MetalCore brings us a new playtest this coming weekend, as well as a special play and earn event! The Alpha 2.5 version of this team-based, sci-fi, FPS now offers both PvP and PvE matches, giving players a chance to try out different playstyles and team tactics.

Another weekend playtest from MetalCore! Officially dubbed Alpha 2.5, this playtest kicks off on May 26th, 9pm ET, and runs until Monday, May 29th, 3pm ET.

The latest alpha build for MetalCore features Faction Pledging as well as PvE servers. Faction Pledging allows players to choose which side they wish to fight for. And with the initial introduction of PvE in their last playtest, MetalCore is now ready to make it a more permanent feature, allowing players enter matches where they have to work together to defeat the AI foes.

This alpha includes a special bounty hunter event. Players earn points for every player kill they get. At the end of the playtest, the top five players on the leaderboard earn rewards. To participate, players will need to register with MetalCore before the event starts.

The winner of this bounty contest receives some MetalCore swag, a Shiva statue, plus a Ledger Nano S. Second and third places receive the swag pack and the Nano, while fourth and fifth place players win an official sticker pack.

MetalCore is available via the Epic Games launcher. If you don’t have access, you can request an alpha key by submitting your email address here.

What is MetalCore?

MetalCore is a web3-enabled game that is a cross between Planetside and Battlefield. It’s a first-person/third-person, sci-fi-themed FPS with numerous vehicles, infantry types, and loadouts. The game features instanced, faction combat, with some battles supporting up to 100 players per side! MetalCore includes vehicle and infantry combat, with a wide variety of combat styles and support options to choose from. Coordination with your teammates and faction members will be important.

During the Faction battles, each side tries to take and control various tactical points around the map while attempting to destroy the enemy base. Tactical points provide in-game advantages for the controlling faction. Each player has a limited number of respawns per battle. Once those respawns run out, that player may no longer play in that battle, but other players can take their place.

MetalCore includes both PvE and PvP zones. Players earn FAB tokens while playing the game. This token will be used for crafting and upgrades. Players craft Vehicles in Garages, and can upgrade and customize them with special skins and decals. MetalCore will also support Baronies, or guilds.

MetalCore will include free-to-play options. They are also implementing a Content Creator’s program with rewards for streamers and video creators. The game is currently in closed alpha testing.

Officially in a phase they call Open World Alpha 2, MetalCore has been holding irregular playtests for many months now. This latest one introduces a brand new feature to the game, PvE zones. In these zones players either venture out solo or in groups of up to 10 players. Combat with other players is strictly prohibited in the PvE zones.

Immutable X and Polygon announced a partnership, bringing two of the biggest players in the Ethereum gaming space together in what could be a game-changing integration!

We called out Immutable X in our Games to Watch in March article earlier this month, and they have not disappointed. Their recent partnership announcement with Polygon will only serve to propel the growing Immutable ecosystem further into the spotlight.

What exactly this partnership means gets pretty technical. But in a short summary, it lets the IMX system interact with smart contracts in a more direct manner and create unique roll-ups for other developers. Up until now, Immutable has been onboarding games in a somewhat limited manner. Mostly focusing on NFT markets and token integrations. Integrating with Polygon and their zkEVM scaling solution opens the doors to bringing all Ethereum projects into the Immutable ecosystem. It will also provide additional utility and functionality for new games and developers.

A number of projects utilizing the current Immutable X offerings are already integrated into Polygon as well, so this partnership should help those developers provide a more seamless experience for their players.

If you’re interested in getting more into the tech behind this, do some research on zkRollups and specifically, Polygon’s zkEVM, as this is really the core tech feature for this partnership. This interview video also has some good information as well.

IMX Tokenomics

In addition to this big announcement, Immutable has also been slowly revealing new plans for their IMX token. They have been leaking info on what they call the IMX Upgrade on their site. So far, the basic gist of this upgrade is that the IMX token will be required for a percentage of all the fees on the platform. And it will also function as the gas for the upcoming Immutable zkEVM network, making it the native token for the entire platform.

You can learn a bit more about the IMX Upgrade on their official webpage.

The Growing Immutable Ecosystem

Aside from this new collaboration with Polygon. Immutable has steadily been adding games to their portfolio. Already including such notable games as Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium, and Ember Sword, Immutable has recently added Chainmonsters and MetalCore to their ecosystem. But it’s not just for gaming NFTs. Immutable X also hosts dozens of other NFT projects.

Immutable X is introducing their Passport as a way to seamlessly onboard new players. They also recently announced their own Immutable Unity SDK and their recognition as an official Unity Verified Solution!

With this new zkEVM system they are building, designed to cross-integrate wallets, tokens, and markets, Immutable is poised to dominate the web3 gaming scene.

What is Immutable X?

