With summer vacation arriving, many players are looking for new games to play. And it has now gotten to the point that web3 gaming can completely fill those long summer days! Let’s take a look at a few games to watch in June that may also offer play and earn opportunities!

New seasons, game updates, and mobile gaming and the hot items this month. Mojo Melee kicks off their first beta season, Illuvium Zero opens up a new season with the potential to mint NFTs, Star Atlas updates their Showroom, Mobox goes cross-chain, and mobile, web3 gaming is getting hotter by the day!

Mojo Melee

The Mojo Melee open beta started a bit later than I had expected, so we’re bringing it back as a game to watch in June. This beta not only opens up play to earn opportunities, but it will also serve as a showcase to see if Mojo Melee can attract and hold the interest of a large enough playerbase. Though the game is fun, and runs well, the number of options for building your team is currently pretty limited.

They also have a number of issues that affect progression, which you would think they would have taken care of before the season start. But I guess this is officially season zero, not season one, so we can count this as still being in testing mode.

But anyway, the Mojo Melee beta is free and open to everyone! You can get started here.

Mojo Melee Beta Season 0 runs through the month of June
Beta Season 0 runs through the month of June

Illuvium

Illuvium recently started a new season of their own in Illuvium Zero, their base-building, resource harvesting, blueprint manufacturing, land-based game. After a couple of rounds of testing, Illuvium is ready to turn on the NFT feature. This allows base owners to mint Blueprint NFTs from the game. Provided they have the proper buildings of course. These Blueprints will create items that feed into the larger, Illuvium Overworld at some point in the future.

And speaking of Illuvium Overworld, a new beta for this game was also released recently, offering new zones and a larger world to explore.

Star Atlas

Star Atlas is another game that continues to build out their ecosystem. They just released the latest version of their showroom, allowing players to see and fly around in their owned ships. Players can also take and post screenshots, and engage in racing games.

On top of that, Escape Velocity, their scanning and resource gathering mini-game, has been holding special events where loot odds are increased. At the time of this article, they are currently in the midst of an event that offers a 150x increase in the odds of finding platinum level loot. This loot is extremely rare, even with the odds increase, but it includes rewards worth many thousands of dollars! This mini-game is browser based and free to play (with a completely refundable deposit of ATLAS tokens). You can participate here.

Mobile Games

Web3 gaming continues to push into the mobile market. Many games are building from the ground up with mobile gamers in mind, while other, existing games, such as Gods Unchained, work to build mobile versions.

Gala Games took a different route, opting to straight up purchase a mobile games company and start finding ways to bring web3 into their existing games, The first of these integrations has already happened as Gala added NFTs to both Dragon Strike and Meow Match.

Meanwhile, one of the already live web3, mobile games, Benji Bananas, continues to hold a spot in the top 10 web3 games (in regards to active players).

Mobile, web3 gaming is just getting started. This will be an area to keep an eye for the foreseeable future.

Mobox

Mobox continues to expand, going cross-chain with the addition of MoDragons, a dragon breeding and collection game running on the Arbitrum chain. These NFTs are already proving to be extremely popular. And eventually, Mobox plans to have all of their projects on different chains connected via the MomoVerse.

Cross-chain implementation is a talking point for a lot of web3 games. But only a few have actually done anything with it. So with the concept of cross-chain interactions still relatively new in web3 gaming, Mobox has a chance to seize the day, so to speak.

There is always more happening in web3 gaming. So stay with us for the latest news and updates!

This seems to be the week of roadmaps. Mojo Melee is the latest to join the trend with a rather detailed roadmap outlining their plans for the next three months, which include the official launch of season one!

Mojo Melee is currently in open beta, and just recently completed their special Chest mint as a reward to their players / testers. Now they’re ready to begin the launch of their seasonal content and have given us a roadmap for their plans over the next three months!

What’s in the Roadmap?

Unlike some other roadmaps, the one released by Mojo Melee includes a timeline! It all starts in June, when Mojo Melee plans to release Season 0 of their game. This season will last for 30 days and includes some new features such as the Premium Battle Pass (available when your NFT collection score is high enough), and a mobile version of the game. This will be a test of the full version of the game.

