We continue to see more integration of blockchain and music industries this summer. The latest news on that front comes from The Sandbox and Warner Music Group, who have partnered up for a new land sale, referred to as the ‘Infinite Pulse Land Sale’. Registration for the land raffle is open now. The neighborhood with plots available for this land sale features a large estate owned by Warmer Music, plus a number of other musical neighbors, including Blond:ish, Slipknot, Jamiroquai, Pixelynx, and even Elvis Presley (well, his estate anyway)! Just to name a few. This looks to be a pretty tight neighborhood!

Land Sale Info

This sale follows the usual routine that The Sandbox has set up. To purchase one of the available plots outright, participants must first join and win a raffle. Interested parties can enter the raffle at The Sandbox website. Entry is free, though you must have enough SAND tokens in your wallet for the type of plot you wish to purchase (1,011 SAND tokens for a standard plot, 4683 tokens for a premium)

Raffle signups began on June 22nd and remain open through July 12th. Winners will be announced on July 14th, with sales opening that same day and running through July 18th. Any unpurchased plots from the sale head to OpenSea for auction. In addition to the raffle, there will also be 11 Estate plots and 10 small plots up for auction starting on the 14th also. Raffle entry, auctions, and land plot purchases are all on the Polygon network. Purchases are made with SAND tokens.

Also, as an additional bonus for this sale, those who purchase Premium land plots will have an opportunity to win tickets to real life concerts. No details available yet for that. But it’s always nice to see real life perks included in NFT sales!

The Sandbox has been heavily promoting the idea of neighborhoods in their virtual world. At the moment, plot proximity has no effect on gameplay. However, at some point the future, there will be some kind of ability to travel between adjacent plots. Which could make who you have for neighbors somewhat important!

The Sandbox brings us their latest major event, known as May Festival. It includes over 70 experiences to play, and 1 million in SAND tokens as rewards! This event runs from May 11th through June 12th and offers special rewards for both Land holders, Avatar holders, and even bonuses for other, partner NFTs.

May Festival Info

200 is the important number here. 200 quests to be more precise. Both land and avatar owners have a pool of 350k SAND tokens, to be split among those who complete at least 200 quests. In addition, any player who completes 200 quests during the May Festival event earns a Mystery Box. Mystery Boxes can contain SAND tokens, NFTs, and even premium land parcels!

On top of all that, holders of certain collections will also have their own token reward pools! This includes separate pools of 20K SAND tokens for each of the following collections – Rabbids, Hell’s Kitchen, Madballs, Dancefight, and Steve Aoki. Another pool of 200K SAND tokens will be reserved for holders of NFTs from the Paris Hilton collection (coming soon)!

To earn rewards, players need to register with the Sandbox’s KYC system. They will also need to hold onto the related NFTs to earn from the special rewards pools.

Raffle entry is also now open for the Mega City 3 land sale. This sale includes 222 plots available for purchase through a lottery system, and 18 up for auction on Open Sea, including six estates!

At some point, The Sandbox will run out of new plots to sell. But we’re not quite there yet as The Sandbox brings us another land sale!

This sale follows the same raffle system as the last few Sandbox land sales. Players must hold at least 1,011 SAND tokens and sign up on the Sandbox website. Those who win the raffle will be randomly assigned one of the plots available. This sale offers 222 regular lands and 12 premium lands in the raffle. There will also be 6 estates and 12 plots available in auctions on Open Sea.

Mega City 3 Land Raffle

Signing up for the raffle starts on April 26th and runs through May 10th, 3am UTC. Users must have cleared the KYC process for The Sandbox to participate and they must also have enough SAND tokens in their wallet for the type of plot they sign up for — 1,011 tokens for a regular plot and 4,683 tokens for a premium plot. For reference, regular plots are currently going for ~$900 and premium plots for ~$1250 (USD) on secondary markets. At current values for SAND tokens, 1,011 tokens equates to about $600, while 4,683 tokens would be $2750! So it’s quite cheaper to buy regular plots during these raffles. The difference in value for premium plots comes from the NFT bundle that is included with a premium raffle sale (but NOT included on secondary purchases). The NFTs from these bundles for this sale include a CyberSword, racing helmet, a shoulder cape, several characters, and more.

