Illuvium Zero moves into Season One of their Alpha test, opening up the first play and earn opportunities for players in Illuvium. Players can find Illuvial Biodata, discover blueprints from that data, and mint those blueprints for future use in Illuvium Overworld!

This new update for Illuvium Zero officially brings us to Alpha 2.0, and Season One of the gameplay. This season is special because it’s the first to allow players to find and mint blueprints!

All previous game data has been wiped, so all players will have to start their base building from scratch.

To get to the point where they can mint blueprints, players will need to build and grow their base. They will need a Singularity Scanner to track down Illuvial biodata, a Data Bank to store their finds, and a Materials Lab to try and manufacture the blueprints. These are all advanced buildings and will require players to spend some time playing the game.

There will be a minting window opened towards the end of Season One, allowing players to mint up to 15 blueprints per land plot. These Blueprints will be used at a later point to craft items for use in Illuvium Overworld.

Illuvium Zero is still only open to land owners. Players can purchase land plots on the IlluviDex, with the current floor being just over $500 USD.

Illuvium Zero Gameplay

Illuvium Zero is a game about base building, resource extraction, and blueprint creation. Players choose between producing Fuel (which will be used to power players in Illuvium Overworld), resources to expand and craft with, or blueprints, used for creating NFT skins for Overworld and Arena.

There are three types of Elements and three types of Fuel resources. Plots have varying numbers of resources sites based on their rarity. Some plots also have Landmarks, which affect production of the associated Elements or Fuel. And while owning a plot focused on one type of resource production may be an advantage in some ways, owning different types of Sites can help with converting resources. Players use Elements and Fuel for item production, building upgrades and research. Research opens opportunities to create blueprint NFTs. Blueprint NFTs will be used to create skins for the other Illuvium games.

Illuvium Zero provides many strategic options and decisions for the players. Everything from placement of buildings (some work better together, others don’t) to resource management to working the markets to researching Illuvials for blueprints is an important decision point.

Illuvium Zero will offer a free to play option at launch. But players without land can never extract any tokens or NFTs from the game. They also say that land can be managed with just a few minutes a day. But I imagine that those who spend more time micro-managing will see much better results.

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly through the first quarter of the year! Things are changing rapidly in the web3 gaming space, and we’re here to take a look at a few play to earn games to watch in March of 2023!

New releases, new wallets, new mobile apps, new tokens, and even entirely new games! The play to earn space and community continues to grow and expand. And today we have a selection of games you might want to watch over the coming months!

FPS Games

FPS games are a great fit for the web3 space and the competition is rapidly heating up! Undead Blocks just released their daily play and earn feature, ev.io adds the first step towards a crafting system, and we have betas, alphas, and updates from all sort of other games such as Mini-Royale FORA, Metalands, Project Red, Forge: Arena, just to name a few!

And best of all, most of these games are free to play or have free to play options!

Illuvium

The Illuvium dev team now has four games running and accessible, with concurrent development on all of them! Illuvium Beyond is set to open in just a couple of days from now. Meanwhile, Illuvium Zero, Illuvuim Overworld, and Iluvium Arena are all in various alpha and beta tests. It feels like Illuvium is very close to connecting everything together and then suddenly springboarding an entire game ecosystem onto the public! That probably won’t happen in March, but Illuvium is still one to keep an eye on!

Immutable X

Already a big player in web3 gaming, Immutable continues to grow, recently adding ChainMonsters to their portfolio. In addition, they recently announced plans for their Immutable Passport, a seamless wallet and login experience for use by all the developers in the Immutable ecosystem. Finding ways to onboard more traditional gamers into the web3 space is an ongoing effort among many blockchain games and apps. And those who can do the best job at it will certainly have an advantage moving forward. Immutable is in a prime position to be one of those in the lead position!

Gods Unchained

The buzz around Gods Unchained has began to grow again as they move into pre-alpha testing for their mobile app. Mobile gaming is another big facet for gamers, and a great opportunity to increase the playerbase. With an already established system of daily play and earn options, as well as official tournaments every weekend, and a large market of available NFTs, Gods Unchained has a solid foundation to grow from. A playable mobile version could be a huge boost for the game!

Vulcan Forged

Vulcan Forged made a huge move recently. They migrated LAVA, the native token for their ecosystem, onto their Elysium blockchain, and capped the number of tokens in existence. They are already building a diverse ecosystem on Elysium with their own DEX, a marketplace, and a growing selection of games, including Vulcan Verse, a 3D MMO.

Making moves to focus on their token and make their ongoing ecosystem and game economy sustainable is a good decision by the team. Though switching a token can be a painful transition, taking the time to go back and fix an important foundation of the ecosystem is a sign of maturity from the Vulcan Forged crew, and I look forward to seeing what they bring us next!

This year we will see major steps forward in the web3 gaming ecosystem. And a large part of that is simply, more releases, with higher quality graphics, gameplay, and development. February brings us a few notable games and companies to watch, but really the entire space is set to explode in popularity!

We called 2023 as a year of releases foe web3 games, and so far, we are not disappointed! Here are just a few games to keep watch on in February!

Gala Games

Gala Games was on this list last month, and it looks like they aren’t slowing down any! Already full bore into bringing their new mobile acquisitions on board, Gala Games is also moving forward with replacing TOWN with GALA, and bringing their own blockchain, GYRI, more to the front as additional games are added to that ecosystem.

