Colonize Mars prepares to launch their first closed beta in early December. Applications are open through December 2nd. The Colonize Mars closed beta gives players a chance to get a first look at the game and also provide their opinions and feedback to the dev team.

Signups for the upcoming Colonize Mars closed beta are open now through December 2nd. The beta launches on December 6th and runs through early 2023. Players accepted to the beta should see invite emails starting on December 6th.

This is the first chance for players to see the actual gameplay for Colonize Mars.Up until now, Colonize Mars has been mostly a stake and earn game, though they did add a little Mars rover mini-game a while back. But, the ultimate plan has been to create a game simulation of building, maintaining, and running a colony on Mars.

During the Closed Beta, players can use all of the Colonize Mars items they own for testing. This includes NFTS, MARTIA tokens, and all of the special resources such as Food, Oxygen, and Fuel.

Colonize Mars resource chain
Resources in Colonize Mars

In Colonize Mars, NFTs need resources to work, creating a base demand layer for each of the Resources. Building a colony takes a lot of effort. Players will have to decide when to work together and when to look out for themselves. There can also be division within the colony, with players working on multiple projects and competing for limited resources. The Colony will have to balance new buildings with maintenance and shipping cargo in from Earth. They will also face hazards such as dust storms, that can damage and incapacitate equipment.

We don’t know exactly how much gameplay this initial beta will have. But since the team already plans to run it through early 2023, I imagine we will see updates and features added throughout the beta.

The beta will be on WAX mainnet, so no need to set up a test wallet or jump through any hoops. However everything produced during the beta will be test resources only. They can’t be withdrawn from the game and they will all be wiped before the game launch. Once the game launches, everyone will start at the same point.

What is Colonize Mars?

Colonize Mars is a strategic, colony simulation game built on the Wax blockchain. Players use their NFTs to aid in colony development and eventually create land expansions and build player-owned hubs. Players stake cards and maintain them at regular intervals to receive Martia tokens as rewards in the first Phase. Later phases will include expansion, expeditions, and discovery. The game also features Ownership cards, which earn passive income.

Colonize Mars has already released four sets of cards. Mission Four crates are only available in the game store, though they can be purchased with both WAX and Martia tokens.

Colonize Mars added a thematic mini-game to their site. This game sees players driving a rover across the Martian landscape in search of resources. The game has a Minesweeper feel to it, with players only having limited moves to try and find hidden resources. The closed beta stats soon and runs through early 2023.

Like the temperatures outside for much of the northern hemisphere, the summer of blockchain gaming continues to heat up. August brings us several new playable betas and alphas. Enough to keep any avid gamer busy!

I am continually amazed by the increased sophistication in blockchain gaming. Though stake-and-click style games are still plentiful, they are forced to offer increasingly meaningful gameplay in order to stay relevant. And the focus on making a quick buck has shifted as well. More companies are beginning to use the terms ‘play and earn’ rather than ‘play to earn’. This is an important philosophical change that will help web3 gaming mature and become more about ownership in gaming and trying new ideas rather than ROI.

But anyway, enough rambling from me. On to August!

Colonize Mars Mission 4 Sale

Colonize Mars NFT pools

Colonize Mars launches its Mission 4 sale sometime this month. This sale is interesting in that it works via a card pool system, allowing players to buy as few, or as many cards at a time as they want. There will be four pools, each with different types of NFTs available. Prices increase as players buy cards, then decrease as the team adds more cards to the pool.

This is an intriguing idea, and it’s exciting to see something new. This should help provide value to MARTIA, the game token, as players can only buy from the card pool with MARTIA tokens. So, there should eventually be a balance between the card pools, external markets, MARTIA tokens, and WAX tokens. This will be an interesting process to watch!

In the Spring of 2022, Colonize Mars introduced new staking pools to their game. These pools allowed players to stake Martia tokens and receive some of the basic resources for the Mars colony. Since then, these pools have expanded to generate no less than sixteen different resources! But that system will be thrown out in July with a new economy. In addition, we’ll see sales for Mission Four NFTs open in July as well, with players purchasing cards from NFT pools.