Raffle results will be announced on May 11th at 11am UTC, and winners can make their purchase from May 11th 12pm UTC to May 15th, 12pm UTC. Any plots that aren’t purchased during that window will be put up for auction on Open Sea.

This ‘Voxel Madness’ land sale follows Sandbox’s new raffle system. Players must have an account with a verified identity (KYC). Then, to enter the raffle, the account must hold 1,011 SAND tokens in their connected wallet (4,683 if they want to sign up for a Premium land), the price of a plot. Players with enough tokens can enter both raffles.

Raffle signups open on February 14th, 3pm UTC, and remain open through February 20th, 3am UTC. The results will be announced on February 21st at 11am UTC, with the sale opening an hour later. Interested participants can register at http://register.sandbox.game/voxel-madness

Signing up for the raffle provides one raffle ticket. In addition, those who reached level 5 or higher in previous alpha seasons receive bonus tickets.

Voxel Madness Land Sale

Raffle winners have 24 hours to purchase their land plots. All purchases will occur on the Polygon blockchain and use SAND tokens as the payment currency. Any un-purchased plots will go up for auction on Open Sea. When players win a raffle ticket and purchase a plot, they are given a random selection from those available for the sale.

And though this raffle system may annoy some people, trust me, it is much better than the frantic gas wars of the past that often resulted in many people spending money on transactions only to find out that the plot had already been purchased!

This sale offers 385 regular land plots and 45 premium spots. In addition to the raffle sale, 34 lands and 12 estates will go up for auction on Open Sea on February 21st. The Premium lands each include a bundle of NFTs for use in The Sandbox from the sale partners. This sale features plots near partners such as Invincible, Voxies, Cut the Rope, Dungeon Siege, and more!

After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

I’m looking forward to 2023, the year of blockchain gaming!

The music industry continues to move into the web3 scene. It was just under a year ago ago that Warner Music announced a partnership with The Sandbox. They’ve already had a Warner themed game jam. Bu now we see the real world moving into the virtual with the WBDD Release Party and event!

The WBDD is apparently a big deal in the DJ scene, with many DJs seeing their careers launched from this event. Well now they go digital, with music samples and NPC avatars for the winners from this year’s WBDD in a special Sandbox experience.

Released on January 26th, the WBDD Release Party experience in The Sandbox features a series of quests. Like most events in The Sandbox this one includes prizes. Players have until February 8th to complete all of the quests in the event. Those who complete all of the quests share in a prize pool of 50K SAND tokens. Those who complete all of the quests and also own a WMG Pass NFT will share in an additional prize pool of 50K SAND. In addition, anyone who completes at least one quest will receive a WBDD Memorabilia item.

And, like all events in The Sandbox, you need to pass through KYC verification before you can be included in these prizes. But, otherwise, all of these experiences and events are free to play! You can join up here.

There will also be a selection of WBDD themed Sandbox NFTs for sale on the official shop.

Music and Web3

The web3 music scene continues to grow. Though there are earlier, lesser known implementations of music a NFTs such as Yoshi Drops, the big names such as The Sandbox and Gala Games are starting to make waves in the music news cycles. NFTs make a great fit for music, both as a means of distribution and ownership, but also as a way for artists to crowdfund. And for new artists, sometimes crowdfunding is the only way to get started!

This has been a neglected potential for NFTs, and I’m glad to see more development focused on developing music and web3 connections. I look forward to seeing this facet of NFTs and the web3 scene continue to expand. This is only the beginning!

A growing segment of the web3 gaming world has begun to include build and earn opportunities. Normally modders for games are left to their own devices in regards to monetization. But in the web3 world, we see more events where those who can create useful or fun content for these games are rewarded.

Today we bring you two such contests that are open now. The winners will have their entries added to the associated game, and will also receive rewards.

