When we last looked at Farsite they had just released the first phase of their play and earn alpha. Now, phase 2 brings several important new features that should help boost the economic and player activity in the game. This update features two new space stations, each with its own local market. And, the addition of in-game markets for trading Components.

The latest release from Farsite brings us two new stations. Aside from the original station in the HOM system, the game now also has stations available in NEXUS and MEBO. This is the first introduction of local economies into the game.

Also, at the request of the players, Farsite has increased the levels of storage capacity across the board. From stations to warehouses to cargo holds. More space for everyone! In addition, the production speed for Components was increased to be five times faster!

The Farsite pre-alpha currently supports ship flying, navigation between star systems, asteroid mining, planetary mining, resource refinement, component production, and module production.

New Stations and Components Markets

Farsite market interface

The two additional stations make it easier for the outer planets to get their goods to market, while also creating additional income opportunities for those willing to compare prices and haul goods from station to station. The marketplaces for all of the stations can be accessed with the same interface. You don’t actually have to be present in the system to use the market. However, if you ever want to move the items, you’ll have to go pick them up.

But another new addition, equally as important, is the Components market. Finally, players will be able to buy the items in-game that are needed Module and Ship production. And, since Components are in-game items only, the few players who could produce Modules, were those who could also make all of the necessary Components. Now, since Farsite has a Components market, we should see some increased economic activity, though it may take some time to get up to speed.

Components are needed to make Modules. And Modules are vital to the ship gameplay. Even as a rookie asteroid miner, you can’t do anything without a mining laser, a scanner (for locating asteroids to mine), and a cargo container (for transporting the harvested resources). Since Modules are NFTs, we will hopefully see more inventory arriving on Open Sea soon!

What is Farsite?

Often compared to Eve Online, Farsite is a space-themed, blockchain-powered MMO game with a complex, virtual economy. Players own starships and sectors, build facilities to harvest and process resources, create parts, components, and even starships. Players own and produce all the items in the game. Building items requires a blueprint, components, a base on a planet, and Credits to pay for services. Establish a base on a Planet in a hunt for rare materials to craft powerful Ships and Modules, trade on the open market, and fight for loot and honor to govern the entire Constellation!

Resource production varies from planet to planet and even among plots on the same planet. With localized markets, logistics such as transportation and storage become important. Players take on various roles as part of a galactic community. Players could be a hauler, completing contracts to move goods between stations. They could also be a miner, gathering resources from asteroids, or a manufacturer creating components, modules, and starships. The universe of Farsite offers space for governance over stars, as well as room for mercenaries, pirates, politicians, and, traders.

Farsite star map

Farsite boasts an interesting feature called Credit-backed NFTs, or cNFTs. Every Ship and Module is a cNFT, backed by a certain number of game Credits. At any time, players may burn cNFTs to destroy the NFT and receive the Credits. This feature guarantees that every cNFT always has a minimum value and provides a useful burn mechanic for excess NFTs.

The game is currently in open, pre-alpha. Pre-alpha is PvP-free, allowing players to accumulate Resources and build up infrastructure before conflict descends upon the galaxy.

The leading trio formed by Alien Worlds, Splinterlands and Axie Infinity remains as last week. We can see Axie slowly losing some steam again after getting his spot back in the top 10 a couple of weeks ago.
The casual gaming projects are still doing well. Solitaire Blitz jumps straight into the fifth place, thanks to an easy onboarding experience, a simple gameplay and a large pre-existing user-base.

No big surprises in the NFT market this week. The overall trading volume is still decreasing and the top projects remain there, with more or less stable floor prizes. We still get the occasional projects pumps like the previous week, but the overall NFT market remains pretty bearish.

The much anticipated open alpha for Farsite launched on July 7th, 2022. But not with the frenzy of activity that many had expected. Though several new features were added to the game, including asteroid mining, as well as Component and Module crafting, there are some unfortunate limitations that make this release not as exiting as it could be.

Farsite, the massive multiplayer game about empires in space, has been steadily adding new components to their alpha. The latest release brings us asteroid/comet mining, factory production, and an opening of the game to the public.

Farsite crate sale
get your Crates at a discount!

