After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

A growing segment of the web3 gaming world has begun to include build and earn opportunities. Normally modders for games are left to their own devices in regards to monetization. But in the web3 world, we see more events where those who can create useful or fun content for these games are rewarded.

Today we bring you two such contests that are open now. The winners will have their entries added to the associated game, and will also receive rewards.

As I was writing this article, The Sandbox and VoxEdit just announced yet another content creation contest! This one has the theme of “Cyber-Myth: Post-Human Age Goddesses”. Read the blog post for more information.

VoxEdit Folklore Contest

VoxEdit is the official asset creator/editor for The Sandbox. They have been holding regular contests for asset creators for some time. And, as the quality of entries improves, so do the rewards! The latest VoxEdit contest includes 15,000 SAND in prizes for the top 10 entries.

The theme for this contest is Folklore. They want creators to show us the mythical creatures of their homelands in voxel form! Submissions opened on January 23rd and close on February 5th, 11:59pm UTC. Reviews and voting runs from February 6th through the 19th, with results announced on February 25th. All entries must be made with VoxEdit and there are some other rules as well. Be sure to read the official contest post for details.

Players must submit a GIF of their animated asset (Gyazo is the recommended app for this task), make a tweet of the GIF using the hashtag #VoxEditWeekly and tag @VoxEdit and @TheSandboxGame. Then, as a final step, builders must fill out the official contest form.

Blankos Block Party Lunar New Year Build

Meanwhile, Blankos Block Party is holding a Lunar New Year themed build contest. To participate, players need to create a new Party, themed around the Lunar New Year or the Year of the Rabbit.

The submission for this contest runs from January 23rd to February 24th, 5pm PST. The team will hold an internal vote to choose the top two entries, and there will also be a community vote to choose their favorite. The winners will be announced on March 2nd. Then the games will be showcased on the official Blankos Twitch stream on March 17th, with rewards sent out soon after that.

Season 1 of Blankos Block Party was released on September 28, 2022, introducing features such as Party Passes, new Blanko characters and several game modes. The 2.0 updates went live on December 12, 2022, and players can now head over to the game to access the new features.

New features and updates

Blankos Block Party now allows players to search for friends and send friend requests. Each user has a unique ID that can be used for sending and receiving friend requests. This feature is accessible through Social option in the game menu. When in the lobby, a pop-up comes on the screen of players for better communication. These pop-ups will show whether the Party Leader is selecting a Brawl or a Party Bus. There is also an update in the chat window to fit all messages inside the window.

Target Mode

This update also comes with a new game mode – Target Mode. Players have to destroy the target dummies using a gun in this mode. The player who hits the most number of dummies wins the game. This timed, PvE game is available both in Party Bus and Brawl.

New Brawl Maps

In the new update, 9 new parties are available in the Brawl Map rotation. Players have created these parties and they offer a wide variety of environments to play in. The new parties include N.O.O.B Town 2022, Cold Shot, Race Parties, Fantasy Fort V2, Vibe Parties, SOS Vibes, Blankos Daycare, Prezzie Adventure, and Topfrogger.

Other Updates

Some UI-specific updates include the “Game Objective”, which will now be displayed at the center of the screen for accessibility. A number of other bugfixes and changes have been made, such as a fixes for several animations and some build mode issues. Also, players can no longer take damage when the party is over, in the pre-match lobby or in the party-start countdown. In addition, a brand new Inventory page has been added, which displays a player’s accessories and emotes.

What is Blankos Block Party game?

Blankos Block Party is an NFT-powered open-world multiplayer action game that allows players to equip character NFTs, personalize and upgrade characters and use them to earn rewards by completing daily combat challenges. The Blankos NFTs are the digital assets on EOSIO blockchain that players can own to play the game.

Players can sell the Blankos within the in-game Mythical Marketplace and customize them with loot and clothing. Blankos has two currencies – Blankos Bucks and Moola. More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

One of the play and earn features for Blankos, the Party Pass, is much like a typical battle pass you see in other games. Players earn points by completing objectives and daily, weekly, and seasonal quests. Points level up the Pass. At each level, players receive special rewards in the form of tokens, avatars, and wearables

The Cosmic Groove Party Pass opens on November 23rd at 17:00 UTC and runs through January 18th, 2023. There will be a maintenance period prior to the release.

