May Mayhem

Town Star relaunches their game on a new game engine called Godot. They will also be adding new content and holding weekly competitions throughout the month. Players can earn rewards by playing in May, with larger rewards for those who place at the top of the competitions.

Champions Arena has an ongoing playtest that extends into May. They have also said to expect the first ever Champions Arena NFT sale sometime this month.

GRIT, an FPS with a western theme plans to open up on a 24/7 basis for everyone with a Gala Games account. This is a huge leap forward for a game that until now, has only been open for a couple of hours a week.

Echoes of Empire just closed their five day playtest, but the team has hinted that there will be some ‘extra special excitement’ in May for EoE. Hopefully it will be a new playtest or beta announcement rather than another sale!

Mirandus will bring us another playtest in May with more goblin killing, and a huge bounty for whoever gets the first kill on their new Boss creature.

Superior should open up as free to play for everyone in May. And Legends Reborn which is already in an open playtest, promises to bring special competitions for venue owners in the coming weeks.

Gala Games also mentions two mobile games that should connect to the web3 world soon – Meow Match and Dragon Strike. These both came from their acquisition of the mobile developer Ember Entertainment earlier this year.

What is Gala Games?

Another title from the Gala portfolio, Echoes of Empire, announces a new playtest in April as they prepare for their official beta launch later this year.

Scheduled for April 19th through April 24th, this upcoming playtest will only be open to those who own Celestial Claim NFTs. Celestial Claims are an important part of the game, as they allow players to establish mines and harvest resources. Celestial Claim owners can also rent out their mines to other players. Currently, NFTs for Echoes of Empire are only available on secondary markets.

This playtest will give players the first look at game combat as well as claimable point of interest (POI). The user interface should see also an improvement with additional notifications and tooltips.

There will be other playtests before the beta launch later this year, but we don’t have any information about those yet. Expect that any resources of progress earned during these playtests will be wiped before beta.

Echoes of Empire Beta

And, somewhat surprisingly, the Echoes of Empire team also offered up a specific date for their beta release (they must have a pretty confident project manager!) Slated for October 3rd, 2023, the Echoes of Empire beta will be available to the general public.

Though there will continue to be improvements and feature additions after the beta launch, this should be a milestone for Echoes of Empire, showcasing all of the game foundations and with in-game economy and all of the primary features in a functional state.

The first sale for NFT ships should occur before the beta launch.

What is Echoes of Empire?

The Echoes of Empire is a sci-fi, 4x, MMO strategy game. Players take the part of an aristocratic family and work to build up their empire. Starting with a small space station, players pledge their allegiance to a faction and try to leave their mark upon the galaxy. Players can send their ships on missions and quests to earn rewards. They can also join guilds to combat enemies and gather resources scattered across the universe. 

Aside from the usual exploration and building of spaceships, players will also claim land and expand their influence, fight space pirates, and upgrade their base. Players can even claim Royal Peerage and announce their intent to rule over a section of space!

Players upgrade warships, repair fleets, and craft new weapons at the Command Station. Ships and bases can be improved and leveled up. In addition, players own in-game assets through NFTs. Echoes of Empire is part of the Gala Games ecosystem.

I’m declaring April the Month of Mobile for web3 gaming! As always, the space is changing rapidly. And while AI is the current hot buzzword, mobile is the major impetus behind much of the current development. Mobile games also could be the gateway for a flood of new players to get involved with the blockchain space.

I expect to see a number of new mobile, web3-enabled games launched over the coming months. And if they have any sort of success at all, they will attract a growing crowd of developers to the scene. We have mints, alphas, and pre-registrations from mobile focused games such as Hunters On-Chain, Blast Royale, WAGMI Defense and Rogue Nation. Meanwhile, Gods Unchained is still smoothing out the rough edges of their mobile app and Gala Games works on bringing their newly acquired suite of mobile games into the blockchain space!

Now of course, not all games will be playable on mobile devices. But casual gaming is a huge market. One that many web3 developers are eager to acquire!

Hunters On-Chain

Despite only being available on a testnet, Hunters on-Chain has continued to hold onto a spot in the top 10 most played games for the past three weeks! With their T1 Genesis Hunter Chest sale complete, look for Hunters to push for a release soon. They also recently announced that they plan on releasing mobile versions first. Rumors have it that downloads are already available for early testers!

Hunters On-Chain is free to play. If you want to get started by playing on the testnet, you can just ask on their Discord and they will provide you with a common Hunter to use. This Hunter will also transfer over to mainnet once the game launches.