And after that, in July, we will have the official launch of season one! Season one will bring a new Champion to the game and two new Spellstones! We’ll also see skins for the Champions, and the ability to claim 3D, collectible versions of Champions that you own! Season one will include leaderboard rewards at the end as well. The live game still won’t be available on mobile at this point, but the mobile version should be in open beta testing. Players should also be able to claim their digital collectible Champions, and see them in battle.

Season one lasts for one month, followed immediately by Season Two in August. With the second season comes a new Premium Battlepass, and another new Champion and two Spellstones as well. Players will also be able to see their 3D Mojos in-game, including any customizations added. There will also be new arenas, a spectator mode, and, of course, end of season prizes!

The game is free to play and runs in a browser. You can read the official blog post for more details about what to expect this Summer from Mojo Melee!

How to Play Mojo Melee

Mojo Melee, is a fantasy themed, auto-battler, running on the Polygon blockchain. Players build teams consisting of 1 Mojo unit, 4 Champion units, and 2 SpellStones and fight for dominance in the arena!

Each team can bring up to two SpellStones to a match. Every Spellstone has a special ability. Spellstones fall into three groups — Attachments, which are put with a unit to provide it with the Spellstone’s ability, Offensive Spellstones which are placed on the opponents side and affect enemy units in their range, and Team Spellstones, which provide team bonuses.

Mojos have access to different Spellstones based on their subclass. Mojos are automatically deployed at the start of the battle and can be upgraded during a match like the other units. Players receive ten gold at the start of every round. Any gold not spent carries over to the next round. During the preparation phase, players use their gold to place units and Spellstones onto the battlefield. Players can upgrade units and Spellstones by purchasing additional copies and placing them on the same tile. Players can upgrade each unit and spellstone as many as three times.

Once both players are done preparing, the game enters auto-battle mode and the teams fight it out until only one is left or time runs out. Each unit type has a number of different stats including health, armor, attack damage, and even targeting priority. These all factor into the team’s behavior and results during a match.

Units have special abilities that can trigger when they gain enough Energy. Some Champions even start the match with full Energy! Spellstones activate once at the start of a round and immediately provide their buff or effect.

Mojo Melee kicks into gear with their free to play, open beta, which includes an opportunity to earn a whitelist spot for their upcoming, free, Chest mint! Just by playing!

The time has come to battle in the Mojo Melee beta for a chance to mint a free Beta Chest! Joining this beta test is completely free. No NFTs or tokens required. And to make things even easier, the game plays in a browser. You can access the beta at https://play.planetmojo.io/

More About Mojo Melee Beta

Everyone starts with the same selection of game-bound Champions and Spellstones. Players also get to choose one Mojo character when they first login. After that, players can earn additional Champions, Spellstones, and Mojos by leveling up, through the Battle Pass, and by purchasing them at the in-game store.

some of the Battle Pass rewards
some of the Battle Pass rewards

Champions and Heroes can level up. This doesn’t change their stats, but it does increase their Collection value (if they are NFTs), and if you level up a non-NFT card high enough, there will be an option to mint it into an NFT. Players can find experience points in chests, or purchase them from the store.

Also in the chests are Ore and Gemstones, game currencies that are used for upgrading units and making purchases in the store. Mojo Melee includes an in-game store with items for sale for real money, and some for in-game tokens. In fact, if you pay close attention, there are even some items in the store that are free (check back daily)! They are currently offering a starter pack for $25 that includes General Dox (a Champion NFT), Lightning Retribution (a Spellstone NFT), a random Mojo NFT, and 1500 Gemstones.

Players who own NFTs can use these in the beta. NFTs not only allow you to use them without first unlocking them in-game, but they also increase your Collection Score. Higher tier Collections have more play and earn opportunities, as well as the potential for future airdrops.

But you’re probably wondering about that upcoming mint. Participants in the open beta can earn a whitelist spot by playing the game, or being one of the first 1000 to make a store purchase. Getting a tier 2 whitelist spot only requires 10 Battle Pass points, which can be acquired by winning two matches. The tier 1 spot takes a bit more work, but is readily achievable for anyone who plays regularly.

The playtests for web3 games are coming fast and furious! Too fast to play them all (though I try!). You can find something from pretty much any gaming genre. Here are a few games to watch in May.

There is always plenty of action in web3 gaming these days. And while we cover as many of the games as we can, here are a few in particular that may be worth watching in the coming month.

