The time has come for owners of Chicken Derby Chicken NFTs to put their unwanted Chickens into the Fusion machine! Combine two Chickens to create a new one, perhaps even one with a rare Mutation that gives it an advantage in certain races!

Not to be confused with Chicken Breeding (which is not yet available), Chicken Fusion is the process of burning two existing Chicken NFTs to create a completely new Chicken. Generally, these new Chickens will have the traits of the ‘Material Chickens’, but sometimes, rare mutations will crop up instead!

The Fusion machine opens later today, April 11th. And I expect to see a noticeable decline in the Chicken population as a result!

Chicken Fusing

Chicken Fusing requires two Chicken NFTs and at least one Fusion Serum NFT. Players combine the three NFTs to make a new Chicken! The new Chicken will be a hybrid of the two burned Chickens, with most of their traits selected randomly from the two sacrificed. With a couple of exceptions.

For one, players can choose to lock Traits when fusing. Traits are sorted into three groups, and players can only lock one Trait per group. This incurs an additional cost in Fusion Serums based on the rarity of the locked Traits.

Secondly, Consistency is always random, though players can choose that as a Trait to lock. In addition, Perfection is selected randomly from the range between the Perfection ratings of the two Fused Chickens. Example: Fusing a 90% and a 93%, could yield a 90%, 91%, 92% or 93% chicken, with each having the same 1/4 chance of appearing.

Distance Preferences are based on the Preferences of the Combined Chickens, with three new Preferences available in this generation — Intermediate, Stretch, and Extremes. And speaking of generations, Fused Chickens have a Generation rank of one higher than the highest of the ‘Material Chickens’. This means that all Fused Chickens will be second generation at lowest.

And while this is all pretty cool stuff, the best part are the Mutations! Though some players may want to Fuse Chickens in order to create a specific type of racer, most will be aiming to acquire one or more of the new Mutations available. There are eighteen Mutations in all. These range from translucent skin to button eyes to robot beaks and more! The chance of a Mutation is about 1 in 10. And it is possible for more than one Mutation to occur on the same Chicken! This Mutations not only change the Chicken’s appearance, but can also affect the race results!

If you want to learn more details about Chicken Fusion and Mutations, read the Fusion section of their whitepaper.

Fusion Serum Sale

The team held an initial airdrop of Fusion Serums to active players last week. They will also be holding a public sale for Fusion Serumd on April 12th, 7pm CST. This mint includes 47,050 Serum NFTs up for grabs, at a cost of 0.0033 WETH each (just over $6 USD at current values). No limit on the number of mints. The sale will be on the Polygon network and will only be open for 24 hours. Any NFTs left over will be available for future minting at a higher price point.

Interestingly, the Fusion feature will actually go live today, April 11th, a day before the Serum sale. This means that any player who already holds Serums will have a chance to get a jumpstart on trying to create the first mutated chickens!

If you’re looking to pick up Serums before the sale, they’re currently going for about $6 USD. Also, you have to look on Rarible, because these NFTs don’t display on Open Sea for some reason.

What is Chicken Derby?

Chicken Derby is a chicken racing simulation built on the Polygon network. Each Chicken is a unique NFT that can be entered into races for paid prizes.

Chickens come in four Heritages — Serama, Sultan, Lakenvelder, and Dorkling, in order of rarity. In addition, there are a number of random cosmetic traits for each Chicken. Ranging from standard white feathers to tiger patterns to robot chickens! Every Chicken also has a special Talent that can trigger during races. This can be something as simple as a short flight, or as extreme as creating a black hole!

Chickens have Perfection ratings, which affect their race performances. All of the original Spicy breed Chickens have a Perfection Rating of at least 90%. But it’s not always the 100% Perfection Chicken who wins the race. Each Chicken also has hidden preferences for track distance and type as well as a Consistency rating. Players must discover these hidden preferences on their own.

With seven different terrain types, six different track lengths, and twelve Chickens per race, each with their own preferences, abilities, and racing styles, Chicken Derby features enough variation to ensure that the race outcomes won’t be predetermined. There are also a number of ‘Easter Egg’ type bonuses that the team adds to the official documentation once the community figures it out. For example, Chickens with Alien Eyes get a boost to their Teleport ability (if they have it).

Chicken Derby also plans to build additional features such as breeding, a social hub, and land ownership.

Chicken Derby continues to develop their Chicken racing game by adding racing seasons. Seasons award special badges for the top finishers, and should help reduce the number of players who were gaming the system and racing high performing Chickens in lower Pecking Orders.

