With summer vacation arriving, many players are looking for new games to play. And it has now gotten to the point that web3 gaming can completely fill those long summer days! Let’s take a look at a few games to watch in June that may also offer play and earn opportunities!

New seasons, game updates, and mobile gaming and the hot items this month. Mojo Melee kicks off their first beta season, Illuvium Zero opens up a new season with the potential to mint NFTs, Star Atlas updates their Showroom, Mobox goes cross-chain, and mobile, web3 gaming is getting hotter by the day!

Mojo Melee

The Mojo Melee open beta started a bit later than I had expected, so we’re bringing it back as a game to watch in June. This beta not only opens up play to earn opportunities, but it will also serve as a showcase to see if Mojo Melee can attract and hold the interest of a large enough playerbase. Though the game is fun, and runs well, the number of options for building your team is currently pretty limited.

They also have a number of issues that affect progression, which you would think they would have taken care of before the season start. But I guess this is officially season zero, not season one, so we can count this as still being in testing mode.

But anyway, the Mojo Melee beta is free and open to everyone! You can get started here.

Illuvium

Illuvium recently started a new season of their own in Illuvium Zero, their base-building, resource harvesting, blueprint manufacturing, land-based game. After a couple of rounds of testing, Illuvium is ready to turn on the NFT feature. This allows base owners to mint Blueprint NFTs from the game. Provided they have the proper buildings of course. These Blueprints will create items that feed into the larger, Illuvium Overworld at some point in the future.

And speaking of Illuvium Overworld, a new beta for this game was also released recently, offering new zones and a larger world to explore.

Star Atlas

Star Atlas is another game that continues to build out their ecosystem. They just released the latest version of their showroom, allowing players to see and fly around in their owned ships. Players can also take and post screenshots, and engage in racing games.

On top of that, Escape Velocity, their scanning and resource gathering mini-game, has been holding special events where loot odds are increased. At the time of this article, they are currently in the midst of an event that offers a 150x increase in the odds of finding platinum level loot. This loot is extremely rare, even with the odds increase, but it includes rewards worth many thousands of dollars! This mini-game is browser based and free to play (with a completely refundable deposit of ATLAS tokens). You can participate here.

Mobile Games

Web3 gaming continues to push into the mobile market. Many games are building from the ground up with mobile gamers in mind, while other, existing games, such as Gods Unchained, work to build mobile versions.

Gala Games took a different route, opting to straight up purchase a mobile games company and start finding ways to bring web3 into their existing games, The first of these integrations has already happened as Gala added NFTs to both Dragon Strike and Meow Match.

Meanwhile, one of the already live web3, mobile games, Benji Bananas, continues to hold a spot in the top 10 web3 games (in regards to active players).

Mobile, web3 gaming is just getting started. This will be an area to keep an eye for the foreseeable future.

Mobox

Mobox continues to expand, going cross-chain with the addition of MoDragons, a dragon breeding and collection game running on the Arbitrum chain. These NFTs are already proving to be extremely popular. And eventually, Mobox plans to have all of their projects on different chains connected via the MomoVerse.

Cross-chain implementation is a talking point for a lot of web3 games. But only a few have actually done anything with it. So with the concept of cross-chain interactions still relatively new in web3 gaming, Mobox has a chance to seize the day, so to speak.

There is always more happening in web3 gaming. So stay with us for the latest news and updates!

Illuvium Zero moves into Season One of their Alpha test, opening up the first play and earn opportunities for players in Illuvium. Players can find Illuvial Biodata, discover blueprints from that data, and mint those blueprints for future use in Illuvium Overworld!

This new update for Illuvium Zero officially brings us to Alpha 2.0, and Season One of the gameplay. This season is special because it’s the first to allow players to find and mint blueprints!

All previous game data has been wiped, so all players will have to start their base building from scratch.

To get to the point where they can mint blueprints, players will need to build and grow their base. They will need a Singularity Scanner to track down Illuvial biodata, a Data Bank to store their finds, and a Materials Lab to try and manufacture the blueprints. These are all advanced buildings and will require players to spend some time playing the game.

