It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly through the first quarter of the year! Things are changing rapidly in the web3 gaming space, and we’re here to take a look at a few play to earn games to watch in March of 2023!

New releases, new wallets, new mobile apps, new tokens, and even entirely new games! The play to earn space and community continues to grow and expand. And today we have a selection of games you might want to watch over the coming months!

FPS Games

FPS games are a great fit for the web3 space and the competition is rapidly heating up! Undead Blocks just released their daily play and earn feature, ev.io adds the first step towards a crafting system, and we have betas, alphas, and updates from all sort of other games such as Mini-Royale FORA, Metalands, Project Red, Forge: Arena, just to name a few!

And best of all, most of these games are free to play or have free to play options!

Illuvium

The Illuvium dev team now has four games running and accessible, with concurrent development on all of them! Illuvium Beyond is set to open in just a couple of days from now. Meanwhile, Illuvium Zero, Illuvuim Overworld, and Iluvium Arena are all in various alpha and beta tests. It feels like Illuvium is very close to connecting everything together and then suddenly springboarding an entire game ecosystem onto the public! That probably won’t happen in March, but Illuvium is still one to keep an eye on!

Immutable X

Already a big player in web3 gaming, Immutable continues to grow, recently adding ChainMonsters to their portfolio. In addition, they recently announced plans for their Immutable Passport, a seamless wallet and login experience for use by all the developers in the Immutable ecosystem. Finding ways to onboard more traditional gamers into the web3 space is an ongoing effort among many blockchain games and apps. And those who can do the best job at it will certainly have an advantage moving forward. Immutable is in a prime position to be one of those in the lead position!

Gods Unchained

The buzz around Gods Unchained has began to grow again as they move into pre-alpha testing for their mobile app. Mobile gaming is another big facet for gamers, and a great opportunity to increase the playerbase. With an already established system of daily play and earn options, as well as official tournaments every weekend, and a large market of available NFTs, Gods Unchained has a solid foundation to grow from. A playable mobile version could be a huge boost for the game!

Vulcan Forged

Vulcan Forged made a huge move recently. They migrated LAVA, the native token for their ecosystem, onto their Elysium blockchain, and capped the number of tokens in existence. They are already building a diverse ecosystem on Elysium with their own DEX, a marketplace, and a growing selection of games, including Vulcan Verse, a 3D MMO.

Making moves to focus on their token and make their ongoing ecosystem and game economy sustainable is a good decision by the team. Though switching a token can be a painful transition, taking the time to go back and fix an important foundation of the ecosystem is a sign of maturity from the Vulcan Forged crew, and I look forward to seeing what they bring us next!

This year we will see major steps forward in the web3 gaming ecosystem. And a large part of that is simply, more releases, with higher quality graphics, gameplay, and development. February brings us a few notable games and companies to watch, but really the entire space is set to explode in popularity!

We called 2023 as a year of releases foe web3 games, and so far, we are not disappointed! Here are just a few games to keep watch on in February!

Gala Games

Gala Games was on this list last month, and it looks like they aren’t slowing down any! Already full bore into bringing their new mobile acquisitions on board, Gala Games is also moving forward with replacing TOWN with GALA, and bringing their own blockchain, GYRI, more to the front as additional games are added to that ecosystem.

And both their film and music divisions seem to be increasing the pace of releases as well. Also, Gala Games promised to release an updated roadmap for every app that is part of their ecosystem. So look for those over the coming weeks.

Illuvium

Illuvium now has all three of their games, Arena, Zero, and Overworld, running in alpha tests. They’ve been releasing regular updates and bug fixes to Illuvium Zero, and we may even see a public beta for Arena. For a long time after their initial NFT sale, Illuvium had little to show. But now we’re seeing the result of that funding and Illuvium seems to be aiming to release everything all at once!

The Harvest

The Harvest entered into open beta this week. With the web3 MOBA scene still somewhat underdeveloped, there is room for more games to grow in this niche. And The Harvest has some interesting game mechanics in that the battles are between three teams rather than two, and with players building a deck of power-ups to use throughout the match. Will they be able to attract and hold enough interest to carve out their own spot?

The beta for The Harvest is available on Steam for easy download and patching.

The Harvest open beta banner

Mega World

Mega World opens on the Binance Chain and brings cross-chain dependencies between the three cities. However, unless you’re a major player in the land game, there still isn’t much reason to play this game. So I think this new city opening will be a telling moment for the future of Mega World. Will they be able to generate and sustain enough new activity to keep an entirely new city going, while not letting the older cities decay further into empty wastelands?

I know that they are hoping for their citizen-based, virtual world gameplay to bring in new players. But that still seems to be far away.

