Mist Metaverse joins the growing selection of web3 organizations to announce the development of their own chain. Dubbed Mist Chain, this blockchain will be EVM compatible, meaning that dapps and smart contracts can be easily re-deployed from Ethereum without any code changes.

Now of course, the main question people are asking is, ‘Why?’ Mist certainly isn’t the first game company to develop their own sidechain. We’ve already seen Immutable X, Ronin, Gala Games, and Mobox, just to name a few, begin building their own chains. But for the most part, those are already established organizations with an ecosystem of games. Mist just has the one game in development. It would make some sense if you expect a lot of third party development — and maybe they are. But building out developer APIs would probably serve much the same functionality.

Anyway, I’m sure they have considered these factors before launching into this project. The Mist team took extra time to assure their players that the Mist MMO game is the main priority. Mist Chain is more of a side project and won’t distract from the development of Mist the game.

The MIST token will function as the underlying token for Mist Chain.

Mist Chain Testnet

The testnet for Mist Chain is already up and running. You can check out the official guide for information on connecting to the Mist Chain testnet and obtaining free test tokens. Users can try deploying smart contracts and porting apps into the system. Keep an eye out for upcoming rewards and airdrops for those who help test the new chain.

What is Mist?

How to Play the Pre-Alpha of Mist?

1. Go to their official website
2. Click on “Download for Windows” or “Download for MAC” depending on your platform
3. Download the file
4. Run the .exe file which will install the launcher
5. Open the launcher
6. Click on “Download game”
7. Click on “Continue playing”

This will take you to the character creation menu where you will be able to create your first character, chose its race, and if you own any class NFTs, play as a specific class. Those who do not own any class NFTs will have to stick with the Adventurer class which is a good all-around hero, but is not specialized in anything.

What is Mist?

Mist is a Web3 MMORPG on the BNB Smart Chain that will bring all World of Warcraft fans a feeling of being at home. There are quests, different monsters to slay, bosses, and dungeons for players to explore. Basically, everything that there is in a traditional MMORPG.

The game already includes different classes but, in order to play as a witch hunter or bard, for example, players must own those classes’ specific NFTs. Nevertheless, players find an NFT class as a drop if they are extremely lucky, while playing as the free class, the Adventurer.

The game also used the $MIST token, capped at 1 billion, which will be the currency of the ecosystem. In other MMORPGs there is the in-game currency gold usually, in Mist there is the $MIST token.

Pre-Alpha Gameplay

In the pre-alpha there is still not that much to do. It is possible to create a character, slay some monsters, go through a quest line and equip different gear. But besides this it is still too empty. There are also some bugs. I was already expecting bugs and lack of content since pre-alphas just have the purpose of testing out some game features and giving the community a glimpse of what the final product will look like.

What I really liked was its WoW-like graphics and background music. Personally, I got bored but I think the team now has the foundation to build a great MMORPG.

Even though many developers and companies are still easing into the new year, others are developing and releasing new alphas, previews, and announcements! Here are a few games to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

Gala Games

Not just one game, but this is an entire ecosystem to watch. Gala Games is already making a splash in 2023 with their recent acquisition of a mobile gaming company with the intent of onboarding all of their existing games onto the Gala ecosystem and upcoming Gala blockchain!

Gala Games has been criticized for starting and funding dozens of games but not delivering much. That has already started to change with the release of Superior, alphas for Legacy and Echoes of Empire, and now they just went out and outright bought a company that already has a number of existing games. We don’t have the full details on this purchase, but there should be a bigger announcement about this event soon as well as some talk about how Gala actually plans to begin incorporating this new suite of games into their ecosystem.

On top of this they also have their new Gala Music and Gala Film divisions. Gala Games will be one to watch throughout the entire year!

Mist Pre-Alpha

Mist now opens their pre-alpha to everyone! Even Mac players! They opened a closed alpha test for NFT holders about a month ago, and I guess the testing went smoothly enough that they are now ready to invite the general masses! Playtest opens on January 9th at 18:00 UTC. The download links should be revealed then. Watch their Twitter feed for more info.

This MMO has been releasing details about their game over the last few weeks, so be sure to read up before you play!

