May Mayhem

Town Star relaunches their game on a new game engine called Godot. They will also be adding new content and holding weekly competitions throughout the month. Players can earn rewards by playing in May, with larger rewards for those who place at the top of the competitions.

Champions Arena has an ongoing playtest that extends into May. They have also said to expect the first ever Champions Arena NFT sale sometime this month.

GRIT, an FPS with a western theme plans to open up on a 24/7 basis for everyone with a Gala Games account. This is a huge leap forward for a game that until now, has only been open for a couple of hours a week.

Echoes of Empire just closed their five day playtest, but the team has hinted that there will be some ‘extra special excitement’ in May for EoE. Hopefully it will be a new playtest or beta announcement rather than another sale!

Mirandus will bring us another playtest in May with more goblin killing, and a huge bounty for whoever gets the first kill on their new Boss creature.

Superior should open up as free to play for everyone in May. And Legends Reborn which is already in an open playtest, promises to bring special competitions for venue owners in the coming weeks.

Gala Games also mentions two mobile games that should connect to the web3 world soon – Meow Match and Dragon Strike. These both came from their acquisition of the mobile developer Ember Entertainment earlier this year.

We’ve already talked about the upcoming Winter Demo playtest for The Walking Dead: Empires, so we won’t discuss that in any more detail here. And that’s because there are plenty of other playtests coming up soon as well!

Eternal Paradox

The Eternal Paradox playtest started earlier this week, on March 14th. It runs for two weeks total and is open to everyone with a Gala Games account. Unfortunately, this playtest is mobile only, but they do have builds available for both Android and iPhone users.

As a bonus, Eternal Paradox plans to reward the players in four different challenges. To participate, players will need to link their Gala Wallet in-game. Then, sometime after the playtest ends, the top three players in Combat Power, Challenge Mode, Destroy the Shakraam Legions, and Outlaw Hunting will earn Gems, the game currency. First place in each category earns $500 worth of Gems, second place $400, and third place $300.

Legends Reborn

The Legends Reborn playtest kicks off today (March 16th), at 11am PST. (UPDATE: Playtest is delayed. Keep a watch on their Discord announcements channel for new status reports.) We haven’t been given an end date, but their previous tests have run for two weeks, so we can probably expect the same here.

Legends Reborn is a TCG-style game, but with limited creatures. Each creature played to the board adds effect and spell cards to the player’s deck which they can then use on subsequent turns.

Legends Reborn is building two games really, one standard, non-web3 version that releases on Steam, and a web3 game that we expect to see with NFTs and the ability for players to monetize their playtime.

Last Expedition

Last Expedition launches into early access as they distribute Node Licenses to everyone who owns a Node Bundle on Monday, March 20th. Bundle owners will also receive a early access code Steam code that allows them to try out the latest dev build.

Last Expedition is a team based extraction game where each team races to be the first to extract three fragments while fighting hostile monsters as well as other players. Last Expedition relies on Node Operators running and hosting games, so it makes sense to let them get a first look at the game and try out the hosting features. Check out their recent YouTube video to see some of the gameplay.

Grit

Grit is a battle-royale style, western-themed FPS. You’ll need a key to try out their playtest, but all you have to do is sign up on https://grit.game/.

Grit holds regular playtests every Thursday, with varying time slots to try and accommodate players from around the world. Like most Gala Games, the best place to get the latest info is on their Discord server.

The sale starts on December 20th, 3pm PT, and lasts for 24 hours only. So there is only a small window of buying opportunity. The prices for each node is $2000 (reduced from the original $5,000), payable in GALA or ETH, or with a credit card. There will be a total of 2500 of these specific nodes minted, with 2200 available during the sale. An additional 50 of them will be dropped to random, active, Gala Games Founder’s Node operators. It’s unclear what will happen with the remaining 250. Perhaps they will be used for future contests and giveaways.

This is actually a bundled sale. In addition to the Node license, purchasers also receive 24 Early Access Tokens to share, and an exclusive Ancient Primal Cone Snapper NFT. Node Operators can add the Ancient Primal Bone Snapper NFT to their server, spawning these alien, rhinoceros-like creatures as a special challenge for players. Watch out for their charge attack!