To celebrate the alpha launch, Farsite is offering crates for a 30% discount until July 21st. Also, all crates purchased and opened during this time have five times (5x) as many Credits as normal.

With all of this, and being free to play, Farsite was expected to launch into open alpha with a bang. Unfortunately, it kind of limped out of the gate. Instead of intrepid miners soaring out of the starbases in search of valuable resources and factories across the systems gearing up production and preparing for ship construction, we have a lot of players discovering that there is nothing for them to do!

Farsite Open Alpha Mining

Open space mining should be the catalyst that brings free-to-play players flocking to the game and joining Academies. Unfortunately, only a small selection of players can mine. Those who have both a mining laser and a radar. A lot of players earned a free mining laser from their publicity campaign that included airdrops of game items. But radars are very limited. If you didn’t get one from opening a crate, then you’re mostly out of luck. Only 148 of them exist on Open Sea, and of those, only two are for sale. So, unless you found a radar in a crate, or are willing to shell out $1000, then there will be no mining for you!

Farsite Radar Modules for sale
Farsite Radar Modules

What about player production? Well, unfortunately, Modules require Components. And Components, unlike Modules, don’t exist as NFTs. They are only in-game, and the current in-game marketplace does not support trading them! So, the only players who can actually produce Radar Modules are those who can make their own Components AND Modules. And to be fair, those that are producing Radar Modules are pricing them in the 0.1 to 0.2 ETH range. But they get snapped up quickly, and are sometimes immediately relisted at a higher price!

This bottleneck will clear up eventually, but it sure is an awkward way to open up your game to the masses. Especially when asteroid mining is the only free-to-play option available! There is some relief in sight. The Farsite team has decided to change one of the items it was going to airdrop to early adopters and supporters into a Radar Module. This new, untradeable module is scheduled to drop on July 14th. This coincides with the release of new planet Sectors for sale.

Resource Market Depression

The first thing most existing players will notice when logging into the alpha is that their storage space is now limited. It can be increased for a monthly cost in Credits, but the free storage is probably not enough for anyone who has been mining their Sector(s) for a while. And though factory production has opened, the limited marketplace results in very low demand for most materials. With players dumping reserve stocks on the market to make space, prices for all resources are severely depressed across the board.

A second edition of the in-game marketplace is in the works, though we don’t have a release date. This version should include the ability to trade Components and Modules in-game.

Farsite still has a lot of potential. If they can get the rest of the economic pieces in place quickly they have a chance to recover. Unfortunately, as it is right now, the game feels broken for new players. And that is not a good look!

The universe of Farsite offers space for governance over stars, as well as room for mercenaries, pirates, politicians, and, of course, traders.

With the pilot academies opened, and the alpha release arriving soon, Farsite makes plans to open up a new sale for Alpha crates. The addition of asteroid mining is expected to bring an influx of new players to the game. And some of those might want to have a ship of their own rather than beginning the game as a renter!

On the 21st of June, 2022, at 1pm UTC, the Farsite store will open up for a limited time, Alpha crate sale. We don’t know the crate prices yet, but I imagine it will be somewhat similar to their last Alpha crate sale. We also don’t know how many crates will be available. The official announcement says there will be “a tiny drop of new Crates”. So, interpret that as you will!

Alpha crates contain ships and modules, as well as blueprints for both. Crates come in three sizes, Io, Dione, and Club, each with increasingly better contents. The higher level crates also have more guaranteed contents. For example, the Club create is guaranteed to contain a tier 3 original ship blueprint, two module blueprints, a ship hull that is either epic (if small), or rare (if medium), or better! But that’s not it. There will also be a grade 3 module, an alpha series module, a components pack for building a ship, and a bag of Credits!

Farsite Alpha Club crate
Alpha club crate

All the blueprints found in the Alpha crates are the only original blueprints. Any blueprints made in game are considered copies, with limited uses. Also, in some of these crates are Alpha Series Modules. Which, as you might have guessed, are only available in Alpha crates. And finally, the Dione and Club level crates have a chance to contain a legendary Sacura Ship Hull.

As additional incentive, anyone who is a member in a Pilot Academy receives a 10% bonus to the Credits they receive from crates. Meanwhile, the Academy Owners get a 5% kickback from the ETH their Scholars spend in the store.

