After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

Big Time has planned to reward their players and NFT holders ever since they revealed their general economic plans a few months ago. And now, this multiplayer, fantasy, RPG announces their plans to airdrop 108,000 Utility NFTs to their players. Distributed over eight months, these Mystery Box rewards can even contain Mythic level items!

These Utility NFTs are used with Spaces to create crafting areas. Mystery Boxes can also be traded on the marketplace for those who don’t want to open them. In fact, you can’t even open them yet! Big Time hasn’t told us when opening will be available, but hopefully sometime soon!

Airdrop Eligibility

Eligibility for the first month’s airdrop requires owning at least one Big Time Collectible (SPACE, cosmetic item, Mystery box, etc). However, that does not guarantee an airdrop. Every eligible player receives points based on the number of owned Collectibles as well as their game playtime. Big Time has not provided details on how exactly points will be calculated.

For future months of the airdrop, players must also play at least one time during the month. The number of boxes airdropped increase from month to month, encouraging continued player activity and growth as the airdrop progresses.

Big Time also plans to deliver TIME tokens and Binance Postcards to airdrop winners at a later date.

Also, in a teaser for their upcoming patch 0.25, the Big Time team showed us some sandy, Egyptian style areas. New maps, items, and enemies, perhaps?

Players can use these watches to switch classes at any time. This lets players experience all of the different characters, without the annoyance of logging in and out and maintaining separate inventories.

Big Time is currently in closed alpha, available to those with Silver, Gold, and Ruby Passes, and anyone who own a SPACE NFT. They do hold regular giveaways for passes on their social media channels.

The Big Time’s team announced how the game’s economy will work not long ago. Basically, SPACE holders will be able to produce cosmetic items and hourglasses. This last item is essential to receive $TIME tokens in the future while playing. But for SPACE owners to produce hourglasses, they will need the right building within their SPACE.

This is where utility NFTs come in. These NFTs will allow SPACE holders to build the necessary buildings to produce either cosmetics or hourglasses. Each Mystery Box will contain three Utility NFTs which can be either an Armory, a Forge, or the rarest of them all, a Time Warden. The Armory and Forge will be used to craft cosmetics while the Time Warden’s utility is to craft Hourglasses. Each utility NFT can also fall into one of eight different rarities.

Each utility NFT will then fit into one of SPACE’s exits. The number of exits of each SPACE depends on its rarity. Obviously, SPACEs with higher rarities will have more exists allowing its owner to have a larger operation within it.

But, SPACE holders will not be able to attach high-rarity Utility NFTs to their low-rarity SPACEs. This means that SPACE owners will want to attach Utility NFTs of the SAME rarity as their SPACE to maximize its potential. This will incentivize players to buy more Mystery Boxes in the upcoming sale.

Only 4,500 out of 6,000 Mystery Boxes will be up for sale. To participate players must deposit funds on Open Loot.

What’s Big Time?

Big Time is an instance-based MMORPG with web3 elements like NFTs and in the future the $TIME token. Players start at level 1, just like every other game of the same genre, and then they adventure into dynamically-generated instances and get stronger. Each instance will be unique, have random quests, and come with its own challenges.

One of the things that distinguishes Big Time from other MMORPGs is that class, level, and gear are bound to an item, the Pocket Watch. By changing the Pocket Watch players can change classes on the fly, unlike other games where players are stuck with their initial choice when they started playing.

By slaying monsters and completing quests players are rewarded with loot such as equipment, gold, and cosmetic NFTs. These NFTs can then be sold on the marketplace for real money.

Personally, I had a good time playing Big Time. I think its gameplay is up to the games we see in web2 nowadays and I also like its cartoonish graphics. It is a game I recommend for MMORPG lovers. More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

The Big Time economy is based around player crafting. These are items that players can use and wear in-game. However, they are not items that provide gameplay bonuses. Instead, players craft and trade cosmetic NFTs.