And both their film and music divisions seem to be increasing the pace of releases as well. Also, Gala Games promised to release an updated roadmap for every app that is part of their ecosystem. So look for those over the coming weeks.

Illuvium

Illuvium now has all three of their games, Arena, Zero, and Overworld, running in alpha tests. They’ve been releasing regular updates and bug fixes to Illuvium Zero, and we may even see a public beta for Arena. For a long time after their initial NFT sale, Illuvium had little to show. But now we’re seeing the result of that funding and Illuvium seems to be aiming to release everything all at once!

The Harvest

The Harvest entered into open beta this week. With the web3 MOBA scene still somewhat underdeveloped, there is room for more games to grow in this niche. And The Harvest has some interesting game mechanics in that the battles are between three teams rather than two, and with players building a deck of power-ups to use throughout the match. Will they be able to attract and hold enough interest to carve out their own spot?

The beta for The Harvest is available on Steam for easy download and patching.

The Harvest open beta banner

Mega World

Mega World opens on the Binance Chain and brings cross-chain dependencies between the three cities. However, unless you’re a major player in the land game, there still isn’t much reason to play this game. So I think this new city opening will be a telling moment for the future of Mega World. Will they be able to generate and sustain enough new activity to keep an entirely new city going, while not letting the older cities decay further into empty wastelands?

I know that they are hoping for their citizen-based, virtual world gameplay to bring in new players. But that still seems to be far away.

New FPSes

The FPS genre seems to be one of the fastest growing in web3 gaming these days. I guess it’s relatively easy to throw something together in Unreal Engine and then tweak it to give it your own style and flavor.

We have recent releases from FORA and Project Red, as well as other upcoming titles such as MetaLands and Citizen Conflict. On top of that we have already existing FPS games such as Forge Arena, and ev.io, who just won the best FPS award at the Gam3r’s Award event!

And of course there are others I haven’t mentioned. The FPS category for web3 gaming is growing by leaps and bounds and definitely an area to watch for interested gamers!

Illuvium keeps the alpha coming with the announcement of a date for the launch of the first alpha for Illuvium: Zero, their land owning and management game. Starting in January, land owners will be able to playtest and provide feedback on Illuvium Zero in preparation for the second alpha phase where they can mint actual NFTs!

Following up on the recent launch of their first Overworld beta, Illuvium keeps their playerbase hyped with the launch date announcement for the first alpha of Illuvium: Zero, the third part of their initial 3-game series! Illuvium Zero allows players to build and a manage a base while extracting resources.

The first season, season 0, begins on January 6th and should last 6-8 weeks. This first alpha is a bug-fixing and adjustment phase. So expect all resources and blueprints and player advancement to be wiped at the end. However, there is an implication that after that, players will be able to make permanent progress by playing in the alpha!

This alpha is open only to land holders. If you don’t already own a land you can pick one up on Illuvidex, the official Illuvium market. However, the current floor price for land plots is 0.45 ETH, or a little over $500. This is a pretty quick turnaround for an alpha gameplay release, as the Illuvium land sale was just a little over six months ago!

So knowing the game well could give you a head start on your competitors!

Having completed their first land sale with a full sell-out and no real issues to speak of, it’s safe to say that the Illuvium land sale was a success. Over a period of three days, the team sold 20,000 plots across four tiers. For a total income of $28 million dollars worth of ETH and sILV. By using a staggered Dutch auction format for the sale, players were able to purchase land plots at price points they were comfortable with. Now, we just wait for the opportunity to use these lands in game!

Illuvium sold their first land NFTs. And though the starting prices were not cheap (2 ETH for a tier 1 land), the Dutch auction price model seemed to work really well. It allowed the player base to decide the value of the land. Staggering the land release with a new batch every hour, making sure that everyone had a chance to make a purchase. Overall, a very calm, smooth and well-done process.

Over the course of the sale, the prices for Tier 1 lands seemed to find a comfortable low spot around 0.35 ETH. And even with the current downturn in the markets, Illuvium land plots currently have a floor of 0.43 ETH on the Immutable X marketplace. The Illuvium lands minted directly onto IMX, but the sale itself took place on the Ethereum network. Illuvium hopes that in the future, all purchases and transactions will run through the IMX layer 2 solution to avoid gas fees.

Over 4,000 of the ETH generated from the sale are allotted for Revenue Distributions to stakers of the ILV token. The vault will convert the ETH into ILV tokens, and distribute them proportionately to the ILV stakers. We don’t yet know the details of when or how these distributions will occur.

Illuvium Land Utility

Illuvium Zero inforgraphic

The land from this sale is primarily intended for use in the upcoming, idle builder game, Illuvium: Zero. But the team does have plans to extend the land utility to crossover into the main Illuvium game. Landowners earn revenue by producing Fuel, used for all in-game transactions. The value of Fuel will not be stable. Instead, the Fuel cost for all game actions will remain the same. Leaving it up to players to determine the appropriate value.

There are three types of Elements and three types of Fuel resources. Landmarks affect the production of the associated Elements or Fuel. And while owning a plot focused on one type of resource production may be an advantage in some ways, owning different types of Sites can help with converting resources. Elements and Fuel are used for item production, building upgrades and research. Research opens opportunities to create blueprint NFTs.

The team wants to provide many strategic options and decisions for the players. From the placement of buildings (some work better together, others don’t) to resource management to working the markets to researching Illuvials. They seem to already have a decent foundation for developing several avenues of gameplay. And with potential ties into the larger Illuvial gaming universe, land plots could provide ongoing value into the future.