Undead Blocks

Undead Blocks has already been hosting a steady stream of play to earn events. But now they kick things up a notch with the addition of co-op multiplayer! No longer must you face the hordes of undead alone. Now you can bring a friend for some co-op, zombie killing fun! The team has already announced their intentions to also add a 4-player mode. Already off to a great start for 2023, Undead Blocks looks to have claimed a long-term spot in the web3 ecosystem!

Champions Ascension

Champions Ascension continues to impress with improvements and additions to their virtual world, arena combat, and selection of in-game, mini-games. Their alpha previews open three days a week, every weekend, for several hours at a time, and are open to everyone (if you don’t own a Champion NFT, access codes are easy to find).

Players can earn tickets from participating in the arena or any of the mini-games. Use those tickets to buy Mystery Boxes with random, NFT items inside.

And with their upcoming Elemental mint (basically lesser Champions, though with some unique traits only available to Elementals), expect to continue to see more news about Champions Ascension in the near future!

Axie Infinity

Though Axie Infinity has still been slipping in the charts in regards to active players, the recent first alpha launch of land gameplay, called Homeland, seems to have galvanized their playerbase. Axie land holders have been waiting a long time for this release, and initial reports are promising. With the additional recent major revamp of their game and economy, the Axie ecosystem seems to be thriving and growing.

The graphic leaks have looked great! And many players have been waiting to get their hands on the next phase of the Mist alpha. Unfortunately for most of them, they’ll have to wait a while longer. Because while Mist has announced that their pre-alpha phase 2 opens on November 30th, only players with a significant investment in the game, either with NFTs or tokens, will have access.

To access the Mist pre-alpha phase 2, players need to either own a Tier 3+ NFT, or 100k+ MIST tokens. If you don’t have one of these in your possession, getting there won’t be a cheap venture. There are only a few Tier 3+ items even available on the Mist marketplace, and the lowest is priced at over $1000! On the other hand, picking up 100,000 MIST tokens will cost closer to $1500!

And to be fair, it is only a pre-alpha stage, so this seems like a reasonable way to both reward their early investors and fans while also keeping the playerbase limited.

If you will play the alpha, the Mist team suggests getting hold of some testnet BNB tokens before the alpha opens. You can do that on the official Binance Chain faucet. And since Mist hasn’t provided any new specifics about accessing the alpha, I would assume that their guide from earlier this year is still relevant. Also not officially announced, but it seems like they will have clients available for both PC and Mac systems.

This alpha brings many new features to the game. Including token rewards (though only test tokens), quests, mounts, updated environments and spells! Sounds like fun!

As game development progressed on Mist, the dev team for this upcoming NFT-based MMO realized that they needed more class diversity. Mainly in the form of support and dedicated tank classes. And so the number of Class options in Mist rises from five to eight — adding Berserkers, Priests and Bards.

Along with this also comes the first class limitations for factions. The new Berserker class can only be played by members of the Clan faction, while the Crusader is only available to the side of Order. And like the existing classes, the three new classes will also exist as NFTs. However, they won’t be considered 1st Edition.

So let’s take a quick look at all eight classes and summarize what we know so far.

Crusader

Heavily armored warriors meant to fill the tank role. In the lore, Crusaders strive for virtue and assist those in need. For offense, the Crusader wields two holy damage attacks, Holy Strike and Judgement. They also have an area attack called Holy Ground that does physical damage. As for tanking skills, the first is Divine Protection, offering reduced physical damage for a short time. The second, Sacrifice, which causes the Crusader to switch spots with a nearby ally, potentially pulling them from a dangerous situation.

Ranger

The hunters of Mist, Rangers prefer dealing damage from afar, pinning their enemies down and launching barrages of attacks. Rangers are also friend to the animals, and can even tame some and turn them into pets. But they’re mostly known for their damage dealing abilities. Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire increase damage and attack speed, respectively. Spread Shots sends out a wave of projectiles in a cone shaped attack. And for control, Rangers can place Bear Traps to stun and damage their enemies, or launch a Heavy Artillery attack which causes a stun and pushback effect.