The basic rewards for Cosmic Groove include a new avatar, Cassiopeia, new accessories in the form of Cosmic Creepers (shoes) , Orbital Bracelets, and Orion’s Belt, and two new emotes, En Garde and Free Float.

For those who purchase the Party Pass+ ($15), some additional rewards become available. Party Pass+ holders can also earn a Captain Adhara Blanko and the accessories, Adhara’s Helm, Hesperiad’s Gyre and The Adhara Flyer. In addition there is a Hesperiad Blanko, and two more emotes Spacewalk and Cosmic Dance available to Plus members.

Blankos is free to play, and reaching the first few levels of rewards is very easy. In fact, you still have a couple of days to grab rewards from the currently active Party Pass before the Cosmic Groove starts!

Holiday themed events, items, and skins are all popular, in gaming. So it’s no surprise to see similar events in web3 games. Blankos Block Party, a multiplayer experience featuring PvP Brawls and a public Junction for hanging out in, brings a Halloween themed event to their game.

The Halloween event begins on October 19th at 10am PDT (17:00 UTC). During the event, players collect Pumpkin Tokens during Brawl Parties and complete special challenges to earn an exclusive rewards. Players can earn up to 1,000 XP in daily rewards by participating in the event. They will also have the opportunity to win a Darkest Health Gumball. It’s unclear exactly how this works. It might be related to collecting the Pumpkin tokens? But, apparently this prize is a returning item from last year. This Gumball can be used to upgrade a Blanko or to change its color.

You should also expect a bit of a change to the hangout area known as the Junction. It may look a little different for the next couple of weeks! The Halloween event runs until November 2nd.

Blankos Block Party is currently in Season One and the Party Pass (battle pass) already offered spooky Halloween-themed skins as rewards. No word yet on whether Blankos will offer any trick-or-treating.

In addition, Blankos Block Party recently added 21 new Brawl Parties to their Brawl rotation. All created by players, these selections offer a wide variety of new environments to play in. From a wrestling ring to a race over a lava pit to a sushi battle, these new maps should bring some new life to the game for those who have worn out their interest in the existing maps.

Blankos Season One

Blankos Block Party rocks into Season One with new classes, new perks, a new Party Pass, new Blankos collections, and even a new basic, starting Blanko (making the old, red Blanko a kind of collector’s item!) The Blankos universe features a large social area to hang out in and practice your parkour skills. It also includes a PvP Brawl, pitting players against each other in three random events. Life Beyond After Alpha Party

Life Beyond closes down their first alpha phase with a huge after party on October 12th. Incorporating the lore into the gameplay is a big part of Life Beyond. So, to celebrate the accomplishments of the players in clearing an area for the initial settlement on Dolos, the DEEP Agency will be hosting a special, in-game gathering. Though only open to holders of any of the Key NFTs from Life Beyond, Keys can be picked up from the secondary markets for very reasonable prices. You also have until October 11th to participate in the current alpha missions and earn experience and other potential rewards.

Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball PvP

On October 4th, Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball plans to launch their first PvP experience. Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball is a game about mice, playing dodgeball, and then coming back to haunt each other when they are defeated! Basically, a MOBA style game with some unique features. Players collect cannonballs, and try to hit the enemy heroes, depleting their shields and stunning them. Register on their site to receive early access. You will also need to join their Discord server.

Private Beta 2 Launched for Illuvium Arena

Illuvium Private Beta 2 brings a major update to the auto-battler game. Illuvium Arena is only part of the planned Illuvium universe. The current alpha for Illuvium Arena is a PvE, auto-battler where players field a team of creatures against a selection of foes. After each successful battle, new foes appear and the player has a chance to change and upgrade their team composition. Players compete to see who can survive the most waves of enemies and earn a spot on top of the daily leaderboards.

Voxie Tactics Season 0

Voxie Tactics Season 0 launches on October 10th, with weekly leaderboards, a rental system, and opportunities to play and earn. This squad-based, fantasy, tactical combat game could solidify itself as a long-term web3 game. We’ve seen the rental markets for some games implemented with lackluster results, but Voxie Tactics may be in the right gaming space to make it work. MetalCore Open World Alpha

We haven’t seen any massive FPS games in the web3 space yet, and MetalCore looks to be the first! With a strong semblance to the old Planetside game, MetalCore promises a sci-fi, team-based shoot-em-up where players can play as ground troops or pilot a vehicle or mech as they battle across various maps. MetalCore received positive reviews from their recent demo at PAX West. Expect to see the first chances to play in their alpha in early October.