There will be a minting window opened towards the end of Season One, allowing players to mint up to 15 blueprints per land plot. These Blueprints will be used at a later point to craft items for use in Illuvium Overworld.

Illuvium Zero is still only open to land owners. Players can purchase land plots on the IlluviDex, with the current floor being just over $500 USD.

Illuvium Zero Gameplay

Illuvium Zero is a game about base building, resource extraction, and blueprint creation. Players choose between producing Fuel (which will be used to power players in Illuvium Overworld), resources to expand and craft with, or blueprints, used for creating NFT skins for Overworld and Arena.

There are three types of Elements and three types of Fuel resources. Plots have varying numbers of resources sites based on their rarity. Some plots also have Landmarks, which affect production of the associated Elements or Fuel. And while owning a plot focused on one type of resource production may be an advantage in some ways, owning different types of Sites can help with converting resources. Players use Elements and Fuel for item production, building upgrades and research. Research opens opportunities to create blueprint NFTs. Blueprint NFTs will be used to create skins for the other Illuvium games.

Illuvium Zero provides many strategic options and decisions for the players. Everything from placement of buildings (some work better together, others don’t) to resource management to working the markets to researching Illuvials for blueprints is an important decision point.

Illuvium Zero will offer a free to play option at launch. But players without land can never extract any tokens or NFTs from the game. They also say that land can be managed with just a few minutes a day. But I imagine that those who spend more time micro-managing will see much better results.

Illuvium launches round 2 of their Overworld private beta, which brings new zones, new Illuvials, and even new ways to move around the world!

This is officially dubbed a private beta, but if you keep an eye on the Illuvium Twitter and Discord accounts, there are plenty of opportunities to win a key. You can also apply for a key here.

This is the second major beta release for Illuvium Overworld, the open world RPG game about gathering resources, crafting items, and capturing Illuvials.

More About the Beta

This beta brings a major expansion to the world, with two new zones and many new Illuvials. The two new zones are Abyssal Basin, an area of marshlands and bioluminescent lighting, and the Brightland Steppes, an open, vibrant area with bubble rides that let players ride to the highest areas of the zone.

The beta release also introduced new movement options to Illuvium, allowing players to glide and fly across the landscape. With the wingsuit players can fly through the air for a short time, while the friction board is kind of a surfboard for hills and slopes.

Players can navigate between the various zones via portals. The outer zones offer various nodes for resource gathering, and opportunities to capture Illuvials. Players need to look for the swirling, floating bubbles, and target them with their gun. Sometimes, a successful hit will pin down an Illuvial, allowing the player to enter into an arena fight to try and win control of the creature. These fights are on-off battles against an NPC team. If payers win the match, and they have the right kind of Shard in their pack, they can capture the essence of the Illuvial in the shard. Gather three Shards and craft them into an Illuvial creature that can be used in future encounters!

This update also brings some major rebalancing to the Illuvials, making their roles and archetypes more distinct. In addition, there have been some changes to synergies, and the overload mechanic. You can read the full patch notes for the Arena here.

The new beta can be downloaded from the Illuvium website. The installation file is just over 17 gigs in size.

What is Illuvium Overworld?

Illuvium Overworld is an open-world RPG adventure game. Players gather resources for crafting and hunt for elusive Illuvials to try and capture them. However, every gathering process or Illuvial encounter costs energy. And players have a limited amount of energy to use before they need to recharge.

Illuvium Overworld will feature over 100 Illuvials to capture, each with different attributes and powers. Capture them, upgrade them and combine two Iluvials to fuse a new one. Players can store their Illuvials on Shards, a bit like a collectible card. These cards hold the essence of an Illuvial. Players can trade shards in the marketplace or give them to a friend.

Though the core Illuvium game is an open-world adventure game that is part crafting, part auto-battler, and part creature collector, the Illuvium web3 space encompasses more. This includes Illuvium Zero, a land-based builder game, Illuvium Arena, a PvE, arena, survival contest, and Illuvium Beyond, a PFP customization game.

Illuvium also has their own marketplace known as the IlluviDex. This will serve as a central point for trading all things Illuvium related. Illuvium also includes a token staking system and player governance in the form of a Council that goes through regular election periods.