Alpha on July 7th

Farsite is in kind of a weird place right now. There really isn’t much to do except generate resources that are mostly unwanted. There is even less to do if you aren’t a sector owner. But that all changes with the upcoming alpha, slated for release on July 7th. The first release includes asteroids and comets for miners. Players will be able to fly their own ships, or rent one as a Scholar for a percentage of their haul. They can then fly around, scan for likely targets, mine for resources, and then sell those on the marketplace.

It’s not clear if we’ll have this functionality right when alpha starts, but ship and module production completes the production cycle and drives demand for all those minerals and resources. Then we’ll have space miners and land miners generating basic resources. Refineries turn some of these into more complex resources. Factories assemble components and modules from resources. And finally, shipyards construct ships from modules and resources. Oh, and those mining facilities and refineries and factories and shipyards are also constructed by players!

Or something like that. There is actually a lot of complexity to the economy when you dig into it. And once all of the parts are in place, it will be interesting to see it in motion and figure out where my lonely mining Sector and small squad of ships can best fit in.

We recently reported on Farsite’s upcoming alpha release, originally slated for June 21st. But, the Farsite team decided to delay the alpha until July 7th so that they can include an important feature release, Pilot Academies. Pilot Academies are basically a rental system for starships. This rental system, along with the other planned features will make this alpha release a first, true test of the game economy.

Rental systems in play to earn games are quickly becoming a new standard. We’ve seen very successful rentals in Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, and most recently, Riot Racers (to name a few). Farsite will be joining the list, and decided to delay the alpha launch so that their rental system, known as Pilot Academy, will be ready to go at the same time.

Farsite Pilot Academy

Farsite Pilot Academy banner

Anyone can open an Academy, but if you don’t own any ships, there’s not much point. And though we haven’t been given any glimpses of the interface for Pilot Academies, we have received a few details about the rental system on Discord.

Apparently, it works along these lines. Ship owner puts ship up for rent. Pilot rents ship for set amount of time, and goes out to mine asteroids. At the end of the rental period, pilots can either auto-sell the resources mined from this ship, from which the owner receives a cut of the proceeds, or keep the minerals and pay the commission with their own Credits. Presumably, any mined minerals sold before the rental ends will also have a percentage sent to the owner. This system seems like it would be kind of complex code-wise. Each unit of mineral has to know how it was mined. And then, if it was mined using a rented ship, use that information to backtrack and find out who the rental owner was. I will be interested into see it in action.

It will also be interesting to see if the Academies end up being run more by guilds, or by individuals. I’m not sure that there is functionality to allow multiple players to rent ships through one Academy, though that may be a feature for the dev team to consider in the future.

What else to expect in Farsite Alpha

Farsite ship fitting
dont forget your mining laser

In addition to the Pilot’s Academy, the Farsite Alpha release will bring several other new features to the game. The main one, of course, being the ability to find and mine asteroids for resources. The Pilot Academies would be kind of useless otherwise! But, starting on July 7th, anyone with a ship and a Mining Laser or an Extractor can head out to deep space in search of resource rich asteroids.

This is a big jump from where we are now, as at the moment, only Sector owners can harvest resources. Opening up resource gathering to everyone will really shake up the markets! But, with all these additional resources, we need a use for them. And so, alpha will also include shipbuilding facilities, and the means to use Blueprints to create modules and ships!

On top of this alpha introduces Gate fees. Traveling between star systems is no longer free. Each jump costs Credits, paid in advance. Coupled with the Gate fees will be a new route planner. This allows players to plot out the jumps needed for moving from one system to another to find the shortest and/or safest path.

And so, with these additions, we have the foundations for a much more complex economy. We have resource extraction, we have factories and shipyards to use those resources, we have an in-game market for buying and selling, and we transportation costs in the form of Gate fees!

PvP, including ship destruction and losses of resources, is scheduled to be included in the Beta release.

Back in December of 2021, Farsite launched their pre-alpha, allowing players who owned Sectors, the ability to begin producing resources. Over the succeeding months they added player flight between systems, cargo transport, factories, advanced resource production, an in-game marketplace, and component construction! With several additional features ready to push to production, Farsite prepares for its official alpha launch on June 21st, 2022.

