Superior actually launched an early access version on Steam back in November of 2022. And while they have expanded, updated, and bugfixed their game quite a bit since then, the Steam version was still a basic web2 style game. It didn’t include NFTs or the type of rewards system that we expect with web3 gaming. That all changes with a two week playtest that started on May 15th and runs through May 30th!

This playtest will be via the Gala Games launcher. This connects players to the game via the blockchain, and lets them use their NFTs when playing. But you won’t need an NFT to play. Anyone with a Gala Games account can join in on the fun!

There will be a leaderboard competition from May 22nd though May 29th. The top 50 players receive an Uncommon Murmur or Nomad character, while the top 25% of the players receive a new, NFT backpack!

The Future of Superior

Both the web3 and web3 versions will be able to play in the same games together. But, when Superior moves onto the GYRI network (AKA the Gala Games blockchain), there will a number of benefits to playing the web3 version.

First off, there will be Challenge Rewards. Players will sometimes find Golden Challenge Keys. These Keys provide access to a special, fixed-seed, map run. Players use their Keys to join the run and compete for top spots on the leaderboard. Players earn points based on kills and the amount of time it took to complete the level. This will be a weekly event, with the top 25% of the players on the leaderboard earning points, which can then be redeemed for GALA tokens based on the size of a reward pool.

Also arriving soon is loot-based character customization. Players can find loot during runs and equip them, or even mint them as NFTs. And since Superior will run in seasons, many of these cosmetics will be available for one season only!

The game is a mission-based, cooperative, PvE experience with an evolving storyline. Missions are dynamically generated to provide varying experiences. As players progress through the missions, then have chances to upgrade their weapons and acquire various powers to help them in their quest. The farther they get, the more powerful they become, but at the same time, the challenges increase in difficulty.

When all players in a group die during a mission, the story ends, and their progress is reset. However, they do get to keep any experience acquired along the way, and use that for permanent boosts to their Characters. Players can also earn extra experience through ‘Gigs’, or daily quests. These are basic things such as kill a number of enemies, or repair a certain amount of armor.

Each Character has their own skill tree and players have a number of customizations to choose from, both when starting a mission, and when leveling up. At the start of a new story, players get to pick an initial power for that game. This, coupled with varying weapons and a number of skill options makes for a pretty wide starting base. And since each Character also customizes further as they progress through the story, Superior can be a different playthrough each time.

Superior features Weapon and Character NFTs. The game offers free Characters to play, though players who use a NFT character level up more quickly. Characters’ level caps are based on their rarity, but the caps can be raised via an ‘Infamy system’. Character NFTs keep their Infamy score, even when changing hands.

May Mayhem

Town Star relaunches their game on a new game engine called Godot. They will also be adding new content and holding weekly competitions throughout the month. Players can earn rewards by playing in May, with larger rewards for those who place at the top of the competitions.

Champions Arena has an ongoing playtest that extends into May. They have also said to expect the first ever Champions Arena NFT sale sometime this month.

GRIT, an FPS with a western theme plans to open up on a 24/7 basis for everyone with a Gala Games account. This is a huge leap forward for a game that until now, has only been open for a couple of hours a week.

Echoes of Empire just closed their five day playtest, but the team has hinted that there will be some ‘extra special excitement’ in May for EoE. Hopefully it will be a new playtest or beta announcement rather than another sale!

Mirandus will bring us another playtest in May with more goblin killing, and a huge bounty for whoever gets the first kill on their new Boss creature.

Superior should open up as free to play for everyone in May. And Legends Reborn which is already in an open playtest, promises to bring special competitions for venue owners in the coming weeks.

Gala Games also mentions two mobile games that should connect to the web3 world soon – Meow Match and Dragon Strike. These both came from their acquisition of the mobile developer Ember Entertainment earlier this year.

More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

Players can now start killing those mutants and stealing their powers because Superior is finally here. Drifter, the company behind this AAA title finally is releasing the early access launch without any more resets to the players’ progress. Unfortunately, those who want to play through Steam will have to wait a bit longer. Steam is where the web2 version of the game is without NFTs or any blockchain assets. For now, Superior will only be available through GALA games, the web3 version of the project.

Nevertheless, at a later stage, cross-platform will be possible, which means that players will be able to play together independently of which platform they have their account on.

This time, early access will be available only for players who hold one of the following NFTs:

• An Early Access Pass
• A Prime Character

The cheapest Prime Character goes for 9,200 $GALA, which corresponds to around 278 USD. All Prime Character holders received a free Early Access Pass, on November 7th, as a show of gratitude from the team.

There are a lot of new features, levels, and bosses to kill. But since this is an ‘Early Access’ version, some of the features will only be available upon full game release. This will also be a great opportunity to start leveling up characters and get a head start in Superior.

