Shrapnel opens up Callsign reservation, allowing players to reserve their unique handle / character name, for a fee paid in SHRAP tokens. Callsigns not only reserve the name just for you, but they also provide other benefits, and can even be sold and traded to other players!

Shrapnel unveils their latest web feature, Callsigns. Callsigns are unique identifiers in Shrapnel that cannot be duplicated. Each one costs 250 SHRAP tokens and players can mint multiple Signs.

Aside from the bragging rights of being the only one in-game with the name Elon Tusk (for example), owning a Callsign also provides a number of other benefits. Players can use their Callsign when designing Insignias and on their Player Profile. They will also receive a special player profile background pack, an airdrop of two weapon skins, and access to exclusive events. And perhaps best of all, Callsigns are fully tradable on the Shrapnel marketplace (soon).

Players can visit their Callsign page at https://www.shrapnel.com/callsign to reserve their names.

Shrapnel Insignia Contest

Callsigns follow the other recent feature release, Insignia creation. Creating Insignias is free of charge, though you do need to hold an Operator NFT to access the tool.

And though the number of basic options are somewhat limited, the ability to resize, color, rotate, and move everything in layers opens up a lot of creative options. In fact, some folks have created some amazing works with the Insignia system! As user generated content is an important part of Shrapnel, this Insignia tool will likely factor into the game in the future. And I can already see a potential market for those with the skill and the eye to make incredible images like these!

Shrapnel is also currently holding an Insignia contest, with several different categories. Entries close on May 24th though, so get your creations submitted quickly! Entries will need to be submitted via their Discord chat.

What is Shrapnel?

Shrapnel is a mission-based, first person shooter where players join the warzone as operators for one of several teams entrusted with collecting and extracting valuable resources. But other operators are competing for the same resources, creating a high-stakes atmosphere that encourages risk-taking and rewards player skill.

Players equip their operators with the appropriate gear that suits their playstyle. Equipment (in the form of NFTs) is dropped when a player dies and can be looted by other players. In addition, players can gather the mysterious Compound Sigma. They must then fight their way to one of extraction spots and survive long enough to escape and claim their loot!

Shrapnel is built around player created content. This takes the form of tournaments, as well as player crafted NFTs. Players can even design their own unique vanity items to sell to other players! They will have land ownership and want to expand creation opportunities to player created maps and map items as well! Shrapnel has its own token, SHRAP. Players will be able to stake SHRAP to maps they like, sharing in the rewards from games played on that map. Meanwhile, unpopular maps will find themselves pushed down to lower reward tiers. This encourages creators to refine and improve their work in order to remain popular.

Shrapnel also plans to build a community hub, DAO governance, and a reputation system! Operators the main NFTs for the game, are currently available on the secondary markets.

Shrapnel prepares to make an initial airdrop of their SHRAP token to all Operator holders. Paired with the imminent release of their first creator tool, Shrapnel could have a content creation program up and running before the game is even released!

It’s time for a token airdrop! This one comes from Shrapnel, an upcoming FPS extraction game and consists of their native SHRAP token.

SHRAP Airdrop

To be eligible for this airdrop, users need to own one or more Operator NFTs, create an account on the Shrapnel website, and link the wallet holding their Operator(s) to their game account. A snapshot of eligible wallets will be taken sometime between the 1st and 3rd of May. Apparently, length of ownership and rarity of Operators held won’t make a difference for this airdrop. Only number of Operator NFTs held. Operators have a current floor of just under 0.14 ETH and have increased in price significantly over the past 24 hours!

In a refreshing change, SHRAP token will actually have a use case when released! SHRAP will be needed to secure a callsign (gamer name/tag) on the Shrapnel website. There will be no limit on the number of callsigns an account can create.

Insignia Creator Tool

There was another snapshot taken this morning (April 24th). This one looks for wallets holding Operators or Sigma Containment Units. Anyone flagged with this snapshot should receive early access to the first creator tool called Shrapnel Insignia. This is some sort of sticker creation tool. I don’t think we have any details on it really, but I guess we’ll receive access to it soon?

Player created content is an important part of the Shrapnel ecosystem. So it’s nice to see them hitting this aspect early, whatever form that may be.

Shrapnel announced some new details about an upcoming, free mint for SCU, or Sigma Containment Units. Only 10,000 of these NFTs will be available, and getting access requires landing a whitelist spot. But don’t worry, you still have time to make that happen!

The much anticipated FPS game, Shrapnel, recently won awards in both the Gam3r’s Choice and the Gam3 Awards contests. Now they bring us news of an upcoming, free mint. This mint is for NFTs known as Sigma Containment Units, or SCUs.

Sigma Containment Units are in-game items used to store SIGMA, which players collect during gameplay. In addition, holding an SCU NFT will provide additional benefits such as:

  • Membership to a holders-only community
  • Early access to the Creator Tools
  • Exclusive content for the Creator Tools
  • Limited Edition content from Partner Collabs
  • Rare in-game SCU skins

The Shrapnel team says that they have partnered with a few artists to create the exclusive skin rewards. These skins will be available on Avalanche.

There are several ways to get on the whitelist for this mint. The simplest route is to hold an Operator NFT and verify your wallet through Discord. Beyond that, keep an eye on Shrapnel’s social media channels for contests and giveaways and community collaborations. They also plan to open an application form at some point.