Advantages of Operating a Last Expedition Node

Last Expedition doesn’t promise any sort of monetary payout for running a server. Rather, they advertise it as a chance to create and host a custom game for your friends and others to enjoy. However, they do offer what they call a Last Expedition Subscription. This is automatically granted to everyone who purchases a Last Expedition node. In it, they promise that all future node sales will include an NFT drop to every previous node purchaser.

And here we have the first example! Last Expedition plans to airdrop a copy of this new, Ancient Primal Bone Snapper NFT, to all current holders of their nodes.

As an additional bonus, Last Expedition also plans to have node servers operational as part of the early access testing, allowing players to host custom test servers for them and their friends during the alpha!

What is Last Expedition?

Last Expedition is a new AAA FPS blockchain game where players have to retrieve valuable alien artifacts on the hostile planet Aura. Players must use unique skills and strategies to find resources and win rewards in the game. In addition, players can own characters, weapons, and other items. The game features detailed characters with realistic looks and movements. Last Expedition also includes varied, 3D terrain, allowing players to take the high ground or hide behind covering terrain.

Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game features team-based PvP. Four teams of four fight over three fragments which provide access to alien tech known as CORE. The team who brings the most CORE back to their base wins. Players not only have to battle the other teams, but they must also be wary of hostile creatures on the map, some of which can be added via NFTs by the server operator!

The game is developed by studio Certain Affinity, led by Halo 2 veteran Max Hoberman.

Map Blockout Update

As a part of the Map Blockout milestone, the developers have made significant updates to the structures in the game, the design of the encampment, environment. They have also refined game objects and combat encounters using new editor tools. In addition, graphics such as trees and foliage are given a realistic look.

The developers took a big leap forward, further refined the colonist structures, and began to finalize the design language of the encampment. They also completed the design of the Sulfur Pool area, which will be the focus of the environment art team in this Milestone.

They refined the game objects and combat encounters utilizing new editor features. In this Milestone, they have also got some new editor tools online that allow them to create cells that break up the map into smaller chunks which will enable gameplay logic to work on them. The enemy encounters core object fragments in these cells, and the like are all spawned on these objects.

Characters Update

The developers also shared a look of the characters in the game. Under Milestone 3 – Character Update, the common character variant Alice was shown to the public. The next characters are Christian and Roger, an Alice legendary skin. 

Gala Games partnered with Terraform Studios to develop the in-game characters and revealed the first concepts of Levi and Seb characters.

Weapon Updates

The weapons in the game are also updated, including their textures and 3D models. The developers have updated the weapons they inherited from the Unreal Engine 4 version. In addition, they took the time to refine some of the weapons already in the game and tuned them by passing a texture material to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

Alice’s backpack has also received some graphic updates and utilities. They essentially did a cleanup pass and added new textures to take it up to the same level as everything else to make it as if they all belong together.

Core Combat Update

Here the developers have made changes to the player movement, harvesting weapons, equipment, and encounters.

The change in the player’s movement includes the continuation of the slide to combine it with sprint and jump to pull off complex movement. This is vital for PVP combat and allows players to attack and avoid enemies during a firefight creatively.

Speed and boost portions of the slide are still a work in progress as developers try to balance what is fun for PVP while still keeping PVE encounters a challenge.

Minerals are now randomly distributed throughout the map and are shared between the team when harvested. In addition, players can now Harvest them from Nick’s trees and fragments. Finally, NYX enables players to craft explosive weapons like the rocket launcher.

Enemies now drop Gaia, and players can use Gaia to create graph packs to heal themselves or their teammates. The assault rifle shotgun and mining laser received an updated materials pass to give them a better look in the new engine. Additional reload atoms have been updated in both first and third person.

A first pass of muzzle flashes and VFX has also been added, making for a better player experience when firing the weapons in combat. The bubble has also improved, and teammates can now boost its range and clarity.

Operator License Bundle

The Last Expedition Operators license was announced that would allow owners or operators to run their customized game servers. The bundle includes a Commemorative Node NFT associated with the Operator’s license and a new kind of NFT called Ancient Primal Ravager designed for an Operator’s custom server. 

Besides, you also receive exclusive early access codes to share with friends. The license costs $5000 and can be bought by visiting the official website. OP License Sale started on November 21 and ends on November 22, 2022, at 3 PM PT.