A game economy can be simple or extremely complex. In the case of Farsite, it’s apparent that the team plans for meaningful complexity in their space MMORPG. We already have resource production, refineries to create secondary resources, factories to craft components, and soon, the means to put it all together into ships and modules! All of this, with the addition of limited storage and local markets, provides the foundation for an economy with many specialized roles for players to fill.

And though we don’t yet have all of the economic pieces yet, the upcoming launch of the alpha is a huge milestone for Farsite, one that will see the player-driven economy move into a different gear.

Farsite Alpha Launch

Farsite Advanced Production example
advanced resource production

Alpha launch is planned for June 21st, 2022. Players with blueprints, resources, and factories can begin to craft ships and modules for the ships. This should provide a much-needed demand for resources. Resources that must be transported to the home station to sell. And though there is only one market, on Homestead station, future plans include additional, player-built stations, each with their own local market, creating a network of trade routes and arbitrage opportunities for traveling traders.

For those who don’t own a Sector, alpha brings the chance to scour the systems for asteroids and comets. Find those valuable resources, harvest what you can, and pack them into cargo storage for sale back at the station. Spend Credits for bigger ships, more cargo capacity, or defenses.

With the alpha launch comes an important Credits sink — FTL travel fees. Passing through FTL gates will no longer be free. Pilots must pay a fee in Credits to pass through. To help players navigate through multiple star systems, the game will also include an FTL Route planner, allowing players to pre-set their flight course. We’ll also see an interesting shift with the implementation of cargo capacity. Storage is no longer unlimited, forcing players to make decisions with cargo transportation, resource hoarding,

Given the complexity of a space sim of this sort, the Farsite team also plans to introduce tutorials, known as the Pilot’s Academy, to help new players understand the game.

Farsite gates
the only way to travel!

This launch doesn’t provide free-to-play options, unfortunately. Players must own a ship to play. Future features include contracts (hauling, bounties), player-owned stations, new systems and planets, anomalies, and system governance by players! The official documentation includes factory rentals, so ship rental may find its way into the list as well.

The universe of Farsite offers space for governance over stars, as well as room for mercenaries, pirates, politicians, and, of course, traders.

Farsite boasts an interesting feature called Credit-backed NFTs, or cNFTs. Every Ship and Module is a cNFT. This means it is backed by a certain number of game Credits. At any time, players may burn cNFTs to destroy the NFT and receive the Credits. This feature guarantees that every cNFT always has a minimum value and provides a useful burn mechanic for excess NFTs.

The game is currently in pre-alpha, with alpha scheduled to start in late June 2022. Pre-alpha is PvP free, allowing players to accumulate Resources and build up infrastructure before the conflict is unleashed upon the galaxy.

Until March, Farsite was the only seller of in-game items and NFTs. Most players had to buy resources and ships from crates at the store, and this is about to change.

Starting March 10th, all Farsite players will be able to exchange resources for Credits on an open market. To access the marketplace and sell or buy desired products, players must first travel to the Homestead station.

With the Marketplace Update a new base dismantling feature will be introduced to enable players to free up the space within their sectors and retrieve some of the resources they spent building one.

The New Farsite Marketplace

Players will be able to browse the marketplace by the type of resource or searc for specific resources. Advanced filters for max, min price, quantities, and reputation of the seller will be available from the get-go as well.

Buyers will have to pay a fee for each transaction. The fee is 1% of the purchase price and is paid in credits, the second layer currency of the game. The first layer uses FAR, and 1 FAR = 1000 Credits. All bought resources will be placed in the station’s storage. All transactions are final and can’t be reverted.

The marketplaces, like everything else in the Farsite’s Universe, are location-dependent. Each station symbolizes a market; in order for an item to be exchanged on a market, it must first be brought there on a ship. The number of stations will increase over time as participants are able to construct new ones in order to receive a portion of every trade.

Players will be able to put buy and sell orders on most types of items on stations to highlight the demand for certain items in certain places.

The marketplace will support unique tokens, like Ships and Modules, as well as countable tokens, like Components and Resources.

During Pre-Alpha, players are only able to buy and sell resources. However, further down the road, the market will evolve and will allow players to place orders for ships, modules and other unique items.