After recently adding equippable wearables to their game about racing Chickens with special powers, Chicken Derby looks to revamp their leaderboard calculations with the addition of Seasons, starting on December 19th.

Chicken Derby features five distinct groups of races — Chick, as well as Pecking Orders D, C, B, A, and S, with S boasting the toughest competition. Chick is also a special Pecking Order. available only to Chickens who have raced less than five times ever.

In the current ranking method, chickens move freely between the Pecking Orders based on their finishing position in races. This has led to a number of players gaming the system and purposefully de-ranking their Chickens with cheaper cost races so they can enter higher cost races at lower ranks.

Seasons in Chicken Derby

And so, to combat this behavior, Chicken Derby is implementing seasons. At the start of each Season, every Chicken has their POP (Pecking Order Points) set to 100. After each race, Chickens gain or lose POP based on their finishing position. This ranges from +5 to -5 points.

Then, at the end of the season, the top 20% from each Pecking Order receive a special season badge and move up a Pecking Order,. The bottom 20% move down a Pecking Order. Then all of the Chickens have their POP reset to 100 and the next season begins. Chickens must run at least one race during a season to be eligible to change Pecking Order.

As additional incentive, Chicken Derby will weight the payouts for free races so that higher ranked Pecking Orders have larger payouts.

The first five seasons will be only two weeks long, giving the team a chance to make changes and adjustments as needed. After that, starting in March 2023, seasons will run for a month.

In addition, Chicken Derby plans to launch a new ‘Christmas Cracker’ tournament. This tournament begins on December 19th, 6pm CST, and runs for two weeks. Chickens earn points based on placement for each race run during the tournament. After the two weeks, Chickens with the top 10 number of points in each Pecking Order receive special prizes including Santa costumes and Fusion Serums (Serums will be used in an upcoming Chicken Fusion feature).

No longer do your chickens have to race naked with the new implementation of wearables in Chicken Derby. Now those cute, racing, fowl can dress up in all sorts of costumes from pirates to witches and more! Chicken Derby wearables won’t affect the race outcome, but they will make your Chicken look cool!

Chicken Derby has been handing out wearable items for their Chicken racing game for many months. Now, players can finally put those items on their Chickens, and start racing in style!

Wearables for Chicken Derby are relatively limited items. Chicken Derby has not (yet) had a sale for wearables. Everything that you see in the marketplaces and on Chickens was acquired from a tournament or contest. In fact, there is currently an active contest right now (running through December 12th) that offers rewards to the top finishers including land plots, and a special, bacon hat (that will show those pigs who’s boss!)

Chickens can equip items in five slots — head, body, eyes, neck, and feet. Wearables have no effect on race results. These are cosmetic items only. Though it’s not inconceivable that future special events or tournaments may be restricted to Chickens wearing specific items.

The Chicken Derby team is also hoping to implement Seasons before the end of the month. And, sometime in early 2023, we should see the introduction of Chicken Fusion. Chicken Fusion will allow players to merge two Chickens into one, hopefully producing a stronger, better Chicken! We should learn more about this feature in the coming weeks.

Chicken Derby, the wacky chicken racing simulator, brings us a new Halloween event. And while past events were open to all chickens, this event is a little different. Only open to Chickens with offensive-based talents, the Halloween Hunt tournament offers NFT rewards and even cash (ETH) prizes to the top finishers!

Though still officially in beta, Chicken Derby already lets players race their Chickens and earn ETH rewards for top 3 placements. The Chicken Derby team has also hosted a series of tournaments, offering exclusive clothing NFTs as special rewards. Now they bring us a new tournament that includes both NFTs and ETH prizes!

Halloween Hunt Tournament

For this Chicken Derby event, known as the Halloween Hunt Tournament, only Chickens with specific traits can participate. Halloween Hunt races are limited to Chickens with the following abilities: Anvil, CK-47, Machete, Blue Egg, Helicopter, Cold Snap, Devolution, and Black Hole. This is a new tournament limitation that they are trying out to see how the playerbase responds. I haven’t seen too many complaints so far, though I imagine those who don’t own a Chicken with the requisite ability might be annoyed at being excluded. But, I guess this may also encourage players to maintain a stable of Chickens rather than just one or two prize winners.