Mojo Melee

Mojo Melee enters open beta soon. During this beta, players will have an opportunity to play and earn their way onto the whitelist for an upcoming, free, NFT mint! This playtest will be completely free and provide a chance for participants to ‘play to mint’!

We don’t have an exact date for the beta to begin, but I expect it to be this month, hopefully within the next week or two!

Fight!

MOBA Games

DOTA2, a MOBA style game, is the biggest eSport in the world. And really, this type of game seems a perfect fit for web3 gaming!

Spider Tanks has a first mover advantage when it comes to the world of web3, MOBA, eSport games. But they have yet to really take advantage of it. Perhaps their latest update will help propel them forward. But in the meantime, there are plenty of up and coming MOBA games.

Tearing Spaces is currently in closed beta, Wildcard and The Machines Arena are having ongoing playtests. The Harvest is making some game updates and should have a new playtest announcement for us soon. Just to name a few!

Influence

With Influence set to launch this summer, their final test and earn event should kick off sometime soon. These events let players accumulate SWAY tokens, the game currency, simply by logging on to the test network and completing a few actions in-game.

And though Farsite and Star Atlas are also building space-based MMOs, it looks like Influence will be the first to launch. With their detailed production system, interconnected economy, and the ability for player control of sections of the game universe, Influence looks set to become the web3 version of Eve Online. Add onto that a realistic simulation of orbital mechanics, and you have a very interesting game in the making!

Influence food production chain
a production chain in Influence

Champions Ascension

Champions Ascension continues to march forward with their development. Soon there will be a group PvE game, and another sort of PvE game that features players trying to make it through levels designed by other players!

But in the meantime, we have a new style of arena combat known as the Vault of Carnage. This game mode sees 15 players face off in a free for all arena with traps, boosts, and environmental obstacles! In fact, if you want to give it a try, they are holding a special playtest, partnered with Fractal Gaming. This playtest opens on May 2nd, 5pm CST, is open to everyone (you don’t even need a wallet!), and will feature the Vault of Carnage. This event will only be open for an hour though. So don’t be late!

You can download Champions Ascension here.

Vault of Carnage!

NFT Worlds

Though they aren’t quite ready for a full resurrection, a lot has been happening in NFT Worlds. In fact, this week they are re-issuing their world NFTs. Current World owners won’t need to do anything. Their new World will be airdropped into their wallet. For anyone considering purchasing a World NFT, I would suggest waiting until after the migration completes later this week.

This is part of their rebranding project which should fully kick in on May 5th. We don’t yet know the new, official name of this project, but it will be something that is not so web3-focused. They have also announced that they will be creating their own sidechain to help serve the players and world owners.

This steady stream of updates has caused the floor value of the NFT Worlds NFTs to double over the past few months!

Though we don’t yet have an official date for the launch, Mojo Melee has revealed a number of details about what to expect in their upcoming open beta. This even includes opportunities to win guaranteed whitelist spots for their Beta Chest Sale!

Mojo Melee is available to play right now, just using a browser window. However, soon, all player stats will reset, and Mojo Melee will move into open beta! This beta phase introduces a new, meaningful progression system, one where players can even earn whitelist spots for the upcoming Chest sale!

Mojo Melee screenshot
Mojo Melee screenshot

More about Open Beta

When open beta starts, players will no longer have access to all of the Mojos, Champions, and Spellstones. Instead they will start with just the basics, and have to earn access to the rest through the Battle Pass system. Players earn Gems by progressing on their Battle Pass. The Gems can be spent at the in-game store to purchase new game items.

Battle Pass rewards also include Experience and Ore. Experience gained is random and given directly to Mojos and Champions in your collection. When a unit has enough experience, players can spend Ore to upgrade them to the next level, increasing their collection value and rewarding points towards the Battle Pass. Each level has an increased cost in experience and Ore. However, if a player manages to level a character up to level 20, they can mint an NFT version of that card!

Leveling up cards also feeds into the Collection Score system. Players with higher Collection Tiers have access to extra Premium points that they can spend on Premium Quests. Premium Quests are in addition to the three Daily Quests, and they offer larger rewards as well!

Beta Battle Pass
Beta Battle Pass

Players’ ability to earn Battle Points is limited to a pool of 400 points. The points refill by 50 points every 3 hours, so there is still plenty of opportunity to play and earn.