Immutable X is an Ethereum layer 2 scaling solution for NFTs. Developed as an offshoot from Gods Unchained, when the team realized that high gas fees were a major hindrance to card trading, Immutable X has grown quickly into a significant NFT marketplace.

The platform went live in 2021 and launched its token later that year. There are no gas fees when trading on IMX. However, there are ‘protocol’ fees of 2% on every trade and sometimes market fees from the projects as well. The platform supports over a dozen tokens including ETH, IMX, GODS, and GOG tokens. Most tokens for the games available on the platform can be used for purchases.

Immutable X is rapidly scaling up their portfolio of associated apps, as well as building a suite of developer tools to help integrate with their ecosystem. To learn more about Immutable X, visit their website, follow them on Twitter, and join their Discord.

In the GAM3 Awards of 2022, multiple web3 games and content creators were elected by the community as the best projects in one or more categories. The winners will share funds from a 1,000,000 prize pool. This is possible thanks to contributions, services & grants partners like Immutable X and Blockchain Game Alliance. Polkastarter Gaming organized the whole event.

More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Voting stats from GAM3 Awards 2022
Voting stats from GAM3 Awards 2022

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.

The MetalCore Alpha launched earlier this month with servers in both North America and Asia. Now with new EU servers, MetalCore plans to re-open the game this weekend with specific sessions for each region.

The MetalCore alpha offers a chance for players to try and out and test this massive, multiplayer, FPS. The alpha is available to those with MetalCore NFTs or game access codes. Players have free access to the Infantry and Mechs during this phase of the alpha. Other Vehicles and unit types should become available as the alpha progresses.

As for this weekend, the servers will be open on October 27th, 28th, and 29th in different time slots. The Asia server opens from 6am-9am (all times in PST), the EU server from 12pm-3pm, and the North American server from 6pm-9pm.

MetalCore already released a major patch since their alpha launch. The 1.1 update brought a number of bug fixes as well as the addition of Squads. Squads are basically parties, allowing players in a Squad to share a chat channel, and see each other’s status on their interface. This is a great addition for guilds, and for any small team coordination during the larger battle. Players can join and leave squads at anytime, making them flexible as well.

So far, players have been giving positive reviews to their game experiences. And the graphics look great on the videos! The recommended system specs for playing the MetalCore alpha are:

Minimum Specifications for OWA:
PC running Windows 10 (64-bit versions)
Intel Core i5 Processor, or AMD equivalent
8GB of System Ram
NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB.(or equivalent generation)
Direct X: Version 12
Broadband Internet connection required for playing
30GB of storage

Some bad news for MetalCore fans! Though scheduled for today, the official Open World Alpha for MetalCore has been delayed due to some last minute technical issues. Instead, players will have to wait until Monday, October 17th to try out this sci-fi FPS.

Many people were excited to try out MetalCore’s sci-fi, massive multiplayer, FPS game. The videos and reviews coming from their previews at PAX West and TwitchCon looked pretty good! And today was the scheduled launch of the Open World Alpha. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a little while longer before we can shoot each other with Mechs on a MetalCore battlefield.

MetalCore in action
MetalCore in action

But not too long! The MetalCore team plans to open their first official playtest on Monday, October 17th. And even though the game servers won’t be available yet, players can still download the launcher and install the game in preparation. They will also be able to look around inside their offline garage area.

Additionally, there may be times over the coming days where the servers are unofficially open for testing. But there won’t be any notifications about it. And the servers can be take down at any time. As for the expected launch on Monday, the servers go live at 6pm PST, and should be up for a few hours. Other windows of availability will open over the next few days as well. The team plans to run sporadic playtests throughout the alpha period.

So why the delay? The MetalCore team called out two specific issues that are blocking the release. One was a bug with deploying more than one server at a time. The other, an issue with deploying the game launcher. Both issues have been fixed, but the team wants to take some time to test things out before they open to the public.

Players will need to own MetalCore NFTs to join. Though there is an alpha playtest waitlist you can sign up for. At the moment, the only NFTs are Genesis Infantry. MetalCore plans sales for other unit types, though they have not disclosed any timelines for those releases.

The date of the Open World Alpha (OAW) for MetalCore has been announced. On October 13th, any and all players holding a MetalCore Genesis Infantry NFT will gain access to the alpha, though there is also a waitlist that anyone may join.

Though players have already had a chance to try out the MetalCore demo via their recent appearances at PAX West and TwitchCon, most players have not gotten a hands-on preview yet. That will change soon with the first phase of MetalCore’s Open World Alpha. Scheduled to go live on October 13th, this first phase is open to anyone who owns a MetalCore Genesis Infantry NFT.

For those without NFTs, you can sign up for the waiting list via this form.

Players won’t use their own NFTs for this alpha. Instead, everyone will have a selection of Infantry, Mechs, and vehicles to choose from.