Cosmetic NFTs in Big Time are always limited. Big Time runs in seasons, with a new set of cosmetic items available each season. Only a certain amount of each rarity will exist, with higher rarities more limited in number. In fact, each seasonal cosmetic item can only have one, single Unique rarity item in existence — ever! And since upgrading requires consuming three copies of the lower level of NFT, crafting an item all the way up to Unique would require over 19 thousand common NFTs! Unique cosmetics will certainly be a major status symbol in-game.

Upgrading Cosmetic NFTs does not provide any stat bonuses. Instead it upgrades the visuals for the item. Certain NFTs may also provide access to exclusive content in-game.

Big Time Spaces and Utility NFTs

Spaces in Big Time are an expansion to player housing. Every player has access to their own Starter Area which they can decorate and add vendors too. But then, players can also attach Spaces to their home, expanding it and opening up new options. Each Space has an entrance point, and one or more exit points. Larger and rarer Spaces have more Exits. Players can attach other Spaces or utility NFTs such as a Forge or Armory to the exit points. This limits how much players can expand, and encourages them to purchase extra Space NFTs when they want to attach additional utility NFTs and engage in crafting.

The rarity of a a Space determines the rarity of the utility NFTs that can be attached to it. Basically, a Space can’t have a utility NFT attached to it that is rarer than the Space. Exalted Spaces are the exception and can attach any rarity NFT. This includes rarities higher than Exalted — Exotic, Transcendent, and Unique. This same pattern holds for decorative items as well.

Though this is an interesting system, I wonder if it won’t suppress the value of higher rarity, Space-related NFTs since the market for them will be much smaller.

The basic utility NFTs in Big Time are Armory, Forge, and Time Warden. Players use the Armory and Forge for refining Cosmetic Shards (used in crafting), crafting NFTS, and upgrading NFTs. Upgrading requires three of the same item, as well as TIME tokens and Cosmetic Shards. The items are burned, creating a steady demand for new items as players try to upgrade to fancier versions.

Time Wardens are used to create and recharge Hourglasses. Hourglasses have a capped supply, and are the only means of generating TIME tokens.

Players equip an Hourglass and then generate TIME tokens as they play. When the sand for the Hourglass runs out, players must recharge it via a Time Warden. Hourglass construction and recharging takes Time Crystals, which are a premium, in-game only, untradeable currency that players purchase directly from Big Time.

Players can also gain experience for their utility NFTs by using them. Spend Time Crystals to level them up and receive bonuses such as a faster crafting time.

Big Time plans to sell Mystery Boxes that contain three, random utility NFTs.

Unfortunately, Big Time is not yet in open alpha. In order to participate, players must own either a VIP Pass or a Space, Big Time’s equivalent of housing. Big Time’s market exists on the new Open Loot platform. Purchasing a pass is not cheap, but Big Time regularly holds giveaways for Ruby Passes. Space NFTs are much more reasonable and the smallest can be purchased for under $50.

What’s in Patch 0.23?

Patch 0.23 brings some big changes to Big Time. Including changes to the skill progression flow, requiring a wipe of player data. So, with this patch, Big Time resent the progress for all players. This reworking of the skill tree progression includes locked skill branches. Unlocking these branches requires visiting an appropriate trainer. Trainers can be found throughout the lands.

Once you get back to adventuring, you may notice some new bosses appearing. Especially in higher level adventures. These promise more variety and excitement for those final encounters.

Patch 0.23 brings new abilities. Two for Shadowblades — Explosive Kunai, a fast projectile that causes area fire damage, and Ignition Power Grenade, another AoE attack that reduces the fire resistance of those affected. Seems like a hot combo!

Chronomancer also gets a new ability, Meteor Shower. We didn’t get a description for this ability, but presumably it’s an AoE damage attack.