New FPSes

The FPS genre seems to be one of the fastest growing in web3 gaming these days. I guess it’s relatively easy to throw something together in Unreal Engine and then tweak it to give it your own style and flavor.

We have recent releases from FORA and Project Red, as well as other upcoming titles such as MetaLands and Citizen Conflict. On top of that we have already existing FPS games such as Forge Arena, and ev.io, who just won the best FPS award at the Gam3r’s Award event!

And of course there are others I haven’t mentioned. The FPS category for web3 gaming is growing by leaps and bounds and definitely an area to watch for interested gamers!

There is still some time left to register for the 2.0 version of the Metalands alpha! This FPS game will introduce a new PvP mode that adds a twist to the idea of battle royale.

The registration for Metalands alpha 2.0 remains open through Friday, January 27th. Interested players can register at the official Google docs form. The Metalands team says that selected players will receive rewards. Likely for those who find important or tricky bugs and those who provide quality feedback. Or maybe it will just require some active participation in the alpha playtest!

The previous alpha preview only had PvE combat, but Alpha 2.0 will bring the first taste of PvP to the public. Which should be quite interesting, as Metalands plans to introduce a ‘Hybrid Battle Royale’ game mode!

Hybrid Battle Royale

Metalands plans to introduce a gameplay mode they call Hybrid Battle Royale. In typical battle royale games, it’s open PvP, everyone is on their own, and the playable map slowly shrinks over time.

Metalands wants to keep those aspects while also shaking the dynamic up a bit. Hybrid Battle Royale mode will feature loot crates, PvE, and PvP! Crates drop randomly on the map and are really the ultimate goal of the match. They contain resources such as Cifireum (CIFI), blueprints (for crafting), comic books and other in-game resources.

There will also be some sort of map progression associated with this, but I didn’t find an explanation of how that works. Player looting will be an option as well.

What is Metalands?

Metalands is a first person shooter with PvE, PvP, and a mixed mode with both player and NPC enemies! Rebranded from Citizen Finance, Metalands connects to the Polygon blockchain. Players will gain levels as they play. Players gain experience by competing daily and weekly contracts or missions, and also just by playing the game. They can equip various weapons and character skins, though some may be gated by the player’s current level.

Metalands features player housing the form of Bunkers. Players build and upgrade their Bunkers where they can craft new weapons and decorate it to suit their style. Metalands plans to have some sort of progressive, open world feature, allowing players to harvest resources and battle NPC enemies. The game will also feature guilds in the form of Alliances.

The Metalands economy includes three tokens. CIFI, a blockchain token with a max supply of 50 million, and Meta and xMeta, both in-game currency. xMeta tokens can be exchanged for CIFI tokens. There is a large and awkward list of what each token can be used for on their economy post.

Players can earn xMeta and Meta tokens when they win matches. There will also be earning opportunities via crafting, holding events, and selling ad space in bunkers. Metalands will feature a system known as Reward Pass. Players must purchase a Reward Pass with CIFI tokens to earn tokens from winning matches. These Passes come in various levels, with higher levels having a higher cap for maximum monthly earnings.

In addition, Metalands will feature what they call ‘smart NFTs’ — basically mutable NFTs that can level-up and gain traits.

The PvPvE First-Person Shooter Metalands announces some major, upcoming updates for the game. Smart NFT integration, weapon skins, and weapon inspection are just some examples of what is coming. Expect a way more polished, more competitive, and more feature laden Metalands in 2023.

Metalands released a few playable versions over the last year. So far, it looks like it has potential as a First-Person Shooter. But recently, the team announced all the upcoming updates which are going to be a game changer. Here is the list of everything that is coming to Metalands:

  • Smart NFT Integration
  • Weapon Skins
  • Weapon inspection
  • Gameplay changes
  • Bunker System
  • Tournaments

Let’s break it down…

Smart NFT Integration

Smart NFTs will give players the opportunity to save their in-game NFT progression on-chain. This means that Metalands NFTs will become mutable. So, when players level up their NFT character or make their NFT weapon stronger, that will be recorded in the blockchain and the metadata of the NFTs will be updated. This new feature will also make NFTs more valuable. Obviously, a fully leveled character will be worth more than a level 1 character.

This is possible thanks to the partnership Metalands has with Altura NFT.

Weapon Skins

What is a First-Person shooter without those shiny skins on a player’s AK? Metalands does not want to be different than all the other projects that fall in the same genre, so they are also implementing Weapon Skins in their game. Some of these will be sold, other skins will be game rewards. Players will also have the option to create or modify their own skins by spending $CIFI.

Weapon Inspection

What is the point of having the latest legendary-rarity diamond skin on your M4 if you can not see it or show it to your friends? That is right, there is no point. That is why Metalands is implementing weapon inspection. Through this, players can get a clear picture of their weapon skin and all the changes made to it.