Though it began as an idle clicking and staking game, Colonize Mars is ready to elevate its Mars settlement building game project to a new level. With complex, interconnected production chains, a gamified, cooperative building simulation, and new NFT pools that hold cards for purchase, the world of Mars will see some major shakeups and force players to adjust the way they play the game.

New Resource Production Chain

Colonize Mars resource chain

The passive staking system was always meant to be temporary. And Colonize Mars is just about ready to implement a full-on production chain. Every NFT will have its own production values and a cost associated with producing the resources. For example, an Ice Mining Rig uses Power and produces Water. While Civil Engineers need Water, well-being, Food, and Oxygen in exchange for producing Construction Materials and Engineer Labor.

As long as your NFTs have their needs met, every hour, they produce resources and Martia tokens for you. Resource production is also affected by the health of the NFTs. If a card is “damaged” due to a hazard event, then its output will be reduced by an equivalent percentage. These rewards are all in shared pools. So those pools with more participants will see less payout per player. Card rarity affects your pool share as well.

This change brings a real economy to Colonize Mars and forces players to find complementary cards in order to make best use of their NFTs. It actually requires some strategy instead of just dumping everything into staking and collecting tokens every once in a while, which is a nice change. Also, all Colonize Mars resources exist as tokens on the WAX blockchain, so they can be purchased and sold outside of the game.

And with this new production chain comes the next phase of colony development. Players contribute Data to research pools, both to help the Colony but also in the hopes of receiving a payout in the form of Discovery NFTs. Cargo ships use Fuel to travel back to Earth and return with supplies. And building Colony structures requires many resources, with contributions from many players.

Mission Four

Colonize Mars NFT pools
Colonize Mars NFT Pools

Mission Four cards don’t come in the standard crates. Instead, players buy cards from card pools. There are four pools in all, each with different odds for finding carious card rarities. All cards for Mission Four, including Ownership, Sponsorship, and the new ultra-rare Solar Flare cards, will come out of random draws from these pools. Players may purchase multiple cards at once, or one at a time. Cards are revealed as soon as they are bought. Purchases from the higher rarity pools will cost more, but we don’t know the final prices yet

As players buy cards from the pools, the price for cards increases. But then, once cards are added to the pool, the prices drop again. This creates a fluid pricing model to match the supply and demand for Colonize Mars NFTs. This also allows the team to simply drop new cards into the pool, rather than creating a new sale for each Mission.

Mission four is spaced out into four, separate drops, each with a different theme. Drop one is construction, drop two is infrastructure, three is geology, and four is security. Mission Four also introduces a new card rarity, Solar Flare. These are rarer than Dark Matter cards and carry more weight when harvesting resources. Mission Four NFTs should arrive in July.

Though only offered in exchange for Martia token, the Colonize Mars Mission Three pack sale sold out quickly. Following up on that, the Colonize Mars team now reveals details about their upcoming staking system for their Martia token. This system allows players to stake Martia in exchange to earn more tokens, in-game resources, and even NFTs!

After completing three successful pack sales, Colonize Mars is ready to move on to the next phase of its gameplay by implementing a staking system for its native token, Martia. But this is more than just a simple stake token to earn token type of setup. Though that option is available. But in addition to that, players have six other staking pools to choose from. Each one offering different rewards.

Colonize Mars staking UI
stake tokens for water, food, and other resources

The first is the standard staking pool you might expect from any token. Stake Martia tokens and earn more Martia tokens in return. But after that things get interesting.

Most of the pools earn various game resources needed by the Colony — Water, Food, Oxygen, Wellbeing, and Power. These resource pools function like token pools. The more Martia staked, the less the payout per Martia. This encourages a relatively even spacing of staked tokens. Though depending on how each is used in-game, some may still end up being more valuable than others.

And while there is no current usage for these game resources, the devs are targeting mid-year of 2022 for the first release of their resource features.