Civitas Character mint

Though they recently launched an alpha version of a game called Machines Arena on Steam, the Civitas team turns back to their primary game and prepares for their first Character Mint. The mint starts on October 4th and features two Character types, several archetypes, a whitelist mint, and a Dutch auction! All the info about the mint is here.

The Sandbox Alpha Season 3 Special events

The third season of The Sandbox is still on for the whole month of October and many events with special rewards will be running. Besides the general season rewards, many special events are held around different partners. There are rewards for specific avatar holders, but also more events open to all for chances to earn NFTs or even $SAND prizes.

The Blankos Block Party is ready to keep rocking with a lot of new content for players in Season 1, which kicks off on September 28th. Players will able to choose new classes, purchase new Blankos, and earn rewards from new Party Passes! And with a free-to-play model, Blankos Block Party is open to everyone.

New in Season 1

It begins with a set of Kaiju-themed Blankos. The Godzilla Blanko arrives in the store on September 28th, with Mothra and Mechagodzilla following a few weeks later. There will also be a new N.O.O.B. Blanko for players to use for free. This will replace the current red N.O.O.B., though players who have been around for a long time will still be able to use the original red Blanko.

Season 1 brings a new Starter Bundle. For $11.99 or 1200 Blank Bucks, players can purchase a Starter Bundle which contains many consumables and a Season 1 Blanko NFT. The NFT is named Kandie and exclusively found in this bundle. The Consumables include 70,000 XP Chips, 20,000 Moola, and 12 random Gumballs. Each account may only purchase one Starter Bundle.

And with a new season comes a new Party Pass. The plus version of the pass costs $14.99 and lets players unlock Blankos, accessories, and other goodies. However, there will be a free pass available as well. The pass for Season 1 will be Halloween themed, with similarly-themed Blankos as rewards.

Season 1 also introduces three new character classes — the Bruiser, the Trickster, and the Tracer. Each comes with their own unique selection of Power Moves, Power Perks, and Foundation Perks.

And finally, any Season One Blanko opened includes two hidden perks from the following list.

• Attachment Ace – Jetpacks use 10% less energy
• Plummet – Your terminal velocity is higher
• Holiday Shopper – Shoving an enemy provides a 5 second speed boost
• Life of the Party – Emoting near your allies gives them 5 health per second
• Bopper – You can jump off of other Blanko’s heads
• Big Pockets – increases max and starting ammo by 50%

Top play-to-earn games by active users

Gameta is still on the top of the chart, and by quite a stretch. What could be worrisome is that we are seeing a decline in the player base for almost all of the top projects. Players might be flocking to other games, spreading the player base while the space is still struggling to attract more users from traditional gaming. Hopefully, we will see this trend reverse with the upcoming AAA releases planned for the end of the year. A crypto market pump might also be helpful to attract players, but that might take some time given the current economic conditions. Anyway, now is still a great time to test new games, and farm tokens and NFTs while having fun.

Top 10 NFT collections

With trading volumes still trailing down, the NFT market is still trying to find its way. The RENGA collection by the artist Dirty Robot seems to be the hype trade of the week. We also notice the comeback of Doodles with their v4 collection and Azuki with a nice spike in trading volume.

The mystery box will contain any one of the 4 Atari Blankos – Pong, Tempest, Centipede, and Joystick. There is 25% for receiving each Atari Blanko.

Atari Joystick Blanko Giveaway

Mythical Games will randomly select 10 recipients who will receive a Joystick Blanko in the next giveaway. The Joystick Giveaway applications will be accepted until September 19, 2022, 18:59 UTC.

Community Incentive Reward

The developers of Blankos have announced huge rewards for all players who help the Blankos community grow. Three milestones have been set according to which players will receive exclusive rewards during the first week of launch.

Players can sell the Blankos within the in-game mythical market and also customize them with loot and clothing. Blankos has two currencies – Blankos Bucks and Moola. Blankos Bucks is the in-game currency that can be acquired by purchasing items from the in-game store. Moola is the game’s underlying currency that can be acquired by completing challenges and participating in giveaways.