Enchanter

Devotees of magic, Enchanters study any and all spells that they can. Their abilities often have multiple effects, such as the Icebolt, which damages and slows the target. Or Tornado, a channeled spell which pulls enemies close and damages them in the process. They also have Thunderstorm, damaging and stunning nearby enemies, Firebolt, which causes initial damage and extra damage over time (it burns, it burns!), and Energy Transfer, which damages the target and heals the caster!

Witch Hunter

Hunters of monsters and other unwanted creatures of the night, the Witch Hunters have a variety of tricks to confuse and harass their foes. Though familiar with many dark arts, the Witch Hunters are avowed protectors of the people. With a Potion of Silence and Blinding Dust the Witch Hunters incapacitate their opponents, before hiding with their Cloak ability. Then striking from the shadows for extra damage, they hand out the pain with Diseased Daggers and Cluster Bombs! Valued for their crowd control abilities, Witch Hunters should have little trouble finding a group to adventure with.

Priest

A vital part of the holy triumvirate in MMOs is the healer. And as a primary support class, the Priest is ready to do just that. With two healing spells, a target heal in Holy Light and an area ally heal in Divine Pulse, the Priest sets the stage by keeping their party’s health bars full. They can follow that up with Bubble of Light, which protects the target from spell damage. But healing isn’t all that Priests can do. They can also Curse an enemy, causing damage to them over time, and blind their foes with an ability called Not Worthy.

Shape Shifter

Shape Shifters are the druid types in Mist. Communing with nature and calling upon animal spirits to aid them, Shape Shifters function as damage dealers, while also controlling the fight with immobilization attacks. Their two immobilizing attacks are Wolf Fangs and Nature’s Hold. They also have an frontal area attack with Bear Claw, and two movement abilities, Frog Leap and Gazelle’s Gait. Gazelle’s Gait gives Shape Shifters a temporary movement bonus, while Frog Leap jumps them forward, perhaps to move quickly into combat or put some extra distance between them and a pursuer.

Berserker

Unlike the Crusader, the Berserker favors charging into combat and laying into their foes at close range. Not afraid to take damage or dish it out, the Berserker often begins a fight with their Charge ability, causing them to swiftly run at a nearby enemy. Then they can follow that with To the Death, an area of effect taunt, and Raging Voice, a fearful shout which stuns an enemy. Then, once the foe is distracted and in-range, the Berserker unleashes their fury with Spinning Blades and Mortal Strike, two heavy damage abilities.

Bard

Singers of songs, charmer, and an important support Class, the Bard brings a selection of unique abilities to the table. The first, Melody of Madness, is that annoying tune that you just cannot get out of your head. Anyone effected by this takes spell damage over time. They also boast two abilities that function as both buffs and debuffs. Heroic Song will increase a teammate’s damage abilities, or, if cast on an enemy, reduce their damage output. Similarly, Frequency Shift boosts an ally’s movement or slows that of an foe. Soothing Voice can heal a damaged target, and even bring the dead back to life! And finally, Irresistible Dance, which is probably my favorite. Enemies effected by the Dance can do nothing but dance until the spell is interrupted or they are damaged! This could lead to some very hilarious moments!

Even before April started, the team had already begun releasing screenshots and information about the models and designs for the races. Now we have an info dump on their special abilities. So let’s review and see what we have learned so far about the races of Mist — Humans, Leonin, The Fallen, Dwarves, Rhinokin, Mousekin, Elves, and Orcs!

Note: this list may be changed as development proceeds.

Humans

Humans, ever stalwart selections in MMOs. Originally from the south of Darnia, Humans can be found almost everywhere. Their abilities are:

• Quick Learner – provides experience bonuses
• Will to Survive – reduced damage when seriously wounded
• Think Fast – reduced cooldown on abilities
• Inspiring Speech – party buff
• Word of Mouth – causes nearby healing spells to have an AOE effect

Leonin

Leonin, lion people who live in Prides and view hunting as an integral part of their culture. And looking at their abilities, it seems that you really don’t want to try and run away from a Leonin!

• King of the Jungle – passive bonus against beasts and animals
• Stalker – temporary movement boost
• Ambush – extra damage when attacking from behind
• Vicious Claw – slows an enemy
• On the Prowl – temporary attack speed.