Then the final pool. This one rewards stakers with NFTs! NFT rewards function a little differently. Every hour, five random winners are selected from the pool. The interface will show an estimated chance of winning an NFT. The amount of Martia staked and the length of the lockup period chosen affects your odds. Initial NFTs are leftovers from the Mission One craft event, and may even include Ownership cards! More NFTs, including new types, will be added to the pool as needed.

More About Staking Martia

Players choose a lockup period when staking. This can be from 1 to 6 months, in 1 month increments. Each additional month locked beyond the first earns an additional 20% stake weight, all the way up to 2x for a 6 month lockup! Players can also join as pools more than once. Each stake will have its own lockup period.

On top of the regular staking rewards, the team is also considering special rewards for the top stakers in each pool. This could include whitelist spots for future sales, entry for closed beta tests, or early access to new features. The staking pools are expected to open in February of 2022.

Colonize Mars recently announced that players will need Martia tokens to buy the next supply packs. The Mission Three supply pack sale will take place on the upcoming in-game marketplace and contain entirely new NFTs. The team also announced the introduction of Hazards, which will encourage players to continually check on their assets to keep earning Martia. In addition they announced Resources, allowing players to build decks for maximum output.

Wax-based Colonize Mars is an economic strategy game in which players will work together to build a self-sustaining colony on Mars. Every building, person, vehicle, or machine is an NFT and players need those to start playing.

The current state of the game allows users to log in and allocate their base NFTs to ownership NFTs in order to generate Martia (check out this post for the difference between the NFT categories). Once allocated, players will passively generate Martia based on the rarity and type of their cards.

All you can do right now is logging in to see how many Martia tokens you’ve generated. Players can claim them at any time and there is no penalty for doing so, nor is there a benefit to leaving them in a claimable status.

As evident by the activity on Alcor before the latest announcement, plenty of people were just dumping their coins. The price dropped consistently after launch, which is entirely sensible considering there was no in-game utility for them and sparse information about near-term usage.

That all changed with the team’s latest announcement that contained important details about future uses for Martia and the direction of the game in general. Let’s go through both near-term and long-term uses for Martia that we now know a bit more about.

Ways to use Martia in Colonize Mars

A new in-game store will launch in December 2021, and this store will exclusively use Martia to facilitate transactions. Selling Mission Three Supply Packs is the only purpose for the in-game store at launch. However, it’s easy to imagine they may integrate common features such as NFT markets and other types of asset sales. Keep in mind, this is a glass ball prediction, and speculation at best.

Early 2022 will see the introduction of hazards and resources. These updates will build upon the foundation by adding a Martia burn mechanism and introducing strategy when building your collection.

Hazards will burn your Martia

Hazards will randomly occur throughout the colony, such as dust storms, asteroids, and volcanic activity. These hazards will affect both Ownership NFTs and Base NFTs by reducing their payouts. Base cards even have the potential to deactivate when taking too much damage.

Players must repair both types of cards. Players will pay Martia to repair their NFTs. More importantly, Martia spent on repairs will be burnt. Burn mechanisms are important to reduce a supply and create scarcity. It’s great to see one introduced so early.

Of course, the secondary purpose is to encourage players to check on the colony regularly to ensure they don’t need to repair anything. Ownership holders will risk losing stakers, while base cards could stop earning entirely.

Resources add new depth to collection building

The introduction of resources is the second update to expect early next year. The update will define the specific roles of the NFTs that we’ve all been collecting.

NFTs will have specialty uses throughout the colony that will generate resources. The specific example they give is an Ice Mining Rig consuming power and producing water. You can imagine the various resources that might come into play when a specific NFT generates them. Each of those resources will play a role in future developments.

Where’s the depth? You’ll need to intentionally build your collection to provide boosts to Martia generation, experience gain, and other unknown bonuses. There’s no further information about this, but clearly, the mechanism is intended to create an element of strategy to which cards you buy.

The goal of the current phase of Colonize Mars is to become a self-sustaining colony. At that point, additional elements will be introduced including land ownership, construction, and exploration. Resources will undoubtedly be heavily involved in upcoming updates.