Mocaverse

Mocaverse held their first PFP mint and also implemented an experience system for their new NFTs in March. Part of Animoca Brands, expect Mocaverse to continue to find ways to bring value to their Moca NFTs. It’s rare to see a PFP collection provide utility for their NFTs so quickly out of the box. But this show of speed bodes well for the future of this collection. And since Animoca seems to have their hands in half of the web3 gaming space, this feels like a space to keep an eye on.

Voxie Tactics

The Dragonfest event kicks off in April bringing a new PvE challenge, a new Drako class, and plenty more. Voxie Tactics has also introduced and released a number of updates for their crafting / forging system. The strategy genre is very under-served in web3 gaming. Voxie Tactics already has a solid foothold. If they can continue to build on their game with additional activities, events, and UI improvements, this free to play, play and earn, fantasy-based tactical game should be around for quite some time!

Splinterlands

Recent adjustments in Splinterlands to counter bots has resulted in a significant decrease in active players for this trading card game. Now presumably, most of those were bots, so we’re not seeing a major outflux of real-life players. But the imminent release of the first phases of land gameplay (surveying should open in early April), will be a good litmus test to see how many active landowners are around.

Echoes of Empire

Echoes of Empire announced their plans to release a beta in October of 2023, and also run a playtest in April. The strategy gaming market is surprisingly thin in web3 gaming. So there is still plenty of opportunity to claim a lead role.

This Echoes of Empires playtest runs from April 19th to April 24th. This round will only be open to those holding Celestial Claim NFTs. Unfortunately, I don’t own on, so I’ll have to just get my info about the game secondhand. But I do look forward to seeing what they have to show!

The alpha for Echoes of Empires begins on December 15th at 12pm PST and runs for seven days, through December 22nd. Alas, this is not an open playtest. Participants must own a Celestial Claim. Celestial Claims will allow owners to build mines for harvesting resources or leasing to other players. But for this playtest, they only provide access to the game. In-game functionality for these NFTs will come later.

Players will get a chance to upgrade their base, build ships, and venture out into the galaxy, exploring and claiming star systems as their own.

Alpha players must first complete the introductory quests before they can begin exploration. Completing these quests explains the basic concepts of base construction, resource gathering, and ship production, while also providing the player with a ship and some basic resources to get started. Players will also be able to engage with daily quests in this alpha

Alpha players can receive an exclusive Discord role. Visit the Echoes of Empire Discord for details on how to apply for the role. It’s unclear if this role actually does anything, or whether it is just for bragging rights. It may provide access to alpha only channels or provide early access at a later point, but we don’t have any official word on that.

Echoes of Empire has created an Alpha Starter Guide to help guide players as they start the game. The team is hoping that alpha participants report bugs and provide feedback on their game experience. Be sure to join their Discord server for reports and updates.

What are Ships in Echoes of Empire?

The Echoes of Empire game will allow players to build, upgrade and own fleets of ships to control their part of the galaxy. To protect their sectors, players need ships to destroy enemy players. The ships are primary tools in the world of Echoes of Empire and help players to compete in quests, expeditions, and PvP combat. All ships are unique and have different features. Based on the attributes and power of a ship, players must strategize and select the ships to send them out on missions.

The two types of ships available are Capital and Flagships. The Capital ships are the standard fleet-leading ship and have less power than Flagships but are cheaper to manufacture. 

Capital ships come in common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary rarities. On the other hand, Flagships are more powerful, so they don’t have a common rarity due to their superiority. The Flagships have advantages over Capital ships as they have a Flagship only module and can be traded via in-game auctions. As you already know, Flagship is a premium ship, so its cost is higher than Capital ships.

Classes and Stats of Ships

The ships are available in 12 different classes and are divided into factions. The three factions are Garrison, Royals, and Arbeiters. The different classes of ships under the Garrison faction are Commander Sniper, Specialist, and Iron Dreadnought: Ancient Flagship Only. Classes under the Royals faction are Archivist, Ambassador, Guardian, and Resplendent Empress: Ancient Flagship Only. Finally, under Arbeiters factions, the classes are Geologist, Surveyor, Machinist, and Hulking Terraformer: Ancient Flagship Only.

The stats of a ship define its strengths and weaknesses, and it depends on the faction that the ship belongs to. All types of ships under a particular faction have almost the same stats. The different stats are:

Discovery

• Movement
• Reconnaissance
• Diplomacy

Combat

• Defense
• Attack Power
• Agility

Collection

• Harvesting
• Storage
• Questing and Commerce

What are Construction Blueprints?

