But they have really chosen to launch it in style, giving a number of communities from other games chances to assemble teams of their finest warriors. Guilds, friend groups, and gatherings of random strangers are all are invited as well to attempt to be the first in the world to slay Old Sally! Some of the gaming communities are offering extra prizes and incentives for their players, so check around to find the right group for you.

The Old Sally Event

To defeat Old Sally, players must gather up in groups and set off into the sewers. None of the participants will have any sort of early access to Old Sally. Everyone will be starting this event off with the same lack of knowledge and will have to learn through trial and error! Servers for the event open on June 8th at 3pm CST. Old Sally won’t become available until 4pm, giving everyone a chance to get themselves and their team ready. Old Sally will be active until 7pm, with a one hour wind-down and social hour afterwards.

Champions Ascension announced today that they plan to migrate to the Polygon blockchain. This is a rather timely announcement as there has been a lot of discussion in crypto-circles about the recent rise in gas fees caused primarily due to the crazy trading volume around the PEPE token.

We don’t have any technical details yet. Though expect to see that information soon as this migration is expected to begin at the end of June! The Champions Ascension team has also stated that the migration will be a free and easy process for the players. There is no deadline for migrating, but there are hints that you will want to migrate sooner rather than later.

As an added bonus all Champions will receive a visual upgrade with the migration.

Chrono Imperium Obelisk

The world of Massina will see a new addition for those on Polygon. Known as the Chrono Imperium Obelisk, this feature rewards players who visit it daily with experience points.

Experience earned from the Obelisk feeds into a leveling system. There are 11 Tiers, ranging from Acolyte to Transcendent. The rewards from rising in ranks are not yet fully revealed, but we did get a little info. After reaching a certain tier players (known as Maestros in Champions Ascension), will receive a ‘drip’ of Gold tokens, the currency of the game. Also, the player who reaches the highest total experience points will be given the honor of naming the current Era of the game. This will be some sort of seasonal event and will likely continue to be expanded in the future.

When this feature is launched, players will receive retroactive bonuses for their NFTs when first interacting with the Obelisk. Players receive a one-time experience bonus for all the NFT characters in their wallet, with bigger bonuses for Prime Eternals. Length of time the NFTs have been held will also count towards the experience calculation.

Everyone will need to create a new Maestro account after migration. This account can be linked to multiple wallets for those who like to keep their NFTs spread out.

In addition, for those who can’t run the game client will offer a new cloud-streaming, browser-based option for playing. This is time limited however, with only five hours available to each player. Though the team says that they are looking into ways to continue to provide this service in the future.

Even a migration to a new blockchain doesn’t seem to be slowing these guys down. In addition to the in-game mini-games, we have three different types of arena combat, upcoming group PvE content, a dungeon master type experience in development, and the soon to be released Imperium leveling system!

There is always plenty of action in web3 gaming these days. And while we cover as many of the games as we can, here are a few in particular that may be worth watching in the coming month.

Mojo Melee

Mojo Melee enters open beta soon. During this beta, players will have an opportunity to play and earn their way onto the whitelist for an upcoming, free, NFT mint! This playtest will be completely free and provide a chance for participants to ‘play to mint’!

We don’t have an exact date for the beta to begin, but I expect it to be this month, hopefully within the next week or two!

MOBA Games

DOTA2, a MOBA style game, is the biggest eSport in the world. And really, this type of game seems a perfect fit for web3 gaming!

Spider Tanks has a first mover advantage when it comes to the world of web3, MOBA, eSport games. But they have yet to really take advantage of it. Perhaps their latest update will help propel them forward. But in the meantime, there are plenty of up and coming MOBA games.

Tearing Spaces is currently in closed beta, Wildcard and The Machines Arena are having ongoing playtests. The Harvest is making some game updates and should have a new playtest announcement for us soon. Just to name a few!

Influence

With Influence set to launch this summer, their final test and earn event should kick off sometime soon. These events let players accumulate SWAY tokens, the game currency, simply by logging on to the test network and completing a few actions in-game.

