting your Pet by moving them around for a few seconds. The happier your Pet, the better the Energy conversion rate.

The latest update shows the player their current conversion rate when they Bank their steps.

On December 8th, Genopets officially releases the first phase of their crafting feature. Offering hundreds of different items, hidden recipes, and the potential to create Enhanced and Superior versions of Augments, the Genopets crafting system leaves plenty of room for experimentation.

Augments for Genopets already exist thanks to the rewards from their recent Treasure Hunt (now finished). This event allowed players to craft special Augments that won’t ever be crafted again!

But not to worry crafters, Genopets plans for this first release to include 189 variations of Augments (with 21 unique visual styles) and 28 variations of Chroma Crystals available for crafting! And though players still can’t attach Augments to their Pets yet, soon, they will be able to start crafting. The crafting interface for Genopets is scheduled to open on December 8th at 10pm UTC.

Players will need to either own a Habitat or rent one in order to craft. They will also need Refined Crystals, KI tokens, and GENE tokens. There will be a number of Recipes that players must discover on their own. Presumably this will involve submitting a new combination to the crafting interface. The Genopets team has promised to reveal more details over the coming days.

a Chroma Crystal
a Chroma Crystal

Chroma Crystals and Augments

With the introduction of crafting, players will be able to create Chroma Crystals and Augments. Both are NFTs and tradeable on Magic Eden.

Chroma Crystals are used to modify the colors of Pets. Different types allow players to change the primary, secondary, and glow colors for their Genopet.

Augments function as both cosmetic items and stat boosters. Though not used now, when battle mode is introduced to Genopets, the stats of your Pet will make a huge difference.

Augments come in seven different types. These are eyes, ears, tails, wings, manes, antennae, and horns. Augments not only affect the Pet’s appearance, but they also increase their base stats. Every Pet starts with the same base numbers for health, defense, speed and hit points. Leveling up a Pet increases their stats, while Augments allow players to customize which stats they want to boost on their Pet.

On top of that, each Augment unlocks an ability, either a hack or attack move in battle. So with seven Augment slots available, players should have plenty of options for customizing for their preferred battle style.

Augments have three additional attributes. Style, which affects the Augment’s appearance, Class, which affects the power levels and stat modifiers (basically, rarity, with higher rarity items being more powerful), and Variant, which makes the Augment slightly different. Variants may offer different stat boosts or bonus abilities, and come in Enhanced and Superior forms. Enhanced Variants tend to be stronger than the original version of the Augment, while Superior is the strongest Variant.

In the future, additional variants will appear in the game through special quests or challenges.

After some delay due to fallout from the collapse of FTX, Genopets launches their Legendary Lab, allowing players to craft the first Pet Augments ever! Those with the missing pages NFTs and the required number of tokens can attempt a creation at the lab, receiving one of several, random items.

The collapse of FTX caused some fallout in the blockchain space. Part of that resulted in Magic Eden needing to shut down SFT (stackable NFTs) trading on their site. But now those issues are cleared up, and Genopets opens up their Legendary Lab, the final destination for everyone who participated in their recent Treasure Hunt.

Acquired via a recent the Treasure Hunt puzzle contest, players can assemble the missing pages from a recipe book to craft a random item in the Genopets Legendary Lab. Players need all five of these pages, numbering 13 through 17. The pages are NFT and they can all be purchased on Magic Eden. Though some are rarer, and more expensive, than others.

In addition to the pages, crafting in the Legendary Lab also costs 5 GENE tokens, and 5 Genotype Crystals (all of the same type). The results are random. The best prizes are special Pet Augments. This can be attached to Pets to provide stat bonuses or special abilities. In Genopets, all legendary Augments will have a capped supply. The maximum possible supply for this legendary Ear Augment is 300, though it’s likely that fewer than that will be crafted. In fact, this particular legendary Ear Augment will never be craftable again!

Legendary Lab potential results

At the moment, the Augments don’t do anything. But, in the upcoming combat feature of Genopets, Augments will provide Pets with stats boosts and/or new abilities.

A lesser, though also interesting prize, is the Chroma Crystals. These Crystals allow players to change the colors of their Pet. Crystals come in three variations, Adsynth, Subsynth, and Lume. Adsyneth Crystals let you change your Pet’s primary color, Subsynth Crystals affect the secondary color, and Lume crystals change the highlight color.

