Still one of the more popular FPS games in the web3 space, ev.io announced a new partnership with Fractal for a series of month long tournaments starting in April. The top players from the tournament earn badges, which give them access to special events with additional earning potential!

ev.io brings a new set of leaderboards to their play and earn, free to play FPS game. In partnership with Fractal, players who connect their Fractal wallets and place at the top of the monthly leaderboards can earn special Platinum Badges. These badges open up access to monthly events with increased prizes!

Fractal Tournament System for ev.io

ev.io kicks off the first of their new format tournaments this month in partnership with Fractal, giving players a chance to earn Proof of Play collectibles. The Platinum version of these collectibles, given out to the top 10% of the players on the leaderboard from that month / season, allow the owners to earn 20x the normal match payouts during the next monthly, Deathmatch Earn event!

To be ranked on the leaderboards, players just need to connect to the game with their Fractal Wallet and play ev.io in any game mode at any time during the month. The game is free to play and the leaderboards are open to everyone. Though those with Ev NFTs earn significantly more e, a cumulative point system that will be used for rankings (and which also cashes out to SOL tokens if you accumulate enough of them).

At the end of the season, participants receive Proof of Play collectibles based on their final standing. Platinum for the top 10% of the players, Gold to the to 40%, Silver the top 70%, and Bronze to everyone else. Only holders of Platinum PoPs from the latest season receive the bonus earnings in the Deathmatch Earn event.

If you can’t earn the Platinum level reward, you can always craft it instead! Players can also craft these collectibles into higher tier versions. The exchange rate is burning three of one tier for one of the next highest tier (eg 3 Bronze to make a Silver). So to go from nothing to Platinum would require 27 Bronze PoPs or their equivalent. These items will be tradeable on the Fractal marketplace. Proof of Play collectibles can also be merged and crafted across seasons, providing ongoing value to these badges, even in future seasons.

What is ev.io?

ev.io is a browser based FPS with NFTs on the Solana blockchain. Players earn game coins known as e, simply by playing, with bonuses for being a registered user (rather than guest12345) and for equipping game NFTs. Accumulate 10,000 of these tokens, and you can cash them out for $5 worth of SOL cryptocurrency. The in-game tokens have no other use at the moment, but that may change in a future update.

Getting started playing ev.io is absurdly simple. Simply visit their website and click on Play Now. The game runs in a browser, and you don’t even need to login to play! Though you will want to login if you want to earn points. After that you jump, aim, shoot, and try out different weapons.

The game runs very smoothly, and has an Unreal Tournament feel to it. Arenas are pretty bare bones, with lots of corridors and high ceilings for jumping. Players start with a basic rifle and grenades but can pick up various other weapons that spawn around the map. Matches are timed and generally action packed. Public servers are always available and players can setup their own, custom game lobbies as well.

ev.io features a leveling up system, allowing players to customize to their playstyle by purchasing attributes such as as reduced reload time or the ability to triple jump. In the future, players will also be able to level up their NFTs to increase their earnings.

The popular FPS ev.io has created a new game mode called Snipe the Streamer. In this mode, streamers can setup special rooms and challenge their viewers to beat them in a one vs many competition!

Stream sniping is a tactic where players will try to join the same game that a streamer is playing, and use the info from the stream to track down the streaming player and kill / harass them. In fact, most FPS streamers have a delay on their broadcast to help avoid these situations. But ev.io is turning this concept on its head, introducing a new Snipe the Streamer game mode.

To play this mode, streamers will start a match, and then post the link in their Twitch channel. Anyone who joins will be automatically teamed with the other players who are fighting against the streamer. To make up for the team imbalance, the streamer will receive some perks. During the match they will have enhanced abilities and weapons, as well as taking only 5% of the normal damage.

The other players who join have a limited number of lives. If they run out, they are booted from the server, and the next player in the queue takes their place. The ev.io team recommends that you have at least six opponents for this game mode. The game host will also have some settings options they can change, such as how many lives each player gets.

And you don’t have to be a streamer to use this mode. Friend groups can choose to play this as well.

Other features in the works

But this new game mode isn’t all that is happening with ev.io. They also just added a new map called Bedlam.

In addition, they are working hard on improving their server performance as well as creating a ranking and NFT leveling system. They also plan to have a store with a rotating set of NFTs available, and a battle pass style system with “Quest Cards”.

There is still a lot to come for this free to play, browser-based FPS!

The first elements of crafting come to the award winning ev.io as they introduce item burning. Item burning allows players to burn certain game NFTs, to improve other game NFTs. And though it may not seem that exciting in of itself, the potential for crafting and item customization should spark some interest in players!