And though Farsite and Star Atlas are also building space-based MMOs, it looks like Influence will be the first to launch. With their detailed production system, interconnected economy, and the ability for player control of sections of the game universe, Influence looks set to become the web3 version of Eve Online. Add onto that a realistic simulation of orbital mechanics, and you have a very interesting game in the making!

Champions Ascension

Champions Ascension continues to march forward with their development. Soon there will be a group PvE game, and another sort of PvE game that features players trying to make it through levels designed by other players!

But in the meantime, we have a new style of arena combat known as the Vault of Carnage. This game mode sees 15 players face off in a free for all arena with traps, boosts, and environmental obstacles! In fact, if you want to give it a try, they are holding a special playtest, partnered with Fractal Gaming. This playtest opens on May 2nd, 5pm CST, is open to everyone (you don’t even need a wallet!), and will feature the Vault of Carnage. This event will only be open for an hour though. So don’t be late!

NFT Worlds

Though they aren’t quite ready for a full resurrection, a lot has been happening in NFT Worlds. In fact, this week they are re-issuing their world NFTs. Current World owners won’t need to do anything. Their new World will be airdropped into their wallet. For anyone considering purchasing a World NFT, I would suggest waiting until after the migration completes later this week.

This is part of their rebranding project which should fully kick in on May 5th. We don’t yet know the new, official name of this project, but it will be something that is not so web3-focused. They have also announced that they will be creating their own sidechain to help serve the players and world owners.

This steady stream of updates has caused the floor value of the NFT Worlds NFTs to double over the past few months!

No longer content with watching two warriors battle it out on the sands of the arena, the Emperor of Massina has declared a new type of contest. One where two teams meet in a vicious brawl until only one side remains standing!

Team Combat in the Arena

The arena map becomes more complex, with destructible fences, a spike trap in the center, and two types of power-ups available on the map! The first of these power-ups is a damage booster known as Crocaine (created from the teeth of Crocolisk). This power-up can be found at the center of the map, on top of the spike trap. Grabbing it provides the player with a 100% damage increase for 20 seconds!

The second type of power-up, Life Crystals, can be found hidden behind two of the pillars as well as outside of the fenced area. These heal the player for 50% of their maximum health. However, after five minutes, Life Crystals change into Crocaine. Just to make sure these battles don’t last forever.

Another addition with this update is the ability to lock-on to a specific target. Players can enable and disable target locking by pressing R3 on a controller, or F on the keyboard. Switching target locks involves pressing right and left on the directional pad for controllers, or tab on a keyboard.

Upcoming improvements to this new game mode include the ability to queue as a team and voice chat. And, of course, there will be ongoing tweaks and changes as the Champions team works on balancing arena combat.

For now, single combat is disabled in the arena as the team wants to test the 3v3 mode. The alpha is still free to play, and regular sessions are open two or three times a day from Thursday through Sunday every weekend!

The sign-up for this tournament is open now. There are only sixty-four slots available, but the Champions Ascension team is keeping a waitlist in case any competitors chicken out!

The team asks that you only sign up if you know that you will be available for both time slots. Round one runs on March 11th from 5-8pm UTC. This round features six rounds of a swiss style tournament, with the top eight competitors moving on to the final round. Round two runs from 5-8pm UTC on March 18th. This will be a single elimination tournament to crown the best Champion of the lands!

The winner of the tournament receives a Elemental Eternal NFT, with another Elemental Eternal raffled off among all of the participants. Players can track the tournament matchups and status on https://challonge.com/ once they’re posted.

Arena Combat in Champions Ascension

Grasping the basics of arena combat in Champions Ascension is pretty easy. But becoming a master takes patience and practice. Using a game controller helps as well!

Arena combat in Champions is a 3d, one versus one battle on the sands of the arena. Each champion has a number of different attacks and special abilities based on their body parts and traits. Players also have options for blocking, dodging, and charging, providing plenty of opportunities for different battle tactics.

At the moment, players must choose from a pre-selected group of heroes. But in the future players will be able to use their own individual Champions in the arena.

You can read the official combat guide here. The game also offers a practice mode to let you get used to the controls against a bot player. For those new to the arena combat, there will be a special arena bootcamp on Friday, March 3rd, run by Blitz7622.