Halloween Hunt races
Halloween Hunt races

Chickens score points for this event based on their finish in the Halloween races. This ranges from 13 points for first place, down to 1 point for last (8th) place. Chickens can only score points for their first 25 Halloween races. Race entry started on October 21st, and runs through November 4th, 6:59pm CST. Each league has its own leaderboard, with the top 10 Chickens in each league winning prizes. First place wins a share of the tournament fund, a Land NFT, a clothing NFT, and a Chicken Derby World Statue NFT. Second place finishers for the tournament receive Land, Clothing, and a Statue, while third place gets a Clothing and Statue NFT. Finally, the fourth through tenth place finishers each win a Halloween Clothing NFT.

The tournament fund is generated from 5% of ALL races during the Halloween tournament. Of that fund, 30% of the total goes to the first place finisher in the S League, 25% to A, 20% to B, 15% to C, and 10% to D.

In addition, any Chicken that runs 40 or more Halloween races will win a limited edition Halloween clothing piece, giving every participant a chance to win something.

Aside from the official tournaments, players have also been hosting their own tournaments. Keep an eye on the Chicken Derby Twitter for announcements about this events.

Chicken Derby first entered open beta back in March of 2022. And since then, thousands of chicken races have been run, with cash prizes at the end of every one. In addition, there have been several competitions that rewarded additional prizes. But something was missing from the races. Something… important. Well, now that piece is in place! And now, the Chickens of Chicken Derby are ready to utilize their Talents to gain an advantage in the races! Chicken racing as we know it is no more.

Passive racing games are not new to blockchain gaming. Zed Run has been around for quite a while. And we have more recent additions such as Pegaxy and Riot Racers. And while betting on your NFTs beating other NFTs in a simulated race can be fun, the replays left something to be desired. If you had a horse in the race (or car, or pegasus, or whatever), you would have some interest in the results. But watching the races was mostly uninteresting. Though at least Chicken Derby had some different animations when a racer would speed up or get tired.

Chicken Derby Talents

Chicken Derby talent screenshot
some Chickens have to cheat to win!

But Chicken Derby always had an ace up their sleeve in regards to making the races a more interesting spectator sport. And that was the Talents. Every Chicken in Chicken Derby has a special Talent. There are twenty Talents in all, each with its own effect. Some give the Chicken a boost and some slow down the other contestants. Talents have special animations, leaving no doubt as to what just happened.

Talents are now live in-game. They trigger randomly during races, though some Talents tend to trigger more often than others. Also, to avoid too much craziness, the number of Talents that can be used in each race is limited to the length of the race. 100M courses can have no more than two Talent triggers during the race, while 200M courses can have up to five. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit more craziness! Perhaps the team could add some alternate races with a significantly increased Talent limit? It could be fun!

The addition of Talents shakes up racing strategies significantly. Not only does this provide a bit more randomness to the race results, but supposedly, Talents can also be affected by the race conditions. What exactly this means is left up to the racers to discover!

What is Chicken Derby?

Chicken Derby is a chicken racing simulation built on the Polygon network. Each Chicken is a unique NFT that can be entered into races for paid prizes! The original, ‘Spicy’ stock of 33,333 Chickens sold out, though many are available on secondary markets.

We already have horse racing and car racing games on the blockchain. But to my knowledge, Chicken Derby is the first chicken racing game in the space! After a successful Closed Beta period, Chicken Derby now enters Open Beta. Anyone and everyone with a Chicken can race for paid prizes.

Open up your chicken coops as Chicken Derby launches into Open Beta. The basic racing game allows Chicken owners to enter the best of their flock into paid and free races. Every Chicken receives one free race in the ‘Chick’ Pecking Order class. After that, the game assigns the Chicken to a Pecking Order — A, B, or C. Chickens move up or down the Pecking Order based on their race results. There are occasionally free races for the non-Chick pecking orders, but they are not common and you have to be quick to sign up for them.

sample of Chicken Derby races
sample of Chicken Derby races

Every race, even the free ones, pay out to the top 3 finishers. Entry fees vary, from $2 to over $100, with the prize pots scaled accordingly. Chicken Derby doesn’t use any additional tokens. Entry fees and prize winnings are all paid in WETH (Wrapped Ether).

And since the game runs on Polygon, Chicken Derby subsidizes the gas costs for entering races. Players only need to pay the entry fee and sign a message when entering. Once the race is full, there is a short delay before it begins. Anyone can watch a graphic visualization of the race results. And though the races are pretty bare bones at the moment, expect more exciting visuals in the future as more features are added and Chickens start using their abilities.

Winnings pay out automatically at the end of every race. Race generation and running are also automatic. The team will take races offline every once in a while for a patch, but otherwise, races are available 24/7 for all Pecking Orders. Chickens can be purchased on Open Sea.