Gameplay Improvements

The gameplay will get a lot of updates. To begin with, enemies will have different classes and a communication system. So, players can expect a bigger challenge when facing bots. The team is also working on the rigidbody system, radar system, teleportation mechanism, and day and night transition.

Bunker System

There are a lot of things players will be able to do from their Bunkers. Some examples are bunker-loadout, leaderboard system, customisation with items earned from gameplay, and teleport to other locations through a device.

Tournaments

Last but not least is the competitive side of Metalands. For all the hardcore FPS lovers out there. A leaderboard system will be integrated where top players will be able to earn rewards like NFTs, $CIFI, stablecoins, and other rewards.

After a pre-alpha release in December, Metalands, an upcoming play-to-earn FPS, reveals its 2022 roadmap and gives us an update on the development. It seems like the project is on track for a beta release in Q2 and that the team is making good progress on the game engine.

The development at the moment is mainly focused on performance and graphics improvements. The maps are being updated with more details. The engine is now capable of more realistic lightning effects as we can see on the preview image below.

A new SFX artist and UI designer recently joined the team to give a boost to the game’s visuals. They already started working on a new user interface. They are now moving away from a rather dark and empty UI and already started to design a brighter and more elegant interface.

The design team team is also working on updated 3D models for the weapons and the different assets available to customize your bunker. Five assets packs are already finished and we can probably expect many more to come.

A preview of the updated user interface

The game launcher update will allow the team to push regular updates and repair potentially corrupted files in small and quick to install packages. The team is now working hard to improve the game’s performances to allow for an enjoyable experience even on lower specs machines.

Beta Release in Q2

The Beta release is still on track for a release in the second quarter of 2022. This release will come alongside more updates and new features. Players will enjoy new maps, weapons, skins and bunkers. It will also introduce an in-game crafting system, mini-games and an equipment rental system. This will be the first season of Metalands in which players will earn exclusive items as rewards.

During Q3, the team will test and polish the different game modes before finalizing the combat system. This second season will be the start of the real competitive gameplay with with the introduction of e-sports events and tournaments.

You can review the full 2022 roadmap on the medium article published earlier this week.

What is Metalands?

Metalands is an upcoming, first person shooter running on the Binance Smart Chain. It utilizes the Citizen Finance token (CIFI). Though it resembles the well-known Counterstrike, and the team has admitted to inspiration from that classic FPS game, Metalands promises much more. With a story based system, the ability to run missions with friends, and a crafting system, Metalands brings in many co-op features of other games such as Borderlands.

Players play to earn by completing missions, winning games, and unlocking achievements. Prizes come in the form of rewards such as weapon skins, furniture, and special bunkers! All of these items can be withdrawn to the blockchain and traded on marketplaces.

Personalize your Bunker in Metalands

Each player also has access to their own Bunker, where they can craft items from resources gathered on missions. Bunkers function as a cross between housing and traditional game menus. Players start in their 3D, customizeable bunker. From here they can enter missions, check on their assets, chat with friends, and more! Adding customizeable housing immediately opens up new markets for the creation and purchase of decorative items.

Metalands, an upcoming first person shooter metaverse, announced an open pre-alpha for everyone. While not a complete game release, the Metalands pre-alpha does allow players to familiarize themselves with the feel of the game. Players can also try their hand at shooting on the target range.

The first person shooter genre has gained quite a bit of traction lately in the blockchain gaming space. Joining HodlGod, Thetan Arena, and VOID is a new entrant called Metalands. On December 19th, Metalands opened up a free to play, pre-alpha release for players to check out.

Metalands soldier
Armed and ready!

In the pre-alpha, players wander around their bunker and test their aim on the shooting range. Players can just mess around with shooting targets, or enter a timed mode and try to get their score on the leaderboard. The top 10 players on the leaderboard receive prizes from a pool of 200,000 $META, 20,000 $xMETA, and 200 NFTs. However, only players who hold MetaNFTs can earn during the pre-alpha.

The alpha version, coming in a few weeks, will feature a full multiplayer system with bunker customization, different maps and game modes, NFT integration, and phase one of the Play-To-Earn mechanism.

Home, sweet home!

And what good is a customized house if you can’t show it off? In Metalands, players can invite other players to visit their bunkers. Also, guilds can create ‘Protocol Bunkers’, where their guildmates can gather and mingle.

Metalands plans for three game modes at launch, Team Death Match, Free for All, and Capture the Flag. Metalands will also support user created content with a verified artist system. Items will pass through an internal verification system managed by the Metalands team to ensure it’s fit for the game (ie, no hate speech, adult content, etc).