Open Beta will also see the launch of the Mojo Melee store with a couple of package options to help give players a jumpstart on their collections.

Beta Chest Mint

Another feature of the open beta launch includes a special Beta Chest Mint. Time and pricing of this mint are still to be announced. But we do know that they will be limited to 3000 in total, and that players can earn a whitelist spot just by playing the beta!

Earning a spot on the Tier 2 whitelist should be pretty easy for anyone. All you need is 10 BattlePass points, which you can get with two wins, or ten losses. However, Tier 2 isn’t guaranteed. Tier 1 slots are guaranteed a mint, and they can be earned by being one of the first 1,000 players to make a purchase at the in-game store, one of the first 500 to collect 950 Battle points, or submitting a useful bug report!

There will also be various giveaways and such. But the best way to earn a whitelist spot is simply to play the game.

Fresh off of their Mojo Bowl Invitational Tournament, Mojo Melee prepares for their first Champion NFT drop. Opening on March 3rd, the mint for these Champion NFTs is completely free, but you have to be on the list to get one!

The mint may be free, but alas, no everyone can get one of these Champions. To acquire a Mojo Melee Champion NFT during this mint, you must either be on the whitelist, or be flagged as a Mojo Elite.

Mojo Elite is a special Discord status given to active community members and contributors or through giveaways. So this isn’t something that can be purchased or acquired easily. However, there are still opportunities to land a whitelist spot. Follow Planet Mojo on Twitter and join their Discord chat to watch for various contests and giveaways.

Mojo Elites receive a guaranteed mint, but for those on the Mojo List (whitelist), it will be first come first served, so you will need to be quick!

And though Mojo Melee is free to play, when the game launches, those who own the NFTs they play with will have access to greater earning potential.

The mint starts on March 3rd, 2023 with the first phase opening for the Mojo Elite at 4pm UTC, and the Mojo List 30 minutes later at 4:30pm UTC. This Champions mint will be available through Magic Eden, on the Polygon network.

Mojo Melee brings us an announcement about their first Mojo Bowl Invitational Tournament. With a special NFT for every participant, and a 5,000 USDC prize pool, the competition for this tournament should be fierce!

Mojo Melee began weekend alpha tests a couple of months ago. They also recently hosted a small, charity tournament in December. But now they’re ready to open the floodgates to a public tournament with NFTs and USDC as prizes! Running during the weekend of February 11th and 12th, this tournament is held in conjunction with Community Gaming and will include 256 players.

How to earn an invitation?

There are a few ways to earn a spot in the first Mojo Melee Bowl. The first involves playing during the open qualifier weekend on February 4th-5th. The top spots on the leaderboard during that event earn invitations, though we don’t know how many slots are available yet from the qualifier

Secondly, players can win a spot through various giveaways. The first giveaway is already open on Premint.xyz. Just follow Mojo Planet on Twitter, join their Discord server, and register. This contests offers 50 reward spots.

The prize pool for the tournament consists of $5,000 USDC. In addition, every participant will receive a free, limited edition “Golden Mojo” NFT. Planet Mojo also mentions other rewards such as in-game PFPs and badges, as well as spots for future mints.

The Mojo Melee playtest is still open for today, and there will likely be other opportunities for practice over the coming weeks as well.

This weekend, Planet Mojo opens up their Mojo Melee auto-battler game for another alpha playtest. And unlike the last playtest, this one is open to everyone, and will remain open for the whole weekend!

Planet Mojo brings us another alpha playtest for their auto-battler came known as Mojo Melee. This alpha playtest runs for only one weekend — from December 2nd, 10pm UTC through December 4th (10pm UTC). But, best of all, this alpha is open to everyone! You don’t need to own an NFT or any tokens. Just access the game and play!

Mojo Melee runs in a web browser. It’s unclear if there will be any login required. And we also don’t yet have an official link for this playtest. Presumably they will post that information in Twitter and/or Discord later today.

Players won’t use their own NFTs for this playtest. Instead the game will give everyone access to all the Mojos and Champions, allowing players to test many different unit and spell combinations. The team is very interested in player feedback of all kinds. Whether it be bugs, balance issues, or just noting areas of the game that are fun (or not). Use the feedback forum on their Discord server for commentary.