As I was writing this article, The Sandbox and VoxEdit just announced yet another content creation contest! This one has the theme of “Cyber-Myth: Post-Human Age Goddesses”. Read the blog post for more information.

VoxEdit Folklore Contest

VoxEdit is the official asset creator/editor for The Sandbox. They have been holding regular contests for asset creators for some time. And, as the quality of entries improves, so do the rewards! The latest VoxEdit contest includes 15,000 SAND in prizes for the top 10 entries.

The theme for this contest is Folklore. They want creators to show us the mythical creatures of their homelands in voxel form! Submissions opened on January 23rd and close on February 5th, 11:59pm UTC. Reviews and voting runs from February 6th through the 19th, with results announced on February 25th. All entries must be made with VoxEdit and there are some other rules as well. Be sure to read the official contest post for details.

Players must submit a GIF of their animated asset (Gyazo is the recommended app for this task), make a tweet of the GIF using the hashtag #VoxEditWeekly and tag @VoxEdit and @TheSandboxGame. Then, as a final step, builders must fill out the official contest form.

Blankos Block Party Lunar New Year Build

Meanwhile, Blankos Block Party is holding a Lunar New Year themed build contest. To participate, players need to create a new Party, themed around the Lunar New Year or the Year of the Rabbit.

The submission for this contest runs from January 23rd to February 24th, 5pm PST. The team will hold an internal vote to choose the top two entries, and there will also be a community vote to choose their favorite. The winners will be announced on March 2nd. Then the games will be showcased on the official Blankos Twitch stream on March 17th, with rewards sent out soon after that.

Where once there was only the Sandbox alpha season, now there are special Sandbox events pretty much constantly! These events give players a chance to try out new, free experiences in The Sandbox, and earn SAND tokens simply by completing in-game quests and tweeting about it! You always see the current contests available on the official contests page.

Players do need to verify their identity through KYC for most events. Playing is still free and open to anyone with a basic Sandbox account. But to earn NFT and token rewards from these events, The Sandbox does require identity confirmation. This is to help make sure they’re complying with whatever local laws may apply, and also to help combat bots. As anytime you offer free rewards, expect the bots to come poking around!

The Sandbox has teased the imminent release of version 0.8 of their Game Maker program. This new version will include multiplayer features, light and visual updates, and incorporation of audio and video streaming. I look forward to seeing what sort of new creations come from this update!

But in the meantime, let’s take a look at a few play and earn events happening in The Sandbox this month!

Lunar New Year

The Year of the Rabbit begins soon, and to celebrate the Lunar New Year, The Sandbox is hosting a Lunar New Year event. This is a huge event as it includes experiences from a number of developers and studios in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. These include Softstar, Alpacadabraz, PCCW, MTR, Sun Hung Kai & Co., McDull, and The CGame and Chili Game.

The Lunar New Year event begins on January 18th and runs through February 28th. The prize pool includes 200,000 SAND tokens, memorabilia, NFTs, and Chinese Dragon mystery boxes which can include a limited edition PFP and Sandbox lands!

Metagreen Event

The Metagreen event started on January 10th and runs through February 28th. Players can explore and learn in Metagreen City, an ecologically themed creation.

Players can earn exclusive memorabilia from participating in this event. Memorabilia are basically account-bound badges. They aren’t used for anything at the moment, but in the future, there may be special perks associated with having certain Memorabilia.

There is also a reward pool of 50K SAND tokens for the Metagreen event. There are twenty-three quests to complete in this adventure, and the rewards part of the event ends on February 28th.

Save the Bees

This event is meant to help educate about global issues with declines in bee populations while also providing a fun experience. Players can earn a chance to win one of 100 NFBee NFT prizes by completing the twelve quests in the The Last Beehive experience. This event ends on January 26th

Players can also reply to a tweet from The Sandbox to help raise money for the BeeFund.

The Sandbox

The Sandbox ecosystem continue to grow and activity has increased as well. Though development progress has felt slow at times, The Sandbox seems to be building pretty strong metaverse empire with over 700 partners, many of them building their own Sandbox experiences!