Free to Play Alpha

Those who own a Prime or Champion NFT can use those as their avatar in-game (except in the arena), including all of their specific traits and appearances! Those who don’t own an NFT must use a default, generic, human avatar.

The pre-alpha currently includes arena combat as well as several mini-games. The mini-games range from mostly passive crab races to confusing and disorienting drunk racing to betting and bluffing dice games. This will be the second NFT mint for Champions Ascension. And this one is completely free!

This mint is for Elemental Eternals. Elemental Eternals are considered second only to Prime Eternals. In fact, the team has some sort of plans to make it to so that the Elemental Eternals are actually stronger than Primes in the PvE portions of the game.

Only 10,000 Elemental Eternals will ever be available. They come in four Essence types — Fire, Water, Earth, and Air — and are the only Characters that can have Sublime Parts. Other perks include boosts for farming and mining, the ability to breed, extra Essence earnings in battles, the ability to equip armor and weapons, and, immortality!

The first 1,000 Elementals will be minted by the team and used for future giveaways and promotions. After that, the Prime Claim opens on January 25th, 8am PST. Anyone who had a Prime in their wallet during the snapshot (taken back in December) is on this list and guaranteed a mint. Those on the Tier 1 whitelist can mint a day later and have a guaranteed 2 Elementals available for minting. However, the window for Tier 1 only lasts for one hour. After that, Tier 2 slot opens, though there are no guarantees for this mint. It will be first come first served. And finally, if any Elementals are left after Tier 2 closes, they become available to the public at 10am PST on January 26th.

Other News

In other Champions Ascension news, the game, and apparently the entire team, have moved to a new company called Plai Labs. It’s unclear what prompted this move, but if the team is indeed remaining intact then it should only be a minor bump in the road.

The team is currently working on updates to the battle arena including 3v3, free for all, and boss battles. Champions Ascension has also talked about moving to Polygon to lower game transaction fees. That’s still very much an in-development change and we don’t know how the process will work from the player’s perspective.

Champions Ascension continues to hold, regular game openings on the weekends, with patches to fix bugs, adjust combat balance, and add new features. These previews are open to everyone and players can earn tickets to spend on special NFTs that will have an in-game utility.

Even though many developers and companies are still easing into the new year, others are developing and releasing new alphas, previews, and announcements! Here are a few games to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

Gala Games

Not just one game, but this is an entire ecosystem to watch. Gala Games is already making a splash in 2023 with their recent acquisition of a mobile gaming company with the intent of onboarding all of their existing games onto the Gala ecosystem and upcoming Gala blockchain!

Gala Games has been criticized for starting and funding dozens of games but not delivering much. That has already started to change with the release of Superior, alphas for Legacy and Echoes of Empire, and now they just went out and outright bought a company that already has a number of existing games. We don’t have the full details on this purchase, but there should be a bigger announcement about this event soon as well as some talk about how Gala actually plans to begin incorporating this new suite of games into their ecosystem.

On top of this they also have their new Gala Music and Gala Film divisions. Gala Games will be one to watch throughout the entire year!

Mist Pre-Alpha

Mist now opens their pre-alpha to everyone! Even Mac players! They opened a closed alpha test for NFT holders about a month ago, and I guess the testing went smoothly enough that they are now ready to invite the general masses! Playtest opens on January 9th at 18:00 UTC. The download links should be revealed then. Watch their Twitter feed for more info.

Undead Blocks

Undead Blocks has already been hosting a steady stream of play to earn events. But now they kick things up a notch with the addition of co-op multiplayer! No longer must you face the hordes of undead alone. Now you can bring a friend for some co-op, zombie killing fun! The team has already announced their intentions to also add a 4-player mode. Already off to a great start for 2023, Undead Blocks looks to have claimed a long-term spot in the web3 ecosystem!

Axie land holders have been waiting a long time for this release, and initial reports are promising. With the additional recent major revamp of their game and economy, the Axie ecosystem seems to be thriving and growing.