We’ve seen some footage from their recent demos showing 5v5 combat, but the team has been pretty tight-lipped about their detailed plans for the alpha. But, since the ultimate goal is to have 50v50 matches on game release, we can hope to see some larger scale contests in later phases of alpha if not right away.

The MetalCore team has also made it very clear that the alpha will only be accessible during certain periods as they test, tweak, and update their game. There will be two sets of servers to try and account for differing time zones. One in North America and one in Asia. Additional servers will be opened as the game grows closer to release.

Stay tuned to MetalCore’s Twitter feed and Discord channel for announcements about specific game times.

October officially brings us to Q4 of 2022. And during the first three-fourths of the year, we saw some massive shifts in the web3 enabled gaming space. The rise of higher quality games brought us a summer of betas. And though there are still plenty of chances to get in on beta and alpha gameplay, some of these games are reaching a point where they are ready to officially launch! So clear your Calendars, as there will be plenty of games to play in October!

Blankos Season One

Blankos Season 1 banner

Blankos Block Party rocks into Season One with new classes, new perks, a new Party Pass, new Blankos collections, and even a new basic, starting Blanko (making the old, red Blanko a kind of collector’s item!) The Blankos universe features a large social area to hang out in and practice your parkour skills. It also includes a PvP Brawl, pitting players against each other in three random events. Blankos also offers players a chance to create their own games! It’s free to play, so jump into Season One at any time.

Life Beyond After Alpha Party

Life Beyond after party banner

Life Beyond closes down their first alpha phase with a huge after party on October 12th. Incorporating the lore into the gameplay is a big part of Life Beyond. So, to celebrate the accomplishments of the players in clearing an area for the initial settlement on Dolos, the DEEP Agency will be hosting a special, in-game gathering. Though only open to holders of any of the Key NFTs from Life Beyond, Keys can be picked up from the secondary markets for very reasonable prices. You also have until October 11th to participate in the current alpha missions and earn experience and other potential rewards.

Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball PvP

On October 4th, Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball plans to launch their first PvP experience. Mouse Haunt Dodge Ball is a game about mice, playing dodgeball, and then coming back to haunt each other when they are defeated! Basically, a MOBA style game with some unique features. Players collect cannonballs, and try to hit the enemy heroes, depleting their shields and stunning them. Register on their site to receive early access. You will also need to join their Discord server.

Private Beta 2 Launched for Illuvium Arena

Illuvium Private Beta banner

Illuvium Private Beta 2 brings a major update to the auto-battler game. Illuvium Arena is only part of the planned Illuvium universe. The current alpha for Illuvium Arena is a PvE, auto-battler where players field a team of creatures against a selection of foes. After each successful battle, new foes appear and the player has a chance to change and upgrade their team composition. Players compete to see who can survive the most waves of enemies and earn a spot on top of the daily leaderboards.

The latest update brings new game mechanics, new units, and a major rework of all creatures and abilities. Read more about it here.

Voxie Tactics Season 0

Voxie Tactics banner

Voxie Tactics Season 0 launches on October 10th, with weekly leaderboards, a rental system, and opportunities to play and earn. This squad-based, fantasy, tactical combat game could solidify itself as a long-term web3 game. We’ve seen the rental markets for some games implemented with lackluster results, but Voxie Tactics may be in the right gaming space to make it work. Voxie Tactics is free to play so go have a look at it.

MetalCore Open World Alpha

Metalcore Open World Alpha banner

We haven’t seen any massive FPS games in the web3 space yet, and MetalCore looks to be the first! With a strong semblance to the old Planetside game, MetalCore promises a sci-fi, team-based shoot-em-up where players can play as ground troops or pilot a vehicle or mech as they battle across various maps. MetalCore received positive reviews from their recent demo at PAX West. Expect to see the first chances to play in their alpha in early October.

MetalCore just finished up what seemed to be a successful demo at PAX West. There, they previewed a limited version of their game to a variety of gamers. As a result of observations and player feedback, the team decided to push their open-world alpha back by a few weeks while they continue to tune the game client and servers.

MetalCore sent a team with a playable version of their FPS game to the PAX West gaming convention. The demo at PAX West featured a small, 5v5 map, and from all accounts, was a very popular attraction! However, the team felt that the game still needed some improvements. And so, they decided to slightly delay the release of their Open World Alpha.

In early October, players should get their first chance to experience this open-world, shooter game. Access keys for the Open World Alpha will be distributed to all holders of Genesis Infantry NFTs, one key per NFT. Players with extra access keys can share, but it’s not clear if the keys will be NFTs or if they will be exclusively managed via the MetalCore site.

Access keys have not yet been distributed, so if you want to get into this first alpha, you can pick up an Infantry NFT on Open Sea.