This new feature in the FPS ev.io revolves around the idea of “earning NFTs”, and “non-earning NFTs”. Most NFTs in ev.io have an earn value of 1, allowing players to receive bonuses to their token earnings when playing with those items equipped. But, a few, special edition NFTs have an earn value of 0. And that’s where the burn comes into play.

Players can burn an earning NFT, to make a non-earning NFT into an earning NFT. And best of all, the improved NFT receives an earn rate appropriate for its rarity, no matter the rarity of the burned NFT. So that means you can burn common NFTs to make higher rarity special edition cards into earners. In effect, potentially getting a higher NFT value back than what you put in!

Now, at the moment, the options for non-earning NFTs are somewhat limited. In fact, there are only a handful of character skins that fall into this category. But the ev.io team says that this is just the very first step of their crafting system. So we will hopefully see more options in future updates!

For now, anyone who has the NFTs for the burner or just wants to see the interface can visit https://ev.io/burn/ . NFTs for ev.io can be purchased on the Fractal marketplace.

Players have voted and selected the winners of the Gam3r’s Choice Awards! With eighteen categories and dozens of nominees, this event brought a lot of gaming communities out to vote for their favorite games.

After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Gam3r’s Awards Winners List

Here is the full list of winners.

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

I’m looking forward to 2023, the year of blockchain gaming!

Coinbase decides to get involved in web3 gaming with a special ‘Gaming Days’ event. Offering special events and prizes over the next five days, Coinbase Wallet partnered with several different web3 gaming developers for Gaming Days.

Do you use Coinbase Wallet? If not, you may want to consider setting one up to participate in the upcoming Gaming Days event. For this special happening, Coinbase Wallet has teamed up with five different web3 gaming developers to introduce their games to users while offering players a chance to win special prizes and rewards.

All of these events require connecting with a Coinbase Wallet. Many of these events also have additional requirements. Be sure to check the official Gaming Days page to get the links to the detailed info.

This is great advertising for these games, as the customer base of Coinbase likely includes a large number of people familiar with cryptocurrency but who haven’t yet discovered web3 gaming.

Gaming Days Events

Appropriately enough, the Gaming Days festivities kick off on December 17th with an ev.io tournament hosted by Community Gaming. ev.io was just voted Best Multiplayer and Best eSports game in the Gam3 Awards! So they are certainly getting a lot of attention these days! This particular tournament is a 2-day event, with players battling 1v1 to see who is the best player of this FPS. 5,000 USDC in prizes are up for grabs!

The task for day two (starting December 19th) is much simpler. The first 5,000 Coinbase Wallet users who connect to Pixels receive a special mystery box. On December 20th the partner is Mobox and the task will likely involve interaction with the Momoverse. Users who complete the assigned game quests can earn Mobox avatars and MOMO NFTs.

Next up, its MOBA time with Spider Tanks! On December 21st, connecting your Coinbase wallet to Spider Tanks and playing a few matches will reward you with a Spider Tanks skin or Prop item.

And then Gaming Days winds down with the final event on December 22nd featuring Evaverse. Participants will need to register and then complete 50 Cosmic Cup races. The first 1,000 players to complete the requirements receive a ‘Purtle Pack’ wearable NFT. Players can earn experience for their backpack by wearing it while playing the game in Hoverboard Racing or Cosmic Cup game modes. One the Pack reaches maximum level, the players receives a unique Purtle Pet NFT. What’s a Purtle? I’m glad you asked! In the words of Battlebound (creators of Evaverse), they are “action-focused cats in turtle’s clothes”.

Spider Tanks NFTs from Gaming Days
Spider Tanks NFTs from Gaming Days

Gaming Days starts on December 17th and runs through December 22nd. Download and install Coinbase Wallet to join!

What is Coinbase Wallet?

Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet that includes support for in-app swaps and bridges, as well as displaying NFTs.

Coinbase Wallet can be installed on iOS and Android devices, or as a browser extension. It supports a number of different blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche (just to name a few), and can also connect to a Coinbase account.

With self-custody such a recent hot topic, it’s not too surprising to see a centralized exchange promoting their self-custody wallet. Especially if there is a chance it will drive customers to your site!

In the GAM3 Awards of 2022, multiple web3 games and content creators were elected by the community as the best projects in one or more categories. The winners will share funds from a 1,000,000 prize pool. This is possible thanks to contributions, services & grants partners like Immutable X and Blockchain Game Alliance. Polkastarter Gaming organized the whole event.

More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Voting stats from GAM3 Awards 2022
Voting stats from GAM3 Awards 2022

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

The year of blockchain gaming releases is in full swing now with games like Stepn, Riot Racers, and Crypto Unicorns launching their games. But, we also begin to see some fallout from the depressed crypto market, and the increased competition for keeping the attention of the blockchain gaming community.