To learn more, visit the Illuvium website, follow them on Twitter, and join their Discord chat.

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly through the first quarter of the year! Things are changing rapidly in the web3 gaming space, and we’re here to take a look at a few play to earn games to watch in March of 2023!

New releases, new wallets, new mobile apps, new tokens, and even entirely new games! The play to earn space and community continues to grow and expand. And today we have a selection of games you might want to watch over the coming months!

FPS Games

FPS games are a great fit for the web3 space and the competition is rapidly heating up! Undead Blocks just released their daily play and earn feature, ev.io adds the first step towards a crafting system, and we have betas, alphas, and updates from all sort of other games such as Mini-Royale FORA, Metalands, Project Red, Forge: Arena, just to name a few!

And best of all, most of these games are free to play or have free to play options!

Illuvium

The Illuvium dev team now has four games running and accessible, with concurrent development on all of them! Illuvium Beyond is set to open in just a couple of days from now. Meanwhile, Illuvium Zero, Illuvuim Overworld, and Iluvium Arena are all in various alpha and beta tests. It feels like Illuvium is very close to connecting everything together and then suddenly springboarding an entire game ecosystem onto the public! That probably won’t happen in March, but Illuvium is still one to keep an eye on!

Immutable X

Already a big player in web3 gaming, Immutable continues to grow, recently adding ChainMonsters to their portfolio. In addition, they recently announced plans for their Immutable Passport, a seamless wallet and login experience for use by all the developers in the Immutable ecosystem. Finding ways to onboard more traditional gamers into the web3 space is an ongoing effort among many blockchain games and apps. And those who can do the best job at it will certainly have an advantage moving forward. Immutable is in a prime position to be one of those in the lead position!

Gods Unchained

The buzz around Gods Unchained has began to grow again as they move into pre-alpha testing for their mobile app. Mobile gaming is another big facet for gamers, and a great opportunity to increase the playerbase. With an already established system of daily play and earn options, as well as official tournaments every weekend, and a large market of available NFTs, Gods Unchained has a solid foundation to grow from. A playable mobile version could be a huge boost for the game!

Vulcan Forged

Vulcan Forged made a huge move recently. They migrated LAVA, the native token for their ecosystem, onto their Elysium blockchain, and capped the number of tokens in existence. They are already building a diverse ecosystem on Elysium with their own DEX, a marketplace, and a growing selection of games, including Vulcan Verse, a 3D MMO.

Making moves to focus on their token and make their ongoing ecosystem and game economy sustainable is a good decision by the team. Though switching a token can be a painful transition, taking the time to go back and fix an important foundation of the ecosystem is a sign of maturity from the Vulcan Forged crew, and I look forward to seeing what they bring us next!

Illuvium recently dropped an announcement about Illuvium Beyond, a combination PFP collection and NFT gathering game. Now they unveil more details about their plans for this fourth layer of the ever growing Illuvium universe!

Illuvium continues to expand their offerings, bringing Illuvitars and a new game, Illuvium Beyond, to a website near you! You can read the full official post here, but I’ll try and sum up and cover all the key points here.

Illuvium Beyond centers around Illuvitars. These are collectible, PFP type NFTs, that can be customized! Illuvitars are hand-drawn representations of Illuvials from the Illuvium world. They arrive with random backgrounds and facial expressions, but the real uniqueness will come from each player’s customization choices. Illuvitars have five accessory slots. These are head, body, skin, eyes, and prop. Illuvitars aslo come with special finishes, or shines — color and holo. Holo is the rarest of them all.

The power rating of an Illuvitar is determined by its rarity, and the rarity of the equipment it’s wearing. Bonding, or equipping an Illuvitar with an item is a permanent transformation. Potentially, there will be a future option to replace accessories, but at the start, each slot is a one-time action, so choose your accessories wisely!

How to Acquire Illuvitars and Accessories

Illuvium will soon hold a sale for D1sk packs. These come in Standard and Mega versions. Each one contains a random Illuvitar and three accessories. In addition, the standard disk contains an extra, Tier 0 Illuvitar, while the Mega pack includes an extra, rare Illuvitar. Mega packs also have increased odds of finding higher rarity items.

