More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

• Best Action Game: Superior ()
• Best Mobile Game: Thetan Arena ()
• Best Adventure Game: Big Time ()

• Best Shooter Game: MetalCore ()
• Best Strategy Game: Gods Unchained ()
• Best Card Game: Gods Unchained ()
• Best Multiplayer: Game: EV.IO ()
• Best Esports: Game: EV.IO ()
• People’s Choice Award: League of Kingdoms ()
• Games’ Choice Award: The Harvest ()

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

About Fusion Event

In the Fusion event, players can acquire upgraded characters and earn gTHG rewards by climbing the leaderboard. Heroes can be fused to create new heroes of Epic and Legendary rarities. Players can use 3 NFT Heroes for fusing, of which one NFT must be from the inventory and the other two from the requirement pool.

The output Hero will depend on several factors, such as input Hero levels, rarity, and gTHC battle points. Players can restart the entire fusion process if unsatisfied with the outcome. The Fusion event can be accessed by visiting the Marketplace. Players can earn extra gTHG rewards by completing fusion milestones listed on the marketplace. The more fusions players make, the higher the rank on the leaderboard will be.

One year of Thetan Arena

Thetan Arena originated from a Vietnamese developer, WolfFun, who relaunched the traditional MOBA game Heroes Strike with this new name. It launched as a play-to-earn version with the existing features of Heroes Strike. Having fully finished gameplay standards and a source of blockchain revenue, Thetan Arena emerged as a promising blockchain game. 

In the initial days, the game raised money from early backers through an IDO, which brought in $200 to develop the game. Within months, Thetan Arena generated more revenue and downloads in two months than Heroes Strike did in a lifetime.

The Thetan Arena game was launched in November last year, after which it gained over 3 million users in the first week. After the launch, the developers added many features to the game, such as guild quests, a rental system, co-op modes, hero staking, and much more. As a result, the game became the biggest MOBA on blockchain and one of the biggest play-to-earn games. 

Since the game’s launch in November 2021, the game has achieved several milestones. According to a report published by BSC, Thetan Arena had an estimated 900,000 holders of game NFTs during January 2022. Thetan Arena runs on both Android and iOS and recently became the number one app on the App Store in 11 different countries. Currently, the game has a player base of 25M.

What is Thetan Arena Game?

Thetan Arena is a free play-to-earn mobile game on the BNB Chain. The game has been developed by the gaming studio Wolffun Game, who released the Heroes Strike game. In the game, players own game characters, weapons, items and can participate in Deathmatch, Battle Royale, Tower Destroy, and many other game modes. 

Players can also trade heroes and play free multiplayer matches. Rewards can be won in the game if a team wins or a player is the last man standing in a Deathmatch. It is also the only game in which NFT characters have a limited usability lifecycle; the NFT items can be used to earn in-game currency only in a limited number of matches.

After releasing details of their content creator program in previous weeks, the team behind Thetan Arena teases guilds to join their guild Accelerator Program with a grant pool of 500,000 $THG. The program has been named G.A.P 2022.

When applying for the guild Accelerator Program, the Thetan Arena team specified three requirements. 

According to the program guidelines, the guild’s Twitter account should mention @ThetanArena in its twitter description, highlight Thetan Arena on its websites, and update its guild rank on Twitter. After satisfying the qualifications, guilds will be required to register and will be given a referral link to track new NFT users invited by the guild.

How the Guild Accelerator Program Works

In order to participate, guilds that fulfill the requirements will need to submit the registration form available at this link.

During this program, each month will have a scheme of specific activities that align with Thetan activities. Such activities like streaming, creator content, tournament and in-house events, aiming to increase community engagement, will be deployed alternatively as below:

After verifying your registration, Thetan Arena will send a Referral Link. For each NFT user invited by your Link, the guild receives 1 guild Point. An NFT user is a player that completes the first 5 battles in Thetan Arena and has at least 1 action on Thetan Marketplace (buy box, buy hero, rent hero, stake $THG).

Guild points are reported monthly at the end of the month. Based on the accumulated guild points, the guild will receive a bonus + benefits accordingly. Benefits may include special roles in the Discord channel, whitelisted wallets, constant support, AMA with the team, and so much more. 

The guild will commit to monthly activities with Thetan, then send the monthly report to gain a Grant Application Package. The two available packages are 

BUDDY — for guild < 30k members : 2,000 — 5,000 $THG

GIANT — for guild > 30k members : 10,000 $THG

Is Thetan Arena Dying? 

Although the team has significant funding and a great game on their hands, Thetan Arena’s governance token, $THG, is taking continuous hits. In the last month alone, it went from $2 to $0.20. Players are getting discouraged, and the game is not really pushing NFTs and play to earn mechanics hard enough.

The $THC token price action is even worse. The rewards token keeps dropping and there are not enough utilities for this token to prevent players from just dumping their rewards in the open market.

The team has also been accused of a lack of communication with their users, which are mostly standing by waiting for an update that would rebalance the internal economy.