The alpha will run in short playtest bursts. Perhaps starting for one weekend at a time, with the team shutting down the servers and working on updates in between sessions. Expect the playtest access periods to grow longer as the game progresses and stabilizes. Any progression gained during the alpha playtests will most likely be reset — potentially many times over!

The MetalCore team felt like their demo map was a bit cramped, and want to increase it significantly for the first phase of their Open World Alpha, or OAW. This phase will include only a small number of features such as player progression and battles. But, the following alphas, phase 2 and phase 3 of OAW, currently scheduled for Q4 2022, and Q1 2023, respectively, plan to add huge chunks of content!

Plans for phase 2 include voice chat, squads, access to all Infantry classes, and first passes at crafting, tech trees, and game economy. Phase 3 brings the Barony system, skill upgrades, Mechs, land management, territory wars, and all access to all of the vehicles.

The first OAW is now scheduled for early October. The MetalCore team also plans to have a presence at TwitchCon on October 7-9 with playtest stations. So perhaps the two events will be woven together in some manner.

OWA part 1 will have both North American and Asian based game servers. These options should expand with later alphas.

What is MetalCore?

MetalCore is a web3-enabled game that is a cross between Planetside and Battlefield. It’s a first-person/third-person, sci-fi-themed FPS with numerous vehicles, infantry types, and loadouts. The game will feature instanced, large-scale, faction combat. With some battles supporting up to 100 players per side. It’s not clear if these will be three-way battles or just two-sided. MetalCore features vehicle and infantry combat, with a wide variety of combat styles and support options to choose from. Coordination with your teammates and faction will be important.

During the Faction battles, each side tries to take and control various tactical points around the map and attempt to destroy the enemy base. Tactical points provide in-game advantages for the controlling faction. Each player has a limited number of respawns per battle. Once they run out, they may no longer play in that scenario, but other players can take their place.

There will also be a persistent, open world, but it seems like this area may be PvE only. Players earn FAB tokens while playing the game. This token will be used for crafting and upgrades. We don’t know if this will be a blockchain token or in-game only. Players craft Vehicles in Garages, and can upgrade and customize them with special skins and decals. MetalCore will also support Baronies, or guilds.

MetalCore completed their first sale for Infantry NFTs back in July of 2022. No details are available for the time or pricing of any future mints.

MetalCore does plan to include free-to-play options in their game on release.

MetalCore, a Planetside-type game in development, launched their first NFT sale. This sale was for Infantry NFTs, and actually, ended up being completely free! And with only 1000 of the 10k NFTs available for public minting, the competition for whitelist spots was fierce! When the dust settled, all 10,000 Infantry NFTs had been minted and revealed.

Just a couple of days after I wrote my first article about the MetalCore Infantry mint, the team decided to move their mint from the Polygon blockchain to the main Ethereum network. And so, in acknowledgement of the increased gas fees, the team also decided to make the mint free, letting each whitelisted wallet mint a single Infantry NFT! The public sale was a free for all, but still limited to one mint per wallet.

With plenty of market action both during the sale and afterwards, the team likely made enough in secondary market fees to make up for lost income from the initial minting. It’s also great publicity for their game, which already seems to have a strong fanbase. The public mint NFTs were available for only a few moments before they sold out.

And though the game will feature vehicle and mech combat, when it comes down to capturing or holding a base, the Infantry will be the ones inside, fighting room to room and watching the corners!

MetalCore Infantry NFTs

Since the mint, the Infantry have revealed themselves, with varying class types, rarities, and faction alignments. Prices on the secondary markets ranged as low as 0.02 ETH. But since the reveal, the floor price seems to have stabilized at around 0.05 ETH. There are 10K Infantry NFTs in all. Of those, 567 are Legendary, 1838 Epic, 3318 Rare, and the remaining 4279 uncommon. They come in eight different roles, Light Infantry, Medic, Heavy Infantry, Pilot, Sniper, Engineer, Scout, and Super Heavy Infantry.

Each unit also has an associated Faction, determining which side they can fight for. Metalcore Infantry still have two unrevealed traits, Loadout and Utility. These traits are expected to be revealed later this year and offer an additional level of uniqueness for each unit. Infantry holders receive the list of usual perks associated with founder or Genesis NFTs — early alpha entry, access to holder only Discord channels, and the potential for future airdrops and whitelist opportunities. This last bit may be the most important in the short term, as we expect to see additional sales for vehicles, aircraft, and mechs in the coming months.

Legendary MetalCore Infantry

With a roadmap that includes a rental system, crafting, faction wars, and land ownership, MetalCore has set lofty goals for themselves. If they can get massive, 100 player battles that run smoothly and are fun to play, then they already have a winning combination. All the rest will be icing on the cake!

The initial alpha for MetalCore is expected to arrive in September of 2022. At first, players will have open access to all units, mechs, and vehicles. In a later update players will actually use their NFTs in game.