Some of the D1sk packs will be marked as ‘alpha’ packs, but it seems that otherwise they are the same as the regular packs. Prices are 0.0005 ETH for a Standard pack and 0.025 for a Mega. Alpha packs are 5x the regular price.

Illuvitars will be sold in waves, with 25 different Illuvials available during this first wave. You can see the potential contents in this first pack sale at https://illuvium.io/illuvitars/illuvitar-d1sks

The first wave sale begins on March 7th. Illuvium is planning a launch party, though we don’t yet have a specific time for the party or the sale. Follow Illuvium’s social media channels and stay tuned for further details. (Illuvium Twitter, and Discord)

Collections and Leaderboards

Collections and Leaderboards are the gaming side of this release. Players complete collections by placing their owned Illuvitars into an album. Illuvitars can be used in multiple collections if they meet the requirements. Collections can include focuses on types of Illuvitars, equipped accessories, backgrounds, affinities, classes, and card set. The higher the power of the Illuvials placed into the collections, the more album points they are worth. Completing collections also increases album points.

Illuvium Beyond will feature a leaderboard showcasing the top 100 players with the highest album scores. At a later point, leaderboard winners will receive exclusive borders to use with their Illuvitars.

What is Illuvium?

Illuvium is an open-world RPG adventure game built the Ethereum blockchain, and using the Immutable X layer. Players journey across a vast and varied landscape to hunt and capture creatures, or Illuvials. Together with their little tamed creatures, players are tasked with discovering what caused the cataclysm that shattered the world.

Though the core Illuvium game is an open-world adventure game that is part auto-battler and part creature collector, the Illuvium web3 space encompasses more. For example, the upcoming Illuvium Zero will be a land-based builder game. However, this game will still tie into the main game by producing resources for use in Illuvium Overworld.

Illuvium Overworld, the open-world, RPG, will feature over 100 Illuvials to capture, each with different attributes and powers. Capture them, upgrade them and combine two Iluvials to fuse a new one. Players can store their Illuvials on Shards, a bit like a collectible card. These cards hold the essence of an Illuvial. Players can trade shards in the marketplace or give them to a friend.

Illuvium has its own marketplace known as the IlluviDex.This will serve as a central point for trading all things Illuvium related. Illuvium also includes player governance in the form of a Council that goes through regular election periods.

Illuvium announces yet another addition to their NFT stable. This one called Illuvium Beyond. Featuring Illuvitars and accessory NFTs, Illuvium Beyond is slated to launch on March 7th, 2023.

Illuvium adds another facet to their ecosystem with Illuvitars. Based on Illuvials from the games, Illuvitars function as standard Profile picture, but they will also have in-game utility across all of the Illuvium games.

Beginning with a base set of 155 Illuvials, owners will customize their individual Illuvials with various accessories. Accessories come in different types, such as eyewear and head gear. Accessories also have varying rarities.

When sale opens on March 7th, players will be able to buy D1SKs on the Illuvium marketplace, IlluviDex. D1SK purchases can be made with ETH or with sILV tokens. There will be two pack options available, both including a random Illuvitar and three accessories. Players will be able to use the accessories to customize their Illuvitar to their liking.

What is Illuvium Beyond?

Illuvium Beyond is a series of leaderboards and Collections based around Illuvitars. By equipping rarer accessories, players will be able to increase the rating of their Illuvial and compete for a place on the leaderboards.

Illuvial owners will also be able to fill in slots in various Collections with their Illuvials. The launch will include over 100 collections to complete. Collections fill automatically as players acquire more Illuvials, and Illuvials can fill spots in more than one Collection if they meet the Collections’ criteria.

Completing collections could also lead to rewards such as a special border for Illuvitars or an emote to use in the Arena.

This year we will see major steps forward in the web3 gaming ecosystem. And a large part of that is simply, more releases, with higher quality graphics, gameplay, and development. February brings us a few notable games and companies to watch, but really the entire space is set to explode in popularity!

We called 2023 as a year of releases foe web3 games, and so far, we are not disappointed! Here are just a few games to keep watch on in February!