The Fallen

Ethereal beings, able to cross the planes, The Fallen seek truth and knowledge, at any cost. Their abilities consist of:

• Mind Melt – critical strikes cause silence
• Ascend Master – reduced mana cost for spells and abilities
• Energy Rift – falling below 50% health resets cooldowns
• Astral Project – teleport a short distance away in a random direction
• Make a Wish – instantly heal 15% health or mana

Dwarves

Tough as nails and quick to grab a pint, the Dwarves of Mist are good-hearted, but woe to those who anger them! The Dwarven abilities include:

• Team Player – healing bonus when healing players at lower health
• Lightning Strikes Twice – every 10th attack does double damage
• Underdog – if enemy has more health, Dwarf does 10% more damage
• Mjolnir – throw weapon at range dealing melee damage
• Beer Armor – temporary damage reduction that also slows down the Dwarf

Rhinokin

Peaceful at heart, Rhinokin prefer nature and independence.

• Thick skin – increased defense
• Size Matters – can dual wield two handed weapons
• Sweeping Strikes – increased melee range
• Belly Bump – pushback attack
• Horn Attack – charge with a stun

Mousekin

Swashbucklers who love collecting gold, the Mousekin abilities favor quick attacks, and even quicker movements!

• Surprise – critical attacks can stun
• Fast Fingers – quicker attacks with certain weapons
• Sneaky Fellow – passive chance for opponents to miss attacks against Mousekin
• Escape Artist – break out of a stun or slow
• Catch me if you can – jump forward ability

Elf

A long-lived, nature loving people, Elves prefer diplomacy, but also understand the need for vengeance when wronged. Master of magic and the martial arts, Elves have many ways to hurt and confound their opponents.

• Poison – attacks have a chance to slow enemies
• Sweet Spot – greater chance to critically hit
• Dark Focus – increased hitbox against enemies when using ranged weapons
• Vampiric Essence – spells have a chance to drain opponents mana and heal the Elf
• Night’s Child – temporary invisibility

Orc

A warrior culture focused on the concepts of honor and bravery, Orcs seek out their foes in battle. And their abilities reflect this focus on the fight.

• Bloodlust – successful attacks increase damage output
• Toughness – Orcs deal more damage when wounded
• Hard Hitter – critical strikes do more damage
• Death Stare – silence
• Head Smash – stop enemy from auto-attacking for a few seconds

To get all the details on the 3 selection rounds for the closed beta demo of Mist, we suggest you read the official blog post. Every selected player can play the game only during certain time slots, so keep that in mind when applying. However, players can win a slot in multiple rest rounds.

Those who have bought a Mist NFT or hold Mist tokens, will have guaranteed access. The lottery selection process is only for 300 players who have not invested in the project yet.

This Monday on November 15th at 2PM all Tier 4 and 5 NFT holders will get access. In addition everybody with 100.000 MIST tokens in their wallet. Next week more players can join, as tiers 3, 4 and 5 gain entry. In addition the threshold for MIST tokens will lower to 95.000 MIST. In the third round they will set the MIST token limit to 90.000 tokens.

If you’re interested to win an entry into Mist, you can join their campaign here. However, you could also just buy 100.000 MIST from the market. That would cost you roughly $20.000. Acquiring NFTs from the marketplace would possibly be your cheapest bet. Or keep your fingers crossed for one of those beta test positions. No matter whether you hold enough MIST or have the NFTs, you NEED to fill in the Gleam form.

The developers behind Mist decided they didn’t want a “boring” NFT catalog-style marketplace. Instead, they set out to create a 3D marketplace for players to explore. Designed to mimic real gameplay, players can get a taste of the upcoming MMORPG while exploring the marketplace.

In order to make the marketplace accessible to all, it will run in a browser. No downloads or installs are needed to quickly buy an NFT. Mist runs on Binance Smart Chain, so having Metamask or another web3 wallet installed makes sense.

Players will use the MIST token to make purchases in the new marketplace. Furthermore, MIST can be used to level up NFTs, as well as combining two NFTs of the same level to create a higher level NFT. This immersive new marketplace will launch on Friday, August 6th at 2 PM UTC.