What is Colonize Mars?

Players use their NFTs to aid in colony development and eventually create land expansions and build player-owned hubs. Colonize Mars reached a major roadmap milestone this weekend by launching its web-based platform that allows players to generate Martia token rewards with their NFTs. Despite a day delay and predictable server load issues, the launch allows players to explore the new game and assign their NFTs to ownership cards This way players can start earning Martia Tokens, the project’s in-game currency.

Colonize Mars is a relatively new project that has previously held two popular pack sales and introduced a rarity upgrade system. At the time, there wasn’t anything to do with the NFTs besides admiring the graphics. That all changed this weekend – players can now “stake” (it’s not technically staking, more on this later) them to generate Martia Tokens using the online platform available at Mars.cards

The launch of the new web-based platform was not without issues. The developers initially delayed the launch by one day, with the given reason that they found a bug. The project launched the next day and the community flooded the website, causing issues for most people. However, within an hour or two things were running pretty well and all of my NFTs were earning Martia Tokens.

In the small amount of time since the launch, the team removed a few notable features, presumably for further testing. The most detrimental was the lack of an ongoing Martia balance, along with removing the “claim” button (which never worked for me). I expect that the developers will add these features again soon enough.

It’s worth noting that they consider this release as the Phase 2: Establishment (Beta), and its mainly intended to release the platform and generate tokens. The project’s roadmap states the full release of Phase 2 will come in early 2022.

Now let’s dive into everything you need to know about Colonize Mars to start generating tokens in anticipation of future releases.

Base Cards vs Ownership Cards

As I was lurking the Colonize Mars Discord server during the launch, there was plenty of confusion about base cards and ownership cards. Let’s start by clarifying these two types of cards.

Base cards are most of the NFTs in the game. They represent buildings, infrastructure, tools, power generators, researchers, astronauts, and essentially everything else. Players are required to have base cards to play the game, with the higher rarity cards generating increased rewards. Base cards are used by staking them to ownership cards.

Ownership cards are unique, expensive and the rarest cards in the game. They are the same types of objects as base cards (such as a rover) but match 1:1 with a piece of equipment that you’ll find on the map. Players stake their base cards to the ownership cards to earn Martia, but the player with the Ownership cards earns a fee (set by the owner) for everything players generate. You can consider ownership cards similar to “land” cards in other play-to-earn games.

When a player assigns a base card to an ownership card, all of that player’s base cards of that same type automatically join the assignment. You cannot split cards of the same type between ownership cards – it’s all or nothing. For example, when players assign a cargo ship card to the selected cargo ship ownership card, all cargo ship cards will join.

Now, let’s talk about the use of the term staking. Staking typically means removing the NFT from your wallet and locking it somewhere else (such as R-Planet). That is not what happens with Colonize Mars – the NFTs are not going anywhere. Instead, they remain in your wallet while still generating Martia tokens. Even so, the devs and community tend to call this staking, but it’s worth clarifying that your NFTs are not going to leave your wallet.

How Do You Earn MARTIA Tokens?

Martia Tokens are the in-game currency for Colonize Mars and will be used heavily as more gameplay is added. At present, earning the Martia token is the entire point of the gameplay release.

You can earn Martia tokens by staking them to the ownership cards as discussed above. The amount that you earn is based on the type of card (such as a rover instead of a cargo ship), the rarity of that card, and the fee charged by the ownership card that you stake it to.

Rarity is directly put to use in Colonize Mars by impacting the strength of your collection, which is indicative of how much Martia the NFT will generate. The above readout on the “Profile” page directly showcases the rarity strength of each card. A Dark Matter card generates more than three Epic cards, for example.

The rarity-based card strength system directly supports the rarity upgrading system introduced earlier this year. For example, it takes six common cards to upgrade to an uncommon card. That one uncommon card has 6.5 strength, which is 0.5 strength more than what you had with six common cards. The gains increase as you upgrade, creating continued motivation to buy and burn cards in pursuit of the strongest collection possible.