Riot Racers

Riot Racers Breeding Banner

Having just released their breeding and rental system, Riot Racers has already been forced to respond to the huge increase in players. They’ve boosted their server capacity, increased the number of races being generated, and even increased the payouts for races! Expect the userbase for this game continue to grow as guilds and scholarships get settled in. And they still have a number of features such as visual races and mechanic shops to implement.

Riot Racers is the most recent game to join what is a rather small selection of free-to-play, play-to-earn games.

Otherside

Otherside banner

Though we know almost nothing about the game, their initial land sale brought the Ethereum network to its knees. And though we haven’t been promised any updates, I would expect to get more info as the month progresses. The secondary trading volume of Otherdeeds (land plots in Otherside) is already at the top of the charts on Open Sea!

Crypto Unicorns

crypto unicorns logo artwork

The long-awaited day has finally arrived. Breed, farm, and play Crypto Unicorns. Game launch. Players need a land plot and a unicorn. Includes crafting, trading, breeding, jousting, racing, and team battles.

Illuvium: Zero Land sale

Illuvium land banner

The land sale for Illuvium: Zero is near. And though we don’t know the date yet, we do know lots of details. Cheapest plots start at 2 ETH, with prices declining every minute.

Ties into Illuvium: Zero, a mobile, land management game. 20k plots for sale. Minted on IMX. Declining auction model. Tier plots start at 2 ETH. Tier 4 at 80 ETH, while Tier 5 will be live auctioned. Payable with ETH and sILV2.

Move to Earn Games

DEFY Move to earn

Stepn is getting big attention, Genopets should introduce staking soon and continue to expand their private beta, and DEFY has more NFT sales coming up.

Phantom Galaxies

Phantom Galaxies has already released two Episodes in its play-and-earn alpha playtest. Episode 3 will be released May 5th and the much-anticipated Planet sale on May should be around May 25th.

Sunflower Land

Sunflower Land

The newly reborn farming game Sunflower Land will launch its SFL token on the open market on May 9th. Let’s see how the game’s economy will work once in the wild world of the open market and how sustainable can the game be.

ev.io

Mint NFT skins on May 11th with whitelist tokens. Equip and play to earn SOL in this free-to-play, browser-based FPS. Whitelist holders receive a discounted price, so join the different challenges for your chance to get a spot on their WL. Read our ev.io review here.

Splinterlands

Splinterlands is expected to have the first sale for the SPS Validator licenses within the next few weeks. With the SPS airdrop ending in less than 3 months, validators will become one of the main sources of earning SPS tokens going forward.

Onesuss Titles

Onessus banner - delayed

Onesuss is forced to reduce their dev team and temporarily shut down their HodlGod servers. They now pivot to new AI-controlled spectator game, called Project Venom.

Last week we introduced you to ev.io, a free-to-play, browser-based FPS game running on Solana. Since then, we partnered up with the ev.io team to get our community whitelist tokens for their upcoming NFT mint coming May 11th. Here is how to join the challenge!

Starting today at 1 pm EST, you can access play ev.io via our special link and earn whitelist tokens for their upcoming NFT mint. To get your whitelist spot, you will need to play the game and find the tokens that will be spawning in the ev.io maps. 10 legendary and 100 epic tokens will be up for grabs for the players. Legendary tokens will drop in Team Deathmatch mode and epic tokens in Deathmatch.

Kill the boss to get an Epic token

Epic tokens will spawn in the maps as tokens and you will just need to grab them. Getting an epic token will be a bit more difficult. A boss will appear and you will need to kill it to get the token. If multiple players deal damage to the boss, the player who dealt the more damage will get the token.

The whitelist tokens allow you to mint NFTs on May 11th at fractal.is/ev. Later, you will be able to equip your NFT skins and start earning SOL just by playing! The NFT mint price for whitelist token holders will be 0.6 SOL for the epics and 1 SOL for the legendaries. During the public sale, the same NFTs will be sold for 1.5 SOL! Holding a whitelist token will guarantee you the mint of the NFT during the whitelist sale period.

So get yourself ready, and show your FPS skills in ev.io. To join the challenge, simply click this link, connect your Phantom or Fractal wallet and start playing!

UPDATE: All tokens have been found, great job guys! You can keep playing and practice for the Fractal Tournament (details below)

The team developing EV did a great job at developing and launching a game that is fun to play and accessible to anyone. The game is developed by the Addicting Games studio which has a lot of experience in developing fun to play casual games. This game-first approach already attracted a lot of players to the game. The team doesn’t rely on NFT or token sales to fund their project which is quite refreshing in the blockchain gaming space. The easy onboarding experience is great to attract new players and follows the same model as Mini Royale that we introduced you to a couple of weeks ago.

EV might not become the most profitable NFT game but is for sure a great project in the now more and more popular category of play-and-earn games.