The sudden collapse of the FTX exchange and all of its associated organizations sent shockwaves through the crypto markets. It took less than a week to move from regular functionality to complete bankruptcy and fraud investigations! This event affected the entire crypo industry, including web3 gaming.

Once valued at $32 billion, the quick, nosedive crash of FTX and its related tokens shook the blockchain industry.

During less than a week in November of 2022, the FTX exchange platform saw rumors about lack of funds, a bank run on their held assets, a withdrawal freeze, a potential takeover bid from Binance which was quickly retracted, investigations by the SEC, more rumors about their CEO feeling to Argentina, mysterious movements of large number of tokens off of the exchange, claims that the FTX app had become malware, a general declaration of bankruptcy for FTX and all associated organizations including Alameda Research, and possible detention in the Bahamans for a number of key executives! This article has a pretty good timeline of the events so far in this debacle.

This drama has not nearly played out yet. But it has already had major effects across the markets. And is likely a leading cause for the recent drop in the crypto markets. Exchanges quickly jumped to prove they held sufficient liquid assets to cover their user’s deposits, though many still saw a significant outflow of funds as crypto users feared a cascading wave of insolvency.

FTX, Solana, and Other Web3 Projects

Solana took an especially hard hit, as it was heavily partnered with FTX and Alameda Research. In fact Serum, a notable DEX, or decentralized exchange, on Solana, was forced to completely redeploy their app because the upgrade keys for the system are owned by FTX! Apparently, the new SFTs from Genopets (and other projects) are utilizing the Serum DEX. And so, the Magic Eden marketplace was forced to halt all SFT trading during the upgrade (which is still ongoing at the time of this article)!

The Solana token took major blow, losing over 50% of its value over the past week. Pretty much every app and game in existence on the Solana blockchain was forced to quickly push out a statement about the safety of their user’s funds and the status of their association with FTX and related entities. Alameda Research, an investment arm of FTX, had actually invested in a number of web3 games, including Decimated.

Yuga Labs, creators of Bored Ape Yacht Club, also had FTX as one of their investors. And, up until last week, held significant funds on the FTX exchange. However, in a very timely coincidence, they managed to move their funds off the exchange before they halted withdrawals.

This shouldn’t directly affect any game development. Many NFT collections saw price crashes during all of this. But a lot of that is related to the drop in the value of the related blockchain tokens. But the fallout from token values dropping and potential future investigations into fraud relating to Alameda Research could cause some issues for game developers.

So far, everyone not directly involved with FTX is talking the good talk. Promising to stay strong, protect their users, and continue development. However, we are likely to see a lot more caution from outside investors. And there is some concern that Solana may never recover, as new developers may opt to develop their apps on a less volatile chain.

Final Thoughts

The FTX bankruptcy affected everyone in the crypto market, whether directly or indirectly.

And from what I’ve seen so far, it seems that the FTX group was run by a bunch of degenerate traders who came up with the idea to use other people’s money for their trades rather than their own. And this is certainly not unheard of. After all, it’s basically how every banking and investment institution works. However, one major difference here is that a crypto exchange won’t receive a government bailout like a bank would. And so, FTX will likely go under, the executives won’t get the nice big bonuses we see for bank executives, and the biggest investors will receive the bulk of any retrieved funds, leaving the regular folks to bear the brunt of the loss.

And for those with funds still on FTX, which includes millions from at least one venture fund, it could be years before those funds become available again. This collapse is a huge black eye for crypto in general. Especially on top of the insolvency of Celsius and Voyager earlier this year.

But, hopefully some good will come from the destruction. Perhaps greater transparency and self-regulation from exchanges? A better informed user base? Or maybe more focus on decentralization and higher quality of exchanges, both centralized and decentralized? It’s hard to predict, but crypto, and web3 gaming are here to stay, despite any setbacks along the way.

Genopets introduces a new feature for Habitat owners — the ability to pause the degradation of their Habitat. Normally, Habitats degrade daily, but with this new feature, players can pay a fee to Hibernate their Habitat, and halt the decay functionality for a limited amount of time.

Habitats are an important part of the larger Genopets ecosystem. Owning one isn’t required for participation in the basic game. But, Habitats do allow players to convert excess Energy into KI tokens, and also use those tokens to create Refined Crystals. These Crystals will be used with the Pet Augmentation feature, hopefully coming soon, but they are also needed to Repair and maintain Habitats.

Habitats have a limited lifespan. One that counts down every day. A Habitat that decays down to zero can no longer produce Refined Crystals. Repairing a Habitat costs 1 Crystal, which must be the same type as the Habitat, per day.