There will also apparently be some sort of rewards available for playtesters as well. Though we haven’t been provided any details on that.

Mojo Melee Gameplay

Mojo Melee is a fantasy-based, auto-battler game built as part of the Planet Mojo ecosystem. Players build their teams around a Mojo character. Each Mojo Melee team is made up of 1 Mojo unit, 4 Champion units, and 2 SpellStones.

Spellstones come with special abilities and fall into three groups — Attachments, which are put with a unit to provide it with the Spellstone’s ability, Offensive Spellstones which are placed on the opponents side and affect enemy units in their range, and Team Spellstones, which offer team bonuses.

Units have special abilities that can trigger when they gain enough Energy. Some Champions start the match with full Energy, while Spellstones activate once at the start of a round.

Planet Mojo just released a pre-alpha version of their first game: Mojo Melee. The pre-alpha is open for various playtests to Mojo NFT holders. We sent our friend Bruno on the battlefield to test this first release and give us his first impressions. Have a look!

For this playtest, players have access to 4 Mojo subclasses and all of the current Champions and Spellstones when building their teams. Both Duel and Melee Battle modes are available. A Duel is a 1v1, best of 3 matches, while Melee mode is a mini-tournament with 16 players.

Other sections and features of the game such as Collections, Quests, ranked play, reward collection, tournaments and such are not part of this test. Mojo Melee is just the first part of the gaming metaverse that Planet Mojo hopes to build.

The first game from Planet Mojo, Mojo Melee, opens up a pre-alpha playtest this week to NFT holders. This is just the first playtest for this auto-battler game, so expect there to be bugs and other issues. Also, this is not a play-and-earn event. Instead, it is a chance to get an early preview of the game and provide feedback to the team.

This Mojo Melee pre-alpha is open not only to Mojo-holders, but also to those who minted the recent Cinematic Collector’s Pass or the VIP Playtest Pass. However, the playtime windows are limited, and you need to have already signed up for a slot. But not to worry! There will be plenty more playtest opportunities in the future. The Mojo Melee roadmap has a public beta slated for Q4 2022, including play and earn tournaments!

The dates and times for this round of playtests are as follows:

  • Wednesday, Sept 21 @ 3 PM UTC
  • Wednesday, Sept 21@ 7 PM UTC
  • Friday, Sept 23 @ 1 PM UTC
  • Friday, Sept 23 @ 3 PM UTC

Hopefully, we’ll get to see some gameplay streaming or videos.

For this playtest, players have access to 4 Mojo subclasses, and all of the current Champions and Spellstones when building their teams. Both Duel and Melee Battle modes are available. A Duel is a 1v1, best of 3 match, while Melee mode is a mini-tournament with 16 players.

Other sections and features of the game such as Collections, Quests, ranked play, reward collection, tournaments and such are not part of this test. Mojo Melee is just the first part of the gaming metaverse that Planet Mojo hopes to build.

Mojo Melee Gameplay

Players build teams around their Mojo character. A Mojo Melee team is made up of 1 Mojo unit, 4 Champion units, and 2 SpellStones.

Each team can bring up to two SpellStones to a match. Each Spellstone has a special ability. Spellstones fall into three groups — Attachments, which are put with a unit to provide it with the Spellstone’s ability, Offensive Spellstones which are placed on the opponents side and affect enemy units in their range, and Team Spellstones, which offer team bonuses.

Mojos have access to different Spellstones based on their subclass. Mojos are automatically deployed at the start of the battle and offer passive bonuses to their team.

Each player receives eight gold to start every round. Any gold not spent carries over to the next round. During the preparation phase, players use their gold to place units and Spellstones onto the battlefield. Players can upgrade units and Spellstones by purchasing multiple copies and placing them on the same tile. Players can upgrade each entity as many as three times.

Once both players are done preparing, the game enters auto-battle mode until only one team is left. Each unit type has a number of different stats including health, armor, attack damage, and even targeting priority. These all factor into the team’s behavior and results during a match.

Champion NFTs

In addition to starting the alpha playtest, Planet Mojo also airdropped Champion NFTs to all Mojo-holders. These Champions will be used in the game, and are the first to be minted. This was a free airdrop to reward Mojo holders. There will likely be a sale for Champion NFTs in the near future.