But not everything is rosy in the web3 gaming world. Splinterlands was just recently forced to lay off 45% of their staff. And Star Atlas, suddenly finding half of their funding locked away, announces four different sales, some of which feel like a desperate attempt to acquire additional funding!

Mist Pre-Alpha

Players have been waiting a while for Mist to open up their next game preview. And, at long last, news of a pre-alpha arrives. But, alas, this pre-alpha is only open to those with a heavy investment in Mist — requiring ownership of either a Tier 3+ NFT, or 100 thousand MIST tokens. Everyone else will have to wait for a later alpha or beta to try out this fantasy RPG.

Colonize Mars Closed Beta

Colonize Mars is ready to test and preview their colony development game. This closed beta test will feature construction, resource management, and community decision making as the players try to make a life for themselves on the cold, red planet!

War Park Community Playtest

War Park, a historical, tank-based MOBA style game brings us their first ever community playtest. Though this version is expected to be a bit rough and potentially buggy, the War Park team promises some fun gameplay. And with the game featuring tanks shooting up a destructible environment, I think they have a good foundation to start from!

Star Atlas Sales

I have Star Atlas on this list not because of any upcoming alpha or beta, but because of their newly announced sales. Star Atlas lost access to approximately half of their development funds with the closure of FTX. And while there is hope that some of those funds may be returned, that likely won’t happen anytime soon. And so, Star Atlas announced not one, not two, but four upcoming sales. The biggest one (and currently active) is a ship sale that includes three Titan class ships, each one priced at $1 million dollars! And actually, they cost more now, as one week has passed and nobody purchased one. Which feels like a backwards pricing plan. If you couldn’t find a purchaser at 1 million, raising the price to 1.5 million doesn’t seem like the way to attract buyers.

Black Friday is nearly upon us. And though the insanity of massed crowds waiting for hours to rush a Walmart for a supposed deal on a TV have mostly passed, Champions Ascension is ready to bring us some of their own insanity! Specifically, in the form of another Pet Burn.

And really the Pets aren’t burned so much as used for bait to try and catch a Beadol. Beadols are rare, special Pets, only available through these events. And though any Pets put into the trap are destroyed forever, the chance to summon and own a Beadol is enough incentive to bring many owners out to sacrifice their Pets.

This Pet burning / Beadol capturing event is only open for 24 hours from Friday, November 25th, 7am CST, until Saturday, the 26th. Go to https://www.champions.io/pet-burning to participate.

How to Trap a Beadol

Trapping Beadols requires adding Pets to the trap as bait. Players add one or more Pets, each one increasing the chance of success, up to a maximum of 90%. But beware! Any Pets put into the trap are burned forever! Successful traps capture a Beadol Pet. Unsuccessful traps result in an ash NFT. Interestingly, there are several different types of ash NFTs! The use for these ashes has not yet been revealed to us.

Certain types of Pets or Pet Traits offer additional point value and greater chances for a successful trap. The selection of trait bonuses changes every hour. The Overlords are fickle, so no one knows what sort of tasty Pet treats they may prefer from one moment to the next?

For this second Beadol trapping event, the Champions Ascension team has also changed it so that players can set new traps every hour.

Pet Utility

But Pets aren’t just for burning. They have game utility as well. And though they are not yet implemented into the world, the Champions Ascension team has been revealing some of their planned functionality.

Pets will provide various bonuses in the Arena, and some even have a non-combat utility. For example, Beadols let their owners steal a random buff from their opponent when they trigger a combo finisher. They also have a chance to steal tickets from NPCs when wandering the main world.

The Geckoid Pet reduces owners’ cooldowns when the player is below 15% health, and Cramsters tag opponents with a debuff when they block three times in a row that causes them to take double damage on succeeding blocks! Take a Papiro Pet into the arena and benefit from a growl every 25 seconds that makes one of your Champion’s parts lucky, dealing double damage on the next hit with that part.

In addition, there are some general Pet bonuses. If the Pet Family matches the Champion Family, the Champion receives a health and damage bonus. If the Pet Essence matches the Champion Essence, then the Champion receives a bonus to their Fury of the Titan special attack.