A non-blockchain version of Superior will also be launching on Steam. This launch should help put the game under the spotlight and onboard traditional players on the blockchain-powered, play-and-earn version of the game.

What is Superior?

Superior is a fast-paced action shooter on the GALA games ecosystem. In this world, superheroes turned into mutated monsters and now players, as part of humanity, must fight this threat. This can be done with the use of weapons and superpowers that can be stolen from enemies.

If a character dies he will lose all the superpowers he acquired during that play session, but he will get experience that will allow him to progress in a skill tree. The skill tree, unlike the superpowers, is permanent.

Superior is focused on co-op PvE on dynamically generated levels with an evolving storyline. Personally, I think it is one of the most fun web3 games to play to this date.

As part of the greater gaming community backlash against NFTs during 2021-2022, Steam announced that they would not support any games that used NFTs. Other distribution platforms, such as Epic, have embraced the web3 gaming movement. But not Steam.

So it was surprising to hear the announcement from Superior that the game would be distributed on the Steam platform. After all, players can use Character\ and Weapon NFTs in Superior. Did Steam change their mind? Did Superior manage to fool them somehow? Well, as it turns out, Superior is making two versions of their game. One that is web3 enabled, with NFTs, and one that is not. As you might guess, the Steam version will be NFT free. Superior plans to offer some sort of account migration option, allowing players to move their accounts to the web3 version of the game.

And, Superior will also offer the chance for players on both versions of the game to be able to play together! So, with the greater distribution available through Steam, Superior has a chance to reach a larger audience, and potentially introduce some of those players to the world of gaming NFTs!

This is a very interesting tactic and I would not be surprised to see other games try something similar. Steam users can already add Superior to their wishlist.

Superior, a third-person shooter with a very distinctive, graphic novel style game art, enters a closed alpha for a selection of players. If you signed up on their website before this, you might want to check your email for an access key! This closed alpha runs through Epic Games, and requires an Epic games account, linked with your Gala Games account.

Players can use their Character and Weapon NFTs during the alpha via the customization tab. Most likely, any character progression made during the alpha will be reset. So don’t get too attached to those extra power boosts!

In addition to the primary, story-based game, Superior also offers competitive leaderboards. Players must find a Challenge Key to participate in the leaderboards, which record who can get the highest score when clearing a specific level. Unlike regular missions, the leaderboard is single-player only (for now).

There does seem to be the opportunity to potentially make a profit by leveling up Character NFTs and re-selling them, but it’s unknown whether this is just a minor feature for Superior or if it will be expanded upon in the future.

What is Gala Gold and what are the benefits?

The Superior NFT airdrop

In Superior, you will make runs and fight evil superheroes. As you progress in your run, you will gain your defeated enemies’ powers. The game was available for test to Gala Gold members before anyone else!

The Superheroes used to protect the world, but now the mighty have fallen. Transformed into monstrous abominations, the superheroes of the world now torment and subjugate the very people they used to defend. 

You are one of the last human survivors. You and your team have had enough of these monsters that once called themselves heroes. To stop the superheroes, you’ll need to be superior as well. Unlock your own powers as you mount a resistance, and use them to fight stronger, smarter and harder. The only way to stop them is to show them that humanity fights back.

Superior is a 3rd person roguelite shooter, being developed by Drifter – a game studio that worked on franchises like Gears of War, Halo, Doom, and Call of Duty.
On the 3rd of March a test build was released via Discord, and the members of the Gala community were able to download and try the new game in its early stages. So we downloaded the demo and here is what we had the pleasure to test.

Superior Game Mechanics

This roguelite is packed with third person shooter action in an intense super powered survival-fest. In Superior, you will be fighting hordes of superheroes gone bad. Throughout the game, you play through dynamically generated missions – each with special objectives, distinct enemies and unique environments.

As you complete missions, you’ll receive Juice from your fallen enemies. This is the source of their powers, and can be used to gain new superpowers or increase existing ones. Juice can have a wide range of effects.

You can choose to increase your physical abilities like jump, melee and dash, and more. Being a roguelite game, you will lose these temporary power ups every time you die.

Each class will have their own passive skills tree, where you can customize the class to fit your playstyle. These abilities can increase the damage output, movement, armor and modify how the class performs.

After each run you will earn exp depending on your previous performance, and with each level up, a skill point will be credited, so it can be used to tweak the class in the passive skill tree.

In the test build 4 different classes were available to try out:

• Renegade – Renegade is a close combat class, with boosted armor and a pump shotgun.
• Ronin – Ronin is a medium range class, paired with a SMG.
• Nomad – Nomad is a close to medium range combat class, using a 1 handed pistol.
• Specialist – Specialist is a long range class, with a marksmen rifle as weapon.

Superior will include an assortment of characters which will be available for players to collect as NFTs. Each character has distinct bonuses to gameplay and play-to-earn potential, and rarer characters have additional skills and more earning potential.