Gala Games

Gala Games was on this list last month, and it looks like they aren’t slowing down any! Already full bore into bringing their new mobile acquisitions on board, Gala Games is also moving forward with replacing TOWN with GALA, and bringing their own blockchain, GYRI, more to the front as additional games are added to that ecosystem.

And both their film and music divisions seem to be increasing the pace of releases as well. Also, Gala Games promised to release an updated roadmap for every app that is part of their ecosystem. So look for those over the coming weeks.

Gala Games banner

Illuvium

Illuvium now has all three of their games, Arena, Zero, and Overworld, running in alpha tests. They’ve been releasing regular updates and bug fixes to Illuvium Zero, and we may even see a public beta for Arena. For a long time after their initial NFT sale, Illuvium had little to show. But now we’re seeing the result of that funding and Illuvium seems to be aiming to release everything all at once!

The Harvest

The Harvest entered into open beta this week. With the web3 MOBA scene still somewhat underdeveloped, there is room for more games to grow in this niche. And The Harvest has some interesting game mechanics in that the battles are between three teams rather than two, and with players building a deck of power-ups to use throughout the match. Will they be able to attract and hold enough interest to carve out their own spot?

The beta for The Harvest is available on Steam for easy download and patching.

The Harvest open beta banner

Mega World

Mega World opens on the Binance Chain and brings cross-chain dependencies between the three cities. However, unless you’re a major player in the land game, there still isn’t much reason to play this game. So I think this new city opening will be a telling moment for the future of Mega World. Will they be able to generate and sustain enough new activity to keep an entirely new city going, while not letting the older cities decay further into empty wastelands?

I know that they are hoping for their citizen-based, virtual world gameplay to bring in new players. But that still seems to be far away.

Mega World banner

New FPSes

The FPS genre seems to be one of the fastest growing in web3 gaming these days. I guess it’s relatively easy to throw something together in Unreal Engine and then tweak it to give it your own style and flavor.

We have recent releases from FORA and Project Red, as well as other upcoming titles such as MetaLands and Citizen Conflict. On top of that we have already existing FPS games such as Forge Arena, and ev.io, who just won the best FPS award at the Gam3r’s Award event!

And of course there are others I haven’t mentioned. The FPS category for web3 gaming is growing by leaps and bounds and definitely an area to watch for interested gamers!

Players have voted and selected the winners of the Gam3r’s Choice Awards! With eighteen categories and dozens of nominees, this event brought a lot of gaming communities out to vote for their favorite games.

After giving players several weeks to cast their votes across a variety of categories, The Gam3r’s Choice Awards have announced their winners. With an in-person awards show in Miami, physical trophies, and a livestream of the event, Web Gam3r upped the ante in regards to web3 gaming awards!

Big Time was the big winner at these awards, taking no less than three categories, including Game of the Year!

Gam3r’s Awards Winners List

Here is the full list of winners.

Many of these winners are not especially surprising. Animoca Brands seems to have their hand in half of web3 gaming currently in development, and Gala Games has done nothing buy stay in the news recently with their acquisitions, releases, and other updates.

And with The Sandbox migrating to the Polygon chain, as well as well-known NFTs projects DeGods and y00ts, Polygon seems to be here to stay. Even with competition from Immutable X and other layer 2 or sidechain solutions.

But some of these winners are more obviously just game communities bombarding the system with votes, whether deserved or not. With a number of mobile, web3 games that you can actually play, Guild of Guardians, which has only shown us a couple of very limited (both in time and scope) alphas, doesn’t deserve this particular award, in my opinion Now don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to playing some GoG, and own several Founder NFTs myself. And I’m sure that they will earn many awards in the future. But with their current status, I wouldn’t have put them up for this particular award to begin with.

The Future of Gaming

It’s interesting that we still don’t have anything in the way of action-based sports game in web3 yet. All we have are the hybrid fantasy football / collectible card games such as SoRare. This seems like an opportunity for some bold developer. I expect that we’ll see someone coming to fill that void within the next year.

But these awards do show us the direction web3 gaming is heading. For the most part, we see active, high-quality games on the winner’s list. Browser based games are going to need to offer something special to compete with the detail and graphics offered by the more traditional game downloads.!