External NFT markets, such as OpenSea, might potentially be used to trade items. Within a short period of time, the FAR Token will be published on multiple centralized exchanges and liquidity pools will be available on decentralized exchanges.

Farsite is a blockchain-powered MMO game with elements of real-time strategy. The game’s economy uses aspects of decentralized finance on the Ethereum blockchain. Players can take on all kinds of roles to be part of a bigger intergalactic economy. Players could be a hauler, a complete contracts by moving goods between space stations. They could also be a miner, gathering resources, or a manufacturer who creates tools and items. The universe of Farsite also offers space for governance over stars, mercenaries, pirates, politicians and of course traders.

The Gates open in Farsite on January 27th. Players will be able to travel through them to visit different systems and transport resources between sectors. A different kind of gate also opens at the same time. The gate to the next level of the crafting economy! This comes in the form of Refineries, which allow the production of new resources.

Farsite continues its steady release of small additions to its game, though this one is actually pretty big. Beginning on January 27th, starship pilots are no longer restricted to flying around in their home system. On that day the Gates open up, allowing players to navigate to and from various star systems!

Gates to the stars!

During pre-alpha, Gate travel is free. In the future, there will be fees involved in traveling through Gates, in addition to fuel costs. The fuel cost increases based on weight of the ship and distance traveled. Gates have predefined connections, and only go to one place. However, stars may have multiple gates leading to different systems. Not only will players be able to move between systems, but they can also load up their ships with cargo for transportation!

Let the Refining Begin!

This last bit is important because this upcoming release also sees the introduction of Refineries. Sector Owners have already been building basic Mining structures and harvesting raw resources. But it’s in the Refineries where the more specialized resources are created. Processing resources at a Refinery yields one core resource plus one or two extra or side resources. For example, processing Hydrogen Gas yields Hydrogen, Solid CO2, and Planetary Dust.

Refineries are quite expensive. Costing 500,000 Credits plus several thousand Resources. It’s unclear if there will be some sort of in-game market available or if every Refinery owner is expected to gather the resources themselves. But being able to produce second tier Resources will likely be an invaluable ability. Refining costs Credits, Resources, and Time. Amounts vary depending on what is being processed.

I love the release pace for Farsite. Even though we’re not getting huge chunks of game at a time, what we do get is meaningful in some way and so far, has been a rock solid experience. I look forward to the next steps. There are still plenty to go! Markets, base construction, ship crafting, planetary governance, and more!

The space exploration game Farsite has opened its NFT crate sale to the public. Different crates with different prices give players ownership over ships, blueprints, modules, or extra credits. The sale requires a connected Metamask wallet with ETH, as prices start at 0.05 ETH and the most expensive available crate costs 0.35 ETH.

The crate sale for Farsite has been hyped quite a lot, because players will need credits in order to be able to purchase territory on one or more planets. To buy that land you will need Credits, the name of the in-game currency. However, you can only get Credits if you destroy an NFT containing some.

These so-called collateral NFTs or cNFTs are generally spaceships. So you will need to buy a crate, get spaceship, and then destroy the spaceship to obtain Credits. Out of the 4 different crates, only 3 are still available. When you order 3 crates or more, you will get a small percentage discount. This discount increased when you order more crates.

  • Ceres Crate – 0.05 ETH – Ship hull or module, some components, and double credits. (Time Limited)
  • Deimos Crate – 0.15 ETH – Ship or Module Blueprint T2+, Shiphull, Module, Components and Credits (2000 max.)
  • Ganymede Crate – 0.35 ETH – Ship Blueprint T4+, Module Blueprint, Ship Hull Rare+, 2x Module, Components, Double Credits

You can check out the store on the Farsite website.

Pre-Alpha

Pre-Alpha gameplay starts on December 14th. Plays can expect to test fly their ships, dock at stations, explore other stars, and visit their planets. Most importantly though, Pre-Alpha marks the point where players begin mining and gathering resources from their Sectors.

If you don’t already own a sector, there are still some available on various planets, though most are quite expensive. For those with less deep wallets, the opportunity to acquire Sectors on new planets arrives on December 9th. Keep an eye on the Farsite Twitter and Discord.