This holiday spectacular from The Sandbox starts on December 20th and runs through January 3rd, 2023 (1pm UTC), spanning six, somewhat separate events.

We’ll see some returning experiences for the Season’s Greetings such as The Walking Dead, Snoop Dogg, and DeadMau5. But there will also be plenty of new experiences like the Care Bears, Elventown, Mecha Santa’s Worskshop, and more!

Season’s Greeting Events

The main contest is open to all. Anyone who completes at least 80% of the quests in the Season’s Greeting experiences share in a prize pool of 100,000 SAND and one Memorabilia. In addition, there is a special reward pool for anyone who owns a Land or Avatar NFT. This one also requires completing 80% of the quests and also includes 100k SAND tokens and one NFT. It’s unclear if everyone receives the ‘Memorabilia’ and NFT, or if it’s just one single item available. Either way, earning SAND tokens is always nice!

Next is the Care Bears event. Participants must own a Care Bear avatar, and also complete 100% of the quests in the Care Bears experience. Everyone who meets these requirements shares in 50k SAND tokens.

Midnight in the Metaverse is a more limited time event. This event runs from December 27th through January 3rd, 3pm UTC. Players must visit Club XYZ during the event, and then tweet a screenshot of themselves there to join the raffle. The prizes for the winners are one NFT and 1 Memorabilia.

There will also be social challenges through the Seasons Greetings event. These will give players entries into a special raffle. Watch The Sandbox twitter account for notifications.

And finally, there is a chance to earn a Mystery Box. To collect one of these items, players must complete all of the quests in Seasons Greetings (100%) and then post a tweet about the Mystery Box. Everyone who completes these requirements receives a Box with a random NFT inside — perhaps even a valuable one!

As with other recent The Sandbox events, players will need to go through a KYC and identification process to be eligible for prizes. And though this doesn’t officially count as another Alpha Season for The Sandbox, the amount of tokens and prizes handed out is comparable. Definitely not an event to miss if you have some game playing time during the holidays!

The user created assets available for The Sandbox continue to grow in number and quality. And a large part of that is due to these regular asset creation contests from VoxEdit! The creative guideline for the current contest is pretty simple — create a Christmas asset with VoxEdit.

But the team added something new this time around — a beginner friendly category! Anyone who has placed in the top 5 in any of the previous three VoxEdit contests cannot enter the Beginner Friendly category. This is a nice addition, as the competition for these contests has heated up over the past year. Not only are there more entries than before, but the quality of submissions has also noticeably increased!

The rewards for the beginner category are much less than the regular category, so hopefully we won’t have many folks trying to cheat the system!

The regular category offers 15,000 SAND tokens for the winners, split among the top ten entries.

1st place: 6,000 SAND
2nd place: 3,500 SAND
3rd place: 2,000 SAND
4th to 10th place: each receives 500 SAND

Hopefully new creators will feel more comfortable making submissions For the Beginner Friendly category. Rewards for this category are 5,000 SAND tokens, split among the top entries.

Submissions open on December 20th and close on December 23rd, at 11:59pm UTC. Entry review and voting run from December 24th to January 6th, with the final results announced on January 14th.

For anyone new to VoxEdit, I highly recommend watching the weekly live stream with PandaPops where she works on Sandbox assets in VoxEdit, taking suggestions from the audience while showing her process and best practices.

General Entry Guidelines

Though the creative aspect of entries is pretty open ended, there are some specific guidelines for contestants. The submissions must be original content, not violate any copyright laws, not include any inappropriate content, and be created within the VoxEdit software.

The entry should not include more than 5000 faces or 175 nodes. Maximum size is 512 voxels (equivalent to about 16 meters in game size) in any direction. Participants must create a GIF of the animated asset, tweet the GIF using the #VoxEditWeekly hashtag and mentioning @VoxEdit, @TheSandboxGame, and fill out and submit the official contest form (Regular Category Form | Beginner Friendly Category Form).
