The trading card genre of games is not new. And even web3 enabled TCG games are no longer new either. But as the scene becomes increasingly crowded, developers try to find ways to make their game different from the others. And Synergy of Serra does that with some rather unique features!

Synergy of Serra has been in alpha testing for a while. But now they open the game up to anyone and everyone — no keys required! You can download the game from the Synergy of Serra website and start playing right now!

There are no rewards for playing in the proto-alpha. Though this open alpha does offer a chance to try out a new game, and also to give your personal feedback and suggestions to the team!

How to Play Synergy of Serra

In Synergy of Serra, both players start off with a small, basic, starter deck of ten cards. In addition, each player brings a ‘suitcase’ to the game. Each suitcase contains 100 cards chosen by the player beforehand. When the game starts, the contents of both suitcases are dumped into a shared card pool. Throughout the game, players take cards from the pool to add to their discard pile. This not only evens the playing field, but it also creates room for strategic deckbuilding and tweaking decisions while playing a match!

The basic card types are Units, Attachments, and Power cards. Attachments go onto units, and Power cards are the ‘spells’ for the game. Synergy of Serra actually has a pretty decent in-game explanation of the game mechanics and keywords. Some interesting features included in the game are cards that get stronger the more they are played, and the fact that when your deck runs out of cards then you just reshuffle your graveyard and start again!

Another twist in this game is that players have no mana / energy / whatever. Instead, players are free to play any and all cards from their hand. Every turn! Any cards not played are discarded, and the player draws a new hand of five cards to begin their turn.

This makes for some quick, action-packed gameplay. Players also gain Faction Points as the game progresses. Faction Points are used to power-up associated unit cards.

As I mentioned earlier, the game is still pretty rough in regards to user interface. For instance, there are no sounds or animations in the game yet. And without these it makes it a little hard to keep up with what’s happening on your opponent’s turn (I never realized how important sounds can be to a TCG!) But the team has been releasing regular updates and fixes to the game, so I imagine this sort of polish will arrive soon as well.

Starting on November 6th, 2022, owners of Synergy of Serra Crates can deposit them for the initial unlocking event. Scheduled for November 20th, the unlocking event flags deposited Crates as available for opening and generates the cards inside. Each Crate deposited is assigned a random position in the unlocking queue. When the time comes, the system will first unlock the crates in queue order, generate the cards inside. Players don’t need to be present for the event. Since the cards inside will already be created, players can open their Crates at anytime afterwards to see the results.

Transcendent Crates

Synergy of Serra has two types of Crates — Transcendent and Base. Each one holds six cards, usable in their upcoming card game. This unlocking event is for Transcendent Crates only. Each Transcendent Crate is guaranteed to hold one Rare card. Overall rarity distribution should be about 58.33% Common, 36.67% Rare, 4.17% Epic, and 0.83% Legendary cards. Cards come in four qualities, with Gold the rarest. Gold cards will be animated.

Transcendent Crates also have a chance to contain a unique Artifact. There are 12 Artifacts in all. We don’t know much about Artifacts, but apparently they will have a significant effect on gameplay. And while there are 12 Artifacts allotted to the Transcendent set, their minting is not guaranteed. The RNG Gods will have a say in it, and there could be some Artifacts that are just never discovered!

Once the unlocking completes, any remaining Crates can be opened at any time. The initial queue is designed to give all players a chance to discover one of those coveted first mints. And though owning a low mint card doesn’t provide any sort of advantage, some collectors put great value in the mint number.

For those who want to continue to hold your crates, the staking pool for Alpha Fame remains open. Ten million Alpha Fame points are distributed weekly, with updates every two seconds. So anytime a Crate is removed from the staking pool, all of the remaining Crates immediately start receiving a little more Fame!

Alpha Fame has no use at the moment. But in the future, it will be redeemable for exclusive game items. Fame is not a tradeable currency. It can only be earned!

What is Synergy of Serra?

In a Constructed type card game, players build their deck before the match starts. Gods Unchained, Dark Country, and Splinterlands would all fall under this category. For the Serra crew, a Deckbuilder game involves building a deck on the fly, while the game is in session! They compare this to other games such as Dominion and Ascension.

I can’t say that I have ever played a Deckbuilder game before. I guess the closest thing would be the Sanctum from Gods Unchained. But that is a side feature that sometimes never comes into play during a match. In Synergy of Serra, deckbuilding during the game is an essential part of the game mechanics. Both players add cards to their deck from a shared pile as the game goes on. That’s right, both players share their cards! So if you bring a load of overpowered, rare cards to a match, your opponent has equal access to those cards. This dynamic deck feature ensures an even playing field and that no game will ever be exactly the same.

How Does this Shared Deck thing work?

Each player brings a ‘suitcase’ of 100 cards to the game. Since the game is designed as free to play, there will be a base set of cards that everyone can use. Both suitcases combine together into one Card Pool.

On game start, each player begins with 10 cards from the Starter Set in their Draw Pile. At the beginning of their turn, the active player draws cards until they have five in hand and then plays their turn. When their Draw pile runs out, their Discard pile is reshuffled into the Draw pile. With only 10 cards in your deck, this seems like it would get repetitive pretty quickly. So this is where the on-the-fly deckbuilding starts. During the game there is a ‘River’, composed of six cards from the Shared Card Pool. Two Unit cards, one Power, one Attachment, and two other random cards.

Each Card has a Credit cost. During their turn, players may spend Credits to remove cards from the River and add them to their deck. Also, they can spend Energy to redraw the River cards if they dont like the options available.

Players gain Credits and Energy steadily throughout the game. In addition to re-rolling the River, Energy is used to play cards during your turn. Credits also have an additional usage. Players spend Credits to ‘Trash’ cards, removing them from their Deck. This might be useful as the game progresses to keep the cards you most want to play more available.

What else do we know?

Synergy of Serra also features Factions for cards. As a player has more cards from the same Faction in play, that Faction ‘levels up’, and provides bonuses to associated cards. Sometimes units even receive new abilities from higher level Factions! But Faction level is not just one way. As a Faction’s numbers in play decreased , so does that Faction’s level. Other game mechanics include Attachments. Units have one to four Attachment slots. Also, some units have On Attach and On Detach effects, triggered as Attachments are added or removed. Synergy of Serra exists on the Polygon blockchain, making all these a relative cheap experience for those used to Ethereum. Alpha Fame owners can redeem the points for promo cards, special card frames, unit spawn animations, card backs and legendary card cosmetics.

It’s important to note that rewards will be distributed to your Synergy of Serra wallet. That would be the wallet that the official website creates for you upon registering your account. Depositing crates can be done from any wallet though. Rewards from a hardware wallet, Metamask wallet and the Synergy of Serra wallet will therefore all end up in the Synergy of Serra wallet.

The Alpha Fame reward program will last as long as the card game is in alpha testing. Currently gamers and fans are awaiting the Closed Alpha test of Synergy of Serra, which Calystral has scheduled for later this year. Players who will need to build an ideal deck. Cards that they don’t need, can be turned into scrap. Scrap can also be used to buy new crates. According to the game studio this system will create scarcity of certain cards, while it also create an interesting in-game economy. “It creates a theoretical bottom limit for each card’s value since people would buy them to scrape and buy crates (conversion rate)”, they wrote in their blog. However, this feature won’t be available yet.

From the moment the game launches, it utilizes cheap and instant blockchain transactions using the Matic Network. This makes trading cards a lot easier.