So, since a level 1 Habitat can produce one Crystal each day, it is self sustaining as long as you walk enough steps to convert Energy to KI tokens, and then use those tokens to refine Crystals. However, higher level Habitats can make multiple Crystals, making them a more valuable item for those who hope to generate income from this game.

But for those who need to pause their Habitat decay, there is now an option for that. And though the Genopets whitepaper doesn’t mention anything about a restriction on the length of the Hibernation period, the interface limits players to a maximum of twelve days.

Hibernation also comes with a cost. The first cost is KI tokens. Ten tokens per day that you want to Hibernate for a level 1 Habitat. The price moves up to 16 KI per day for a level 2, and 23 KI per day for a level 3. On top of that, any non-Genesis Habitat must also pay an additional, flat fee of five (5) GENE tokens. And, they can only be Hibernated once in their entire lifetime. Non-Genesis Habitats include Guild Habitats, and those produced from Seeds made in Genesis Habitats.

The Hibernation feature is available on the Genopets inventory page.

Genopets is a free-to-play, move-to-earn game built on the Solana blockchain. When using the Genopets app, players collect steps while walking. They convert those steps into Energy, and then use that Energy to level up their Pet or convert into KI tokens. KI tokens are the main currency in Genopets and used to craft Crystals, upgrade their Genopet, and maintain habitats.

Genopets visually change as they level up. And higher level Pets offer a better step to Energy conversion rate. Genopets recently introduced new level-based Energy conversion system that greatly reduced the amount of Energy generated by players. Especially those with low level Genopets.

Genopets features a number of NFTs, as well as the new style ‘SFTs’ for basic resources. The main NFTs are Genesis Genopets and Habitats. SFT Resources include Raw Crystals, Refined Crystals, Terraform Seeds, and other upcoming game additions such as Pet Augments.

Genopets is currently running a special Treasure Hunt for those who like to solve puzzles. Check their Twitter for more info on the latest challenge.

Since before they even began their Beta, the Genopets team has been working to get approval for integration with Google Fit. At long last, this effort has come to fruition and with the latest update, the Genopets app has permission to interact with Google fit, hopefully providing a more accurate step counter for Android users!

The latest Genopets update for Android devices requires the installation of Google Fit. Then, once the Genopets and Google Fit apps are linked, Genopets will use the step counter from Google Fit for their calculations. There have been some ongoing issues with Genopets properly counting steps on Android devices. So hopefully, this update will clear up any lingering issues in that area.

It’s also nice to see web3 apps get some attention from mainstream companies. Being accepted by Google Fit, one of the biggest fitness apps around, is a big win for the Genopets team. This also opens the door for integration with wearable devices such as watches.

In addition, with this update comes the introduction of Pet petting! By swiping two fingers across the screen, players can pet their Genopet. This has no game effect at the moment, though there is an associated sound and animation in response to the petting. In the future, Genopets will include a pet maintenance feature, requiring players to tend to their pet on a regular basis to keep them happy.

More About Augments

Genopets continues to release new information and teasers about Pet Augmentation. Augments act as both a physical change to your Genopet, and a stat bonus. Augments come in the form of tails, antennae, horns, and other various physical body parts. These will alter how your Genopet looks. In addition, Augments provide a multiplier to a Pet’s base stats, and also provide a skill. Skills can be attacks, buffs, or hacks. These will be used in the Genopets Pokemon style, battle game.

Rarer Augments offer larger multipliers. Augments also evolve with the Genopet — growing in size and detail with each evolution stage.

Crafting Augments requires a Recipe, a Reagent, and a combination of Crystals and GENE tokens.

We don’t have a release date yet for Augmentations, but Genopets does still have an ongoing Treasure Hunt with an Augmentation reward. They are up to puzzle three now, but you can still join in and solve the puzzles for a chance to craft a limited edition, Legendary Augmentation!

Players can earn via cashing out their KI tokens, crafting and selling Crystals, or renting out Habitats. Habitats are the main gateway into play to earn. Each Habitat holds one Genopet. Habitats are needed to convert Energy into KI, and for all crafting. Players must maintain their Habitats or production stops.

Genopets includes two tokens, GENE and KI. GENE is the governance token, while KI is the main game currency. The game is currently in beta, and they send out new invitation codes on a weekly basis. Follow Genopets on Twitter and Discord for more information.