The problems might also be related to the free-to-play model, probably way too generous. New players see little to no incentive in buying NFTs to profit and earn $THG from the gameplay, as the price fluctuates way too much and they could never receive a positive ROI from the investment.

Additionally, the growth of the player base is becoming stagnant, and the chances of Thetan Arena becoming once again a popular hit in the play to earn space are low.

Lunar New Year Update

The 2022 January update will bring some big changes as the largest update since launch. This includes character balances, and the anticipated appearance of Velvet, a legendary character not yet released.

Velvet will join Taekwon and Mortal as a Legendary Assassin.  Velvet wields two laser swords and will have high-speed stats. Her standard skin includes a mech suit of armor capable of flying. 

While it’s not yet certain another feature hinted at release is the much anticipated Hero Rental. Although there are no details published yet the “Rented” button appearing in the games inventory system may be an indicator that this feature is scheduled for release this month.

The project team will soon be enabling the purchase of Heroes from the store with THC rather than WBNB. The project team will also be launching staking, and a special event, “Vesting Safe”.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year the new Hero, Velvet, and an old favorite, Breaker, will have new themed skins introduced. These will likely be available through the Lunar New Year box available in the marketplace.

Optimization of the game includes game balances (possible character buffs) and an improvement to matchmaking.

Thetan Economy and THC Convert Programs

When the program team launched the first THC convert program it was arguably too successful. It exhausted funds allocated in less than three minutes. With rates ranging from $0.50-0.70 depending on the lockup period that wasn’t a surprise. 

The second converting program, which only offered $0.18 has failed to use allocated funds despite offering a twenty-four-hour extension. At time of writing it had used only 3.5 million of the allocated 13 million available.

Despite the convert and burn program, over the last month THC and THG have decreased 61.65% and 49.47% respectively.  While the entire cryptocurrency market is in decline that’s a big drop.  On-Chain metrics indicate wallets interacting with the Thetan contract have decreased from ~6,000 per day to just over 1,500.

This however hasn’t stopped the dev team who are releasing bug fixes and new features nearly daily.  As the game is only two months old it’s still early. The struggling economy does offer opportunities. Players can purchase NFT Heroes in secondary markets for less than USD 10.

Official Launch

After the official launch Thetan Arena has been on quite a ride.  The instant registration of millions of users is because the game is a rebadged version of the existing game “Heroes Strike”. It’s not surprising that given a play to earn platform, a large number of players from the previous game registered with Thetan Arena.

In addition to the millions of registrations, the first flash box sale returned an income to the game treasury of $27.97 million.  On the 12^th of December WolfFun announced they would use 100% of these funds to buy back their in-game cryptocurrencies, THG and THC to support the in-game economy.

THC and THG Price

While Thetan Arena has a lot of promise, the current price of THG and THC has diminished significantly.  At the time of writing in the last seven days Thetan Arena (THG) and Thetan Coin (THC) were down 26.3% and 21.92% respectively.  While WolfFun has announced a buyback, they are yet to announce specifics, and the community hasn’t yet seen the impact that the buyback will have. While WolfFun is a proven game studio and time will tell if they can create a self-sustaining crypto economy in the play to earn space.

Thetan Arena Gameplay

The game launched with four different modes each of which has their own appeal.  The types of games are:

• Battle Royale (Solo / Duo) – The last player(s) standing battle
• Tower Siege – Charge up and set your super robot on the enemy before they set theirs on you!
• Super Star – A capture the flag style game where you capture the star and then collect points
• Deathmatch – Four v Four playoff with the winner being the team with the most kills

There’s a Free to Play which enables you to earn but requires an extremely skilled player to do so.  However, using a free to play character isn’t rewarded with THC for each battle.  If players choose to purchase a character they can win THC for each successful game they play.  The cheapest characters on the market currently sell for approximately USD 80. 

A unique feature of this game is that purchased characters have a usable life.  That means characters purchased will have a limited number of games they can be awarded THC. Players will not be rewarded after characters have exhausted their game limit. WolfFun states that this is so players will continue to buy characters and supports the treasury. The treasury is used to purchase THC and thus supports the game economy.

This open beta test for Thetan Arena is really aimed at the game’s gameplay mechanics. Currently all play-to-earn mechanics have been turned off. However, the game’s economy runs on testnet, in order to simulate the way things would work on mainnet.

The Vietnamese game studio Wolffun Game has seen its Thetan Arena token THG already gain almost half a million followers on Coingecko. Furthermore, the project recently launched its THG token on PancakeSwap, and it now has a value of $2.80. The initial reception of the Thetan Arena alpha seems to be positive, judging by social media posts.

Thetan Arena doesn’t have any marketplace or play-to-earn integrations yet, as the game is still under heavy development. In addition players can’t make character progress, as all in-game data will get reset after the alpha test. However, the team is handing out some rewards to the top 3 players in the leaderboard.