And the actual awards ceremony seemed to be enjoyed by the participants. I can see these awards becoming a bigger and bigger event as the web3 ecosystem grows and develops.

I’m looking forward to 2023, the year of blockchain gaming!

Illuvium keeps the alpha coming with the announcement of a date for the launch of the first alpha for Illuvium: Zero, their land owning and management game. Starting in January, land owners will be able to playtest and provide feedback on Illuvium Zero in preparation for the second alpha phase where they can mint actual NFTs!

Following up on the recent launch of their first Overworld beta, Illuvium keeps their playerbase hyped with the launch date announcement for the first alpha of Illuvium: Zero, the third part of their initial 3-game series! Illuvium Zero allows players to build and a manage a base while extracting resources.

The first season, season 0, begins on January 6th and should last 6-8 weeks. This first alpha is a bug-fixing and adjustment phase. So expect all resources and blueprints and player advancement to be wiped at the end. However, there is an implication that after that, players will be able to make permanent progress by playing in the alpha!

This alpha is open only to land holders. If you don’t already own a land you can pick one up on Illuvidex, the official Illuvium market. However, the current floor price for land plots is 0.45 ETH, or a little over $500. This is a pretty quick turnaround for an alpha gameplay release, as the Illuvium land sale was just a little over six months ago!

Elements and Fuel are used for item production, building upgrades and research.

Learning the game during this alpha test could provide an advantage. Illuvium plans to let players mint actual NFTs during the second alpha. So knowing the game well could give you a head start on your competitors!

In the GAM3 Awards of 2022, multiple web3 games and content creators were elected by the community as the best projects in one or more categories. The winners will share funds from a 1,000,000 prize pool. This is possible thanks to contributions, services & grants partners like Immutable X and Blockchain Game Alliance. Polkastarter Gaming organized the whole event.

More than 100 web3 projects encouraged their communities to vote for their projects in the GAM3 Awards of 2022 contest. This resulted in over 40,000 community members voting on their favorite projects and content creators resulting in a total of 250,000 votes across the 16 different categories. Thirty-two projects were filtered out of all the votes and below are the winners of each category on December 15th:

As for the content creator award, twenty-three web3 gaming content creators received nominations until the final voting day. But who took the prize home was Brycent, a Twitch streamer.

Besides being an awards event, many web3 games shared some alpha with their community members. An example of this was the project Blocklords. During the stream, they showed some gameplay for the first time ever.

This was a major event in Web3 Gaming. Justin Kan, Founder of Fractal, shared his thoughts and commented: “We are excited to partner with Polkastarter Gaming on this event, it is truly a step in the right direction for the industry, and the first of its kind in web3 gaming!”

Last Thoughts

The GAM3 Awards this year were one of the most expected events in the web3 gaming industry. A lot of enthusiasts took their time to vote on their favorite games. But, even though I agree with some of the awards, I am not sure it reflects accurately the best projects out there.

The projects who won are the ones that got the highest amount of votes. So, did the winners win because their product is the best in a specific category, or did they win because they have the largest community? Are GAM3 Awards about quality or about marketing and hype?

I can give you a few examples. Star Atlas won an award in the ‘Best Graphics’ category while they only have a very limited demo out. On the other hand Phantom Galaxies also has AAA graphics, maybe even better than Star Atlas’! It also has a lot of content, voice acting, quests, multiple areas to explore, gathering, combat, and different classes. Overall, it is light-years ahead of Star Atlas when it comes to development and quality and they did not win anything while both games fall into the Sci-fi, MMORPG genre. Maybe the graphics shown in Star Atlas demo are a bit better, but it is just a demo in a tiny area while Phantom Galaxies also has mind-blowing graphics in a much vaster area, where players can do a lot more than just walk around.

Personally, I think this is not fair and I also think that the awards should be distributed based on established criteria and not votes. Votes just represent which project has more hype and the largest community and is not directly related to the quality of a project.

When it comes to the number of people voting I think it is a positive sign. It indicates that there are more and more people interested in web3 gaming and that the industry is growing by the day.