In addition, this patch brings a ton of balance tweaks, bug fixes, and user interface improvements. Improvements to the AI, the visuals in some of the dungeons, and the sound effects should make for a better play experience. Also, a number of visual effects associated with various abilities have been updated or added. These not only make the game prettier, but also assist players in more easily identifying the abilities other players are currently using.

Among the interface improvements is a new Adventure Summary screen at the end of a dungeon run. This summarizes loot found, damage dealt, and other stats players might be interested in seeing. Read the Big Time blog post for a full list of changes.

Want to play in the Big Time alpha but don’t own an access pass? Well, your answer is now here in the form of SPACE Thursdays! Beginning on October 13th, 2022, and recurring on every Thursday at 8pm EDT, Big Time will open their alpha to SPACE holders.

You will need to purchase your SPACE before the event starts. SPACE is a combination of land and housing. Players craft game items in their SPACE, and can upgrade it with various add-ons and bonuses. The larger the SPACE, the more slots it has for additions. Rarer SPACEs produce rarer items. Sizes range from Small to Large and rarity levels from Rare to Exalted. Players can even combine multiple SPACEs to make a larger crafting area.

And while the game still isn’t free to access, acquiring a SPACE ($60) is much cheaper than the lowest priced Pass ($225). And by purchasing a SPACE you get access to the alpha, plus a game NFT that will have ongoing utility.

Spaces and Passes are both available on the new Open Loot platform.

Launched in the Spring of 2022, Big Time has already been in alpha playtest for some time, with regular patches for bugs and balance. Also, alpha players can already acquire game NFTs that can be traded or sold outside of the game.

There are 4 types of VIP passes in Big Time – Gold, Silver, Jade and Ruby. The passes were sold $499, $299, and $179, respectively. Ruby Passes are not being sold but given away to active members of the community. The passes can now be purchased on OpenSea or on the Big Time marketplace.

The early access pass will allow players to access limited edition features and exclusive NFT drops. There are four tiers of the Early Access Pass in respect to the VIP passes, which are as follows:

• Gold: Get access to NFT drops from week 1 to week 10 with Insane, Mega, Great, and Normal drop rates.
• Silver: Get access to NFT drops from week 5 onwards with Mega, Great, and Normal drop rates.
• Jade: Get access to NFT drops from week 8 onwards with Great and Normal drop rates.
• Ruby: The lowest of all, you get access in week 10 only.

How to buy and redeem your Big Time Early Access Pass?

If you are not a pass holder, you will need to purchase a pass on OpenSea or on the Big Time NFT marketplace. Once the redemption date for your pass level is here, you will need to redeem access by connecting your wallet to the Big Time website. You cannot redeem the early access passes before the redemption date. Redeeming an early access pass burns the NFT and grants your account early access to the game.

At the time of writing, the floor prices for the passes are around 1.7 ETH for a Gold pass, 0.3 for Silver, and 0.09 for Jade.

Big Time will soon introduce two token mechanics: a crypto token and their Space NFTs. You can read more about the Space NFTs here, but Big Time Studios also announced plans for their own Big Time token. Players can earn this new token as part of the game’s play-to-earn economy. You will need to battle enemies and complete quests. They can then use these tokens to purchase NFTs, speed up crafting times and repair damaged or depleted items.

However, acquiring the rights to participate in the play-to-earn economy isn’t that simple. Here are the steps required:

1. Buy a Space NFT or win one through gameplay
2. Unlock the Time Keeper portal. You can in one in-game or buy on the marketplace.
3. Acquire an Hourglass in-game, from a guild or from the marketplace.

The Hourglass basically unlocks the power to earn tokens, but the sands of time also need to be replenished. Therefore players will need to go to the Time Keeper, and pay some tokens.

Big Time Studios has stated that the token economy will be 100% player-driven. They will not do a pre-sale. The only way to start earning tokens in Big Time is through gameplay. And no, the team didn’t reveal a name for their token yet. TIME token? Perhaps. BTT? Possibly.