Construction Blueprints (CB) can be used to construct new ships, and each CB has its parameters. These CBs are required by players when all the ships have been destroyed, and a new ship is needed. Each CB can be used to manufacture a single ship at a time, and having multiple CBs give players the freedom the choose the parameters. CBs having one-time use limit are destroyed when the limit has been reached. 

The CBs can manufacture different Flagships such as Ancient Flagship, Origin Flagship, MK 2 Flagships, MK3 flagships, and MK4 flagships. Players can buy Construction Blueprints from the Gala Games store. Once a specific Flagship CB set has been sold, it will not be sold again in the future by Gala Games. 

Players can buy CBs for personal use and manufacture tradable flagships to auction them later. The utilities under each Flagship CBs vary, including manufacturing speed, tier-up material, inventory, unique model, personal manufacturing limit, and tradeable manufacturing limit.

The Flagship CBs can also be used to create Capital ship CBs and sell them at the same time via the in-game Auction House. These Capital ships will have more power as Flagship CB owners can select the rarity, tier, and level. Capital Ship CBs can also be manufactured using Capital Ships CBs, which can be obtained as in-game items from quests and daily missions. However, Capital Ship CBs have limited power and are destroyed once all the powers have been used.

Echoes of Empire is a free-to-play, sci-fi, multiplayer 4X strategy game. One of the most valuable assets in the game, Celestial Claims, allow players to mine basic and special resources. Basic resources include materials used for building, upgrading, and researching. The special resource is called Dust, and it will function as the primary game token for Echoes of Empire.

Dust is an ERC-20 token, integral to the game. Dust can be used to create rare blueprints, research ancient artifacts, upgrade Celestial Claims and more. With multiple use-cases and distribution gated by the number of active mines on Celestial Claims, Dust will be a valuable commodity.

Celestial Claims

The Claims for this sale are in three different clusters, with around 2,000 claims available per cluster. Players will need the funds in their Gala wallet in order to purchase. For this sale, purchases reserve a Claim spot. The actual choosing of Claims won’t happen until the land rush at a future, undecided date.

Each Claim allows a certain number of mines based on its rarity (see chart below). Higher rarity Claims also produce more Dust. Once the game starts, owners can either work the mines themselves or lease them out to other players. The starting price points for Claims are not yet revealed.

In an interesting, story-based twist, the clusters which have Claims available will change based on the community interactive story about Valentina Barbaro. As she visits clusters in the story, Claims will open up in the cluster. However, once she leaves, Claims are no longer for sale until she returns, at which point they will be at a higher price point!

What is Gala Games?

Gala Games is a blockchain gaming developer. While Town Star is the only game in their stable that’s live, they have many more in development including Mirandus, Echoes of Empire, and SpiderTank. They make some of the games in-house, others through third party developers. Gala Games functions as a publisher, developer, and blockchain gaming ecosystem.

After starting its life on the Ethereum mainnet, Gala has begun their expansion into a multi-chain environment. They have built a distributed node network and also plan on releasing their own network. Anyone with the money to spare and the willingness to run the software can purchase a node and earn rewards for helping to maintain the system.

At the center of the current ecosystem lies Gala Games’ own GALA token. Allow your digital self to be drawn into outer space, where the infinite vastness is limited only by the depths of your imagination. There, silence speaks louder than thunder and every brave visitor floats not only on the brink of endless oblivion, but on the brink of madness itself. In a dark corner of this desolate cosmic sea sits a small mining planet called Lina Minor, around which orbits an even smaller station named IO – Segura7. As an installment of Intersystem Organization (IO), Segura7 is home to a permanent crew of 25 and provides trading resources, travel accommodations and occasional temporary hazardous waste storage.

As a new recruit to the Segura7 crew, your small shuttle arrives to a much darker and quieter reception than you expect. The live-in crew of the space station (which is running on emergency backup power) is nowhere to be found, and a distress call is blaring over speakers throughout the station’s empty halls. A lump forms in your throat and sweat beads your brow as you recall the vicious enemy that seems to have already arrived at Segura7. The Spore is a relentless interstellar fungus notorious for its ability to locate technology and lifeforms, consuming them all to grow and spread. If it has already begun to infect this station, that means the planet of Lina Minor is next. Your home.

You already know that loaded in the cargo port of the S1A – Zofia Corvette (the only docked ship on the station) is a crucial resource now desperately needed by the people of Lina Minor in their fight against the Spore. A thousand questions are running through your mind as you hurry to the distress monitor inside the Zofia Corvette and activate the screen, on which you promptly see a highly decorated commander with terror in his eyes and urgency in his voice. Your training tells you this could only be Herzog David Haas, IO Commander First Class. You timidly activate the commlink and await the Commander’s orders.