Right now you can only earn MARTIA tokens, that’s it. But there’s a reason for introducing this feature first. In the next update, which you can see on the project’s roadmap, the team will add resources to the game. Players can generate these instead of or in addition to tokens. These resources can be used to “power up” your existing cards, and undoubtedly there will be plenty of other features in the future.

What About the Colonize Mars Interface?

Everything that we’ve discussed so far could’ve been accomplished with a pretty simple menu. However, the dev team called this a gameplay release, not a “pretty simple menu” release. When a player logs in, they immediately arrive at the beautiful Colony Map. Take it in:

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is colony_map.PNG

Honestly, there’s not much to do on the map at this point. At launch, you could click on the objects and see the ownership NFT that it corresponds with, but that feature is not available at the time of this writing. There’s no tangible benefit right now to having that information anyway.

You can stake through the “Earn” menu, and that’s where you’ll be spending all your time right now. However, the presence of a robust and persistent colony map with pretty impressive graphics is encouraging. The upcoming steps in the roadmap discuss putting the map to actual use.

The web-based platform is all mobile-first, meaning you’ll be able to play this game on-the-go as features roll out. Even during this launch, I regularly checked the mobile site and it was perfectly fine.

Ultimately, the launch was a success (despite a few hurdles) and it’s exciting to see this project hit a major milestone in an industry filled with delays. I’m looking forward to future releases that expand on the team’s vision. Right now, it’s time to collect and upgrade NFTs in pursuit of generating as much Martia as you can!

Colonize Mars announced details about their second pack sale and upcoming changes to the blending and upgrade system. Both will be released in early July. Colonize Mars is a collectible card staking and building game on the WAX blockchain.

Colonize Mars received some criticism after their first sale when they sold over 47,000 crates in an open free-for-all. But in the long-term, that criticism does not seem to have reduced interest in the game as they prepare for their Mission Two Supply Crate sale!

This time around, the developers will make a limited number of packs available for sale. And they’ve added a pre-sale whitelist to give those holding Colonize Mars NFTs first chance at picking up crates. Existing Colonize Mars NFT holders (as of the snapshot, which was taken on June 26th, 4pm UTC), have been added to up to two whitelists, one for the Ultimate Supply Crate, the second for a Standard Supply Crate.

Mission Two whitelist tickets

Whitelist tickets have already been distributed and cannot be transferred. The developers didn’t reveal the requirements beforehand. The ultimate crate whitelist requirement was owning at least 1 Legendary (Dark Matter) Mission One card while the standard crate whitelist required at least 1 Common (Standard) Mission One card.

Each whitelist gets a chance to purchase one of the related Supply Crates before the open sale begins. The Ultimate Whitelist pre-sale will be on July 7th, between 4pm – 5pm UTC. The Standard Whitelist pre-sale will occur on July 7th, 5pm – 6pm UTC. The developers will add any unsold crates from the pre-sales to the open sales, which begin immediately afterwards.

Colonize Mars Mission Two Supply Crate sale

Ownership cards are the rarest find. Each is one-of-a-kind, and provides the holders with major in-game benefits. For this sale, players can’t craft these cards. Instead they need to find these ownership cards in the different supply crates.

Anyone holding a Sketch level card from the Mission One set at the snapshot on June 30th, 4pm UTC (note: the card must be in your wallet and not on auction), will get a special Dark Matter Mission Two crate. Holders of the Sketch cards will receive an exclusive patch which they can use for Dark Matter crate distribution and possibly other rewards. Crafting new Sketch cards won’t be available until the release of the new crafting system, but you can still pick some up on the secondary markets.

New Upgrade System

Pack opening and upgrading opens on July 9th, 4pm UTC. You will need several cards of the same type and rarity to attempt an upgrade. The new upgrade system allows for chances of Failures and Critical Successes. A Failure results in a loss of one of the cards and has a 20% chance of occurrence. A normal Success, where the four cards merge into one of higher rarity, will happen 79% of the time. And with the remaining 1% comes a chance for a Critical success, which yields two upgraded cards!