In an interesting twist, this mint will happen simultaneously on three blockchains, with the NFTs split evenly between each. This mint includes Ethereum, Polygon, and Avalanche. There will be 3,333 SCU units available on each chain, with one minter on Avalanche receiving a unique 1/1 SCU airdropped to them!

We don’t yet know the date of this mint, so there is still some time to work on acquiring one of those whitelist spots!

Players have voted and selected the winners of the Gam3r’s Choice Awards! With eighteen categories and dozens of nominees, this event brought a lot of gaming communities out to vote for their favorite games.

After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Gam3r’s Awards Winners List

Here is the full list of winners.

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

I’m looking forward to 2023, the year of blockchain gaming!

In the GAM3 Awards of 2022, multiple web3 games and content creators were elected by the community as the best projects in one or more categories. The winners will share funds from a 1,000,000 prize pool. This is possible thanks to contributions, services & grants partners like Immutable X and Blockchain Game Alliance. Polkastarter Gaming organized the whole event.

More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

SHRAPNEL is an upcoming extraction FPS with a heavy focus on user-generated content. The game is launching on Avalanche and will hold the first public mint on the 9th of June.

SHRAPNEL aims to be to gamers in their 30s now what Minecraft and Roblox were for the same players a decade ago. They want to be a one-stop gaming experience where everyone can thrive and build the experiences they want to play.

The whitelist allocation for the drop is around 60%. Other wallets can mint operator NFTs, representing three different roles in the game, on five different occasions. 2,000 operators will be minted in each phase, for a total of 10,000 minted NFTs.

On the 9th of June, the first public mint will start. Then, additional mints will be hosted on the 16th, 23rd, 30th of June, and the 7th of July.

Operators carry a comic book NFT with them, and will bring early adopters great benefits:

The mint price is set to 0.05ETH, a very affordable starting point for such an ambitious project. Future transactions will be held in SHRAP tokens, but the game’s coin is not live on any exchange yet.

Several big names in the crypto space, such as Ethlizards, are already partnering up with the team and plan on purchasing large amounts of NFTs to build interoperable utility for their collections.

SHRAPNEL Gameplay

In SHRAPNEL, players join the warzone as operators for one of the several teams and are entrusted with collecting and extracting valuable resources. Many other operators are competing for the map’s resources, creating a frantic, high-stakes atmosphere that encourages risk-taking and rewards ability.

Before entering the battlefield, players equip their operators with the appropriate gear that suits their playstyle. Equipment (in the form of NFTs) is dropped when a player dies, requiring them to consider the continuously fluctuating odds of success in every decision they make.

Players can obtain the mysterious Compound Sigma in addition to the stuff dropped by operators slain in action. Players must fight their way to one of many contested extraction spots after gathering their loot, then survive long enough to escape and claim it as their own.

Successfully extracted loot (NFTs) is stored in the player’s persistent inventory, which he or she can utilize to build loadouts in future sessions. Every decision becomes more important as the player pool diminishes and extractions become riskier.

A Creator-Run Game

The SHRAPNEL team is very clear on their intention to make the game a community-run experience.

Players will be able to craft vanity items, mint them on the blockchain, and profit from their designs on the internal marketplace.

Shrapnel operator

Additionally, all NFTs and coins earned in-game can be staked to vote on maps or proposals for the game governance.

Maps follow a race to the top process, where new maps will enter a contest and gradually get to a direct confrontation with other candidates after enough players stake their NFTs or tokens to vote on them.

Winning maps will be developed and integrated into the game.

Regardless of which maps are chosen from the race, players will be able to craft custom experiences and build their own matches to profit from their talents.

The game will feature internal tournaments, great rewards for the most engaged users, and a marketplace with specific “visibility” settings, where players with more NFT stakes will get more visibility than newcomers.

Following a similar pattern to LBRY and HIVE, SHRAPNEL aims to reward content creators, curators, and advertisers alike by implementing a reward-based system to replace standard ads. In the future, the game might host custom skins in the form of advertisements.

SHRAPNEL Tokenomics

Tokenomics Distribution Shrapnel

SHRAPNEL will feature a single-token economy, with $SHRAP being the only coin available. With a total fixed supply of 3,000,000 and a 33% pledge to community rewards, the token will be used to transact in the marketplace, yield in-game rewards, and stake it to receive airdrops.

Airdrops might contain NFT, tokens, or other perks (eg. discord roles for players).

Additionally, $SHARP is going to be the token to reward validators in the network, once the game becomes fully decentralized and will require node validators in the ecosystem. To make it clearer, they will do something similar to what Splinterlands did with SPS validator nodes

The game, however, is still in its very early stages. According to the developers, it’s still in the pre-production phase. You can read the full white paper here and follow their Twitter, but don’t expect a real token to come out any time soon, especially due to the current market conditions.

In Conclusion

SHRAPNEL has valid ideas and a great team of 30+ people coming from decades of experience in building FPS titles. They have all the right cards to build the first moddable, creator-run AAA game based on shooting and extraction mechanics, something quite unique for the genre.

We suggest taking a look at their public mint to see how successful that will be. The choice to keep running it in a bear market is brave, and we hope to see them succeed and take the game forward. After all, the GameFi space is still growing exponentially and attracts great investments monthly.

However, keep in mind giant AAA games require years to come out, and that investing in something so early-stage is always a risk. Real gameplay is planned for phases down the line only, while Phase 1 and 2 after the mint simply outline other tech stack related features, such as the marketplace or some early-stage content creation toolkits.
